Chapter 1
I've Left the Demon Army. Please Let Me in a Hero Party. Chapter 1

'Beginners Welcome! We fight evil! Personal Experience: After joining this party, I realized that the world is a wonderful place!'

It was a flyer written in cute handwriting with a simple drawing of two swords crossing each other. Three people surrounded it and sighed.

"I guess idiots who would want to join a recently formed party only exist in beginner's town. We're in the frontlines of the war with the demon lord you know?"

The girl with pointed ears took a flyer from the pile on the table and bit at the meat in her other hand.

"It's too early to give up Louis! There are still many people in this city that haven't joined a party yet! Let's wait for them, okay?"

"Wait a second Nasha!? We're not looking for people to take care of the leftovers, alright!?"

While the elf named Louis was talking, the girl named Nasha continued to invite people who walked past them.

"There's nothing we can do about it. We were banned from the first beginners' town we got to because of our tremendous amount of debt…. Any more and our finances are going to drop even further. All because of some glutton (Louis) and soft hearted girl (Anastasia). We need to make some money fast…!"

Louis pointed at the sighing girl wearing red rimmed glasses named Suzette with the bone she was holding.

"You use a lot of money too saying that it's an offering to god! Get yourself together, miss treasurer!"

"O-of course I would give offerings to god! It's because the two of you use so much in the first place. Ah, it's going to be another day wasted!"

Three very different people. While they were feeling despair at not being able to recruit a new member at the city's small adventurer's guild, it appeared to them.

"Hey Nasha. What's that?"

Louis pricked her elf ears as she directed her eyes at the man that Nasha was carrying.

Although he was half stunned, the man took bite after bite of the food in front of him deliciously.

Nasha looked at him eat with a smile like Madonna, with her blue eyes sparkling.

"I saw him collapse on the street just now so I've offered him food."

"W-wait a second Anastasia. Don't tell me that money is…"

"It's not the money we were going to spend for dinner, right?"

As Suzette and Louis asked Nasha, with their faces twitching, all she did was say "Hmm?" with a smile on her face.

In her hands was an empty parcel.

"YOU'RE SUCH A SOFT HEARTED GIRL!!"

Louis and Suzette's cries echoed throughout the guild.

'Beginners Welcome! We fight evil! Personal Experience: After joining this party, I realized that the world is a wonderful place!'

I stared intensely at the flyer that was posted on the city's notice board.

"W-what the hell is this suspicious looking flyer……"

"Recruiting at the front lines, huh. The only people you'd find here are those who are heartbroken because they lost their party members."

"They could just have fun at beginner's towns."

The others that were looking at the same flyer I was scoffed, but I didn't care at all what they had to say about it.

All the recruiting notices on the other boards were recruiting people who could use a specific type of magic, but unfortunately I'm a demon that was in the demon lord's army. I could only use destruction magic, which was a very rare type of magic even among demon kind, so I didn't even meet the requirements anyway.

Actually, if I used this kind of magic, they would immediately figure out what I am.

So this flyer in front of me was one that I was so desperately looking for.

I - Eric Adel, was Commander of the First Battalion of the demon lord's army.

The First Battalion was one of the major commands of the army, and even among the others, was a quite high ranking one.

It's been five years since I joined the army. I know that I rose up in the ranks at an exceptional pace.

But the demon army was too much of a sweatshop.

I lost track of how many days in a row I was on duty after the tenth consecutive day.

After a while, I couldn't taste my food at all.

Sleeping over at the post was a natural thing to do now.

I was in a middleman position where I got pressure from my superiors, and complaints from beneath, all while unpaid overtime was on parade.

After the ninety-seventh consecutive day of duty, the incident happened.

"Commander Eric of the First Battalion. Three groups of hero parties have invaded demon territory. I'd like you to go defeat them."

"Ye-…wait! But Colonel Garlock! R-right now!? I was going to go home for the first time in a while - -"

"But that area is under your supervision, right?"

