The Fox Concubine

A royal fairy princess traveled to the human world with her pet fox, where the Heavenly Emperor befriended them at first before killing the princess for her royal blood. Before dying, the princess sent away part of the spirit belonging to Hua Mei'er, the fox's baby. When the Heavenly Emperor realized having royal blood didn't make him royal, he blocked Mei'er's memory, and had his illegitimate son, Hu Xiaoyu, take care of the fox baby. After 1,000 years, the grown-up Mei'er lost her memory upon waking, and was told she was a fox spirit by the Fox Spirit Miaoli and that she ruled the mountain she inhabited. Mei'er soon suffered an ordeal where Xiaoyu came to her rescue. Xiaoyu said Mei'er was his wife, which Mei'er couldn't accept, and she decided to escape with Miaoli. While the two of them were in the city, Mei'er inadvertently became an assassin and was ordered to kill the Lord of Xiaoyao, who was trying to rebel against the royals, and who actually turned out to be Xiaoyu, the man she has been avoiding. Mei'er became close to Xiaoyu after some time together, but after discovering his wandering eye, she left again, and was captured by Xiaoyu.

The Fox Concubine Chapter 1

“Huahua, wake up! Please wake up! Please! Don't die!”

My body was shaken so hard by someone that it felt as if my organs might fall out. Are they sad for me or trying to shake me to death? I was starting to think most of the unnatural deaths on TV shows were from being shaken so hard.

“S-s-s-s-stop shaking me! Stop it!” I finally blurted out the words before the shaking could kill me.

Whoever was shaking me stopped and stared at me, but I was dizzy from all the vibrations and managed to pass out . . .

“Huahua, Huahua! Don’t die again! Please don’t die!” The shaking resumed; whoever was doing it really had a problem. Didn’t they see me passing out? They didn’t give me a break before shaking me again. I couldn’t handle it anymore. Opening my eyes, I swung my open hand at the person’s face.

“Are you trying to kill me—?” My voice stopped since a stunning man appeared in my vision. His skin was clear and pale, his mouth was open in shock, and he had sensual eyes. There was a red handprint on his face, which made him seem more sympathetic. His long black hair grazed the tops of my feet. And I was actually being held by this gorgeous specimen?

Boy crazy or not, I recovered from my previous shell-shocked expression of seeing a gorgeous man. I changed what I was going to say. “Hey, hottie, you have a girlfriend?” Then I winked, trying to show whatever allure I had.

Fine, I admit I was average looking, the kind of girl no one would notice in a crowd. But good-looking men were liked by most girls, so no one could criticize me for being mesmerized by a handsome face.

“Huahua, what’s wrong with you?” The man looked stunned; he actually looked worried for me.

“I’m not boy crazy!” It was okay for other people to think I was boy crazy, but I didn’t want a hot boy to think so, too. It’d be too mortifying. I wished I could hit a wall or dig a hole, to hide myself away.

“Hua . . .”

“Stop calling me Huahua!”

“But . . .” The gorgeous man paused. I relaxed a bit and shifted my eyes away from his beautiful lips to his waterfall-like hair. His voice sounded as if he needed to finish his words quickly.

“Huahua, don’t make yourself sick about it. That male fox was no good. Why did you like him so much? With your beauty, anyone would be lucky to offer themselves to you. Just . . . let him go—”

“Wait!” I interrupted him while streamlining his words in my mind to the most important information. What did I just hear? I was good looking? I needed a mirror. Frantically, I looked around for anything resembling a mirror.

I ignored whatever else he was saying after I heard “beauty.”

Wait, his eyes could be a mirror. I looped my arms around his shoulders to his neck, looking intently into his eyes. A small, upside down reflection shown inside his purple irises.

Beautiful, so beautiful! Delicate features, long, fire-red hair, creamy skin, eyes like rubies. I had no idea when my eyesight had improved so much that I could see my tiny image in someone’s eyes, but I really looked incredibly attractive. I thought this man was good looking, but I was even more so. Not to brag, but I was stunningly beautiful.

As the reflection in his eyes grew bigger, something soft and warm pressed on my lips. Ahh, my first kiss . . .  I was so excited his tongue slipped in my mouth . . .  I had no idea what to do as I’d never had any intimate moments with men. Luckily enough, I quickly regained my composure and managed to push him away and slap him in one motion.

Slap! The loud noise reverberated in my ears, and now the gorgeous man had a red handprint on his right cheek, too.

“I—"

“No excuses!” I wiped my mouth. Even though I liked pretty faces, I couldn’t just let people take advantage of me. I stared at his guilty face. “You already got something you shouldn’t have. Now, tell me what you’re going to pay me. If you have no money, you can pay with your body.”

The man looked anxious when he that, and he softly touched my forehead. “Huahua, don’t scare me, please. You were seducing me earlier, and that’s why I . . .  Are you feeling all right? I hope you’re okay, if that male fox came back, I, I—"

Me seducing him? Was he serious? Also, why would a top beauty like me have a name like Huahua? I might as well be called Hha.

“Stop—” I cleared my throat. “First, I’m not Huahua. And who are you exactly? Where are we?” If I remembered correctly, I was on my lunch break and was napping, and then I woke up in this random place.

I was boy crazy but not stupid. It looked like I had timetraveled. What incredible luck. I was pretty now, but I didn’t have to accept my fate.

The gorgeous man looked a little shocked as he stared at me, his eyes unfocused. After a while, he cried as if he was my family. “Poor Huahua, you’re . . .  The male fox is gonna eat you when he gets back. Your innocence, which you saved for 800 years, is probably going to be . . .”

He was a dramatic one. Eight hundred years of innocence? I watched him with amusement.

He cried some more, wiped his tears, and finally said, “Maybe you could run?”

Run? Where would I run? I didn’t know anything about this place. I was better off hanging with him; at least I wouldn’t starve.

I patted his shoulders. “You keep saying male fox; what kind of person is he exactly?”

He seemed surprised again. “He’s not human.”

Right, not human. This gorgeous man knew how to insult someone. Whoever scared him so much is probably not a good person, I thought to myself.

“He’s a male fox spirit, about 2,000 years older than you.”

“Pfft . . ." He had really made me speechless. “What?!”
