Chapter 1
Did I Choose the Wrong Difficulty?
"Did I forget to select 'Casual Difficulty' when I transmigrated?" Xiao Bai lay sprawled on a mountain of junk, perfectly camouflaged among the scrap metal and debris. His vision was pitch black; he couldn't see a thing. He could only feel electric sparks crackling along his left arm, coolant leaking from his right leg, and parts occasionally falling out of his midsection. And inside his "abdomen" was wrapped a corpse. His own corpse... Just minutes earlier, Xiao Bai had been laying out cables at a construction site under the blazing sun. Suddenly, his vision went dark. When he woke up, he found himself transmigrated to another world. A flood of memories and knowledge also surged into his mind— Did I transmigrate into another version of myself in a parallel world? Am I still me, with the same name, appearance, and personality, just 'reloaded' to when I was eighteen? My parents are the same, but they now work in the mechanical processing industry? This world is still called Earth, but now it has something called Abyss Paradise? This was a realm that existed beyond the world, akin to a game's "dungeon" or a novel's "Secret Realm." It produced various resources and rewards but also harbored ferocious demonic creatures and unknown dangers. Each "Paradise" featured distinct settings: perhaps a lost battlefield from history, ancient ruins of an alien civilization, serene scenic areas, or even surreal fantasy domains. The Mecha Academy's training ground, for instance, was situated within a safe, stable, and spacious "Paradise." Now, getting back to the present, what exactly was Xiao Bai's situation? Xiao Bai spent some time processing the flood of information in his mind, gradually piecing together his current circumstances. He was a first-year student at Mecha Academy, aspiring to become a Mecha Warrior. His academic performance was decent. Today, he had donned a practice mecha for the first time, entered a "Paradise," and participated in a live-fire training exercise. Then his memories cut off. He didn't know what had happened next, but when he awoke, he found himself in this wretched state— His body was in tatters, riddled with countless fractures and internal injuries. He clung to life only through the mecha's life support system and powerful, palliative-grade anesthesia. His consciousness—his soul—had been imprisoned within this nearly-destroyed humanoid training mecha by means beyond his understanding, like being stuffed into a coffin. He had completely lost all control and sensation of his physical body, able to control and perceive only the mecha. But the mecha's power was nearly depleted; not only could it no longer move, but its life support system was about to fail entirely. If his body died completely, his soul would be extinguished as well—a death beyond redemption. Though he now understood his situation, Xiao Bai wished he still remained ignorant... He had endured the arduous journey of transmigration, only to last less than ten minutes? Couldn't he at least be given a chance to struggle? Amidst this despair, Xiao Bai heard a familiar notification by his ear: Ding~ Calculation complete. Adaptive optimization in progress... 30%... 60%... 90%... Optimization complete. Evolution Panel activated. Commence your hunt. Then, he felt a tingling in his mind as a user manual sprouted within it— He had grasped the last straw in his desperate situation: the Evolution Panel. This panel allowed him to extract various equipment, modules, energy, and genes from the remains of creatures or objects, using them to upgrade his mecha and physical body. Directly obtain equipment and modules? Is that even possible? Xiao Bai marveled inwardly, recalling the knowledge stored in his mind. Equipment and modules—the former mounted externally, the latter integrated internally—formed the core combat power of a mecha. To acquire them traditionally, one had to venture into the Abyss Paradise to gather materials and components, then assemble and refine them using techniques also sourced from the Paradise. It was both arduous and perilous. Yet this 'last straw' could directly provide finished products? As for genes—they were even more precious! At the current technological level in this world, gene optimization technology remained in its elementary stages. The risks were high, the effects uncertain, and the costs shockingly prohibitive—only the wealthiest could afford to gamble on such enhancements. This Evolution Panel can actually optimize my genes with zero risk? Family, we're about to take off! After reading the instructions, Xiao Bai let out a sigh of relief. The panel's operation was simple: Ding~ Available resources detected. Initiating automatic collection. Xiao Bai felt a green beam shoot from his chest, scanning the pile of junk below. It then selected usable resources and stored them in the panel's built-in inventory. Organic energy collected: 3 Recyclable parts collected: 5 With two notifications, the collection process was complete. "Convenient, but it only works on corpses or 'ownerless' items like junk piles. Living creatures or operational machinery can't be collected. Plus, there's a three-meter range limit." Xiao Bai summarized the collection function's rules and usage. Then, two structural diagrams appeared before his eyes: one of the practice mecha, and one of his own body. Both diagrams were a ghastly crimson, like units in a real-time strategy game reduced to their steering wheels. Above the Mecha's structural diagram, five gear-like parts appeared. As Xiao Bai focused on them, their potential installation points automatically highlighted, complete with visual diagrams and functional descriptions. Three of the parts could repair the Mecha's visual sensors, preventing him from being left in the dark. The other two would stop the leaks in the Mecha's thighs. Using only his gaze to control the interface, Xiao Bai installed the parts as if he were swapping gear in a video game. This Evolution Panel was truly convenient—no wonder it was an advanced model. Just as he was marveling at it, his vision began to flicker and gradually returned. The camera was a bit blurry—too far or too close, and everything would just be a blur. It was probably about lock-picking level. Still, it was enough to observe the surroundings. Xiao Bai found himself in a massive landfill, surrounded by towering heaps of trash dozens of meters high, layered and overlapping like a dense forest stretching as far as the eye could see. Most of the trash consisted of mecha limbs and parts, with occasional broken mechanical heads scattered among the debris. It was like a giant graveyard for mecha. The air was thick with radiation and toxic substances, devoid of any signs of life. In the distance came a steady roar of machinery, punctuated by the grating sounds of metal being crushed and shredded. It was an autonomous robot resembling an excavator, using its bucket to fill a shredder in its chest with metal scrap. The machine pulverized the metal, compressed it into dense blocks, and then conveyed them into a cargo container towed behind it. Why was I thrown here? Weren't my grades decent enough? Surely I wasn't destined to be tossed into this scrap heap? What exactly happened on the day I lost my memories? Xiao Bai's mind was filled with questions, but this wasn't the time to ponder such things. Just surviving required all his strength. He tried using the panel's extraction function again, hoping to get more resources from the mountain of junk beneath him. The green light scanned for a while, but all he received was a cold notification: No usable resources detected. Please continue your hunt. No way! A mountain of trash as tall as several buildings, and that's all you can extract? Xiao Bai hadn't expected the "drop rate" to be so low. Then again, it made sense. After all, it was just junk. Finding anything usable at all would be a good result. Fortunately, there was no shortage of "prey" here, and none of it moved. If he searched through it all, surely he'd find some decent loot eventually, right? Despite being in such a desperate situation, Xiao Bai remained surprisingly optimistic.