"But sir! My body's all creaky, so can't you swap with me just for today!?"

"Hmm. But you're not the only one having a hard time, you know? If you want to go easy on yourself, go ahead."

"…I'll do it."

"Good, thanks. Well then, I'll lend you one of my squadrons. I'd prefer if there aren't heavy casualties, but if it happens, make sure you write the casualty report and request for supplementary personnel and also do the commendations and stuff as well. I'm going to go walk my cerberus so I'm counting on you."

"Wh Sir!? I have to do all that too!? W-wait, ple -!"

In the end, I was able to fulfill the mission that my power harassment superior had given me and defeated the hero parties, but I can't really remember anything past the one hundredth consecutive day on duty.

The last conversation I had was…

"First Commander. About the damage done during the battle with the hero parties the other day--"

"Okay…got it."

"Commander. About the supplementary personnel, we are short on people everywhere so I'd like to get permission to recruit--"

"Okay…got it."

"Commander Eric, there are complaints from the Third Battalion about stray magic spells hitting their castle. What do you want to do abo--"

"SCREW THIS SHIIIIIIT!!!!!!!!"

--The next thing I knew; I was running away from the army.

I don't remember anything after that, but for some reason I was in an adventurer's city filled with heroes.

The city of 'Odelnights' was located at the border between human territory and demon territory. Because of that, there were many small skirmishes between the two groups every day.

It was ironic how I ended up in hero territory after I went crazy due to the one hundred consecutive days of duty and ran away.

The military uniform that I wore had disappeared somewhere.

The only thing left was my underwear.

Even if someone found my clothes, it would be that I died a mysterious death, so it was fine.

I currently had myself covered with a brown battered robe.

I look like someone who barely survived a battle.

Grrrrrr……

My stomach is rumbling. Now that I think about it, I haven't eaten anything since I ran from demon territory…

As I was thinking that, all the strength in my body started leaving me.

Right after, there was a person next to me, looking worried.

"Excuse me, are you all right?"

"You are…?"

The girl lent me her shoulder and all I could do was follow her into a nearby building.

"Anastasia Francesca von Mueller. Everyone calls me Nasha. Rather than that, your face looks so drawn! Please, eat something!"

"Um well, I don't have any money right now, so…"

"I'll pay for the food so don't worry about that! Waitress, please give him some really good food!"

The girl named Nasha who called a nearby waitress.

Buying food for a stranger like me can only be described as the act of an angel.

Tears started flowing from my eyes as I took mouthful after mouthful of food.

No one has ever been so kind to since I joined the demon army--No, since all this time I was alive…

"I'm so glad you like it! If you're so happy that you're crying, it makes me just as happy!"

A tear rolled down Nasha's cheek as well.

Meanwhile the two that were giving Nasha angry looks, maybe they're her friends.

"By the way--"

Nasha turned her head towards me.

"Are you interested in hero parties?"

Nasha was holding the flyer that I was looking at earlier in her hand.

"I saw that earlier and was thinking about joining!"

"Really? That's great! Please join us!"

I answered her immediately after seeing the flyer.

If this angel was a member of the party, I'll become happy for --.

"Wait a second!"   "Wait a moment please!"

The two behind Nasha looked at me with provocative glares, which seemed to swat away the hand that Nasha had held out.

The girl with the pointed ears started talking.

"We'll have you do an interview. If you pass we'll let you join! You'd better not thing we'd let anyone join our party!"

After hearing that, the other girl spoke up as well.

"It's quite sudden, but we can't let you in if you can't be useful. If you can manage to persuade us, only then will we accept you into our party."

Thus I, who was a former member of the demon lord army, began my interview to join a hero party.

Hey guys Kaoto here.

This is the first chapter of the mini project that I thought of doing.
It's the same author who wrote Isekai no Kishou Yohoushi, if you know the series.
(I don't think it's translated yet)
Planning to test the waters with the first few chapters, and if it looks like you guys enjoy it I'll finish this series 🙂
