Chapter 1
Crystal Monsters Episode 1
Kouchu Misako tossed and turned in his sleep, his brow furrowed. He dreamt he was standing in a huge, echoing cave. Water dripped from the ceiling, and strange, glowing crystals pulsed with light all around him.
“Woah,” Kouchu mumbled in his sleep. “Where am I?”
Suddenly, a voice echoed around him, deep and mysterious. “Kouchu Misako… we know you.”
Kouchu jumped, spinning around, trying to find the speaker. A figure shimmered into existence before him, a creature made of pure, swirling darkness with eyes like glowing embers.
“Who are you?” Kouchu stammered, feeling a shiver run down his spine.
“I am Somnus,” the figure boomed. “And your destiny awaits.”
Before Kouchu could ask what that meant, Somnus dissolved into shadows, vanishing without a trace. Kouchu gasped, jolting awake in his bed. The morning sun streamed through his window.
“Whoa! What a dream!” Kouchu exclaimed, sitting up. “Destiny? Crystal Monsters? What was that all about?”
He looked at the alarm clock. "I'm late!" He jumped out of bed, his mind racing. He had to tell someone about this. And he knew exactly who!
“Professor Shari!” Kouchu declared, grabbing his backpack. He knew Professor Shari ran a lab that researched the mysterious Crystal Monsters. Maybe she could explain his weird dream. And maybe... just maybe... he could become a Crystal Brawler!
He burst through the doors of Professor Shari's lab, nearly tripping over a pile of scientific journals. Professor Shari, a woman with bright pink hair and even brighter glasses, looked up from a bubbling beaker.
“Kouchu! Good morning! What exciting scientific discovery have you stumbled upon today?” she asked, her voice full of enthusiasm.
"Professor! I wanna be a Crystal Brawler!" Kouchu blurted out, completely bypassing a greeting.
Professor Shari raised an eyebrow, a skeptical look on her face. “A Crystal Brawler? Kouchu, with all due respect, becoming a Brawler requires more than just enthusiasm. It requires skill, strategy, and most importantly, a Crystal Monster partner."
“But I had this dream!” Kouchu insisted, launching into the story of Somnus and the crystal cave. Professor Shari listened patiently, tapping a pen against her chin.
When he finished, she smiled. "Intriguing, Kouchu. Very intriguing. While dreams alone don't make a Brawler, your passion is undeniable." She rummaged under a table and pulled out a small, glowing crystal ball. "Perhaps... perhaps I can show you something."
The crystal ball opened with a soft pop, and a small, four-legged creature with a sparkling, star-shaped pattern on its back scampered out. It looked like a spider, but way cooler.
"This is Roaracryst," Professor Shari announced. "He's a unique Crystal Monster with incredible star-powered abilities. Roaracryst, say hello to Kouchu."
Roaracryst stared at Kouchu with big, skeptical eyes. "Roar," he grumbled, which sounded suspiciously like, "Not impressed."
Kouchu beamed. "Wow! He's so awesome! Hi Roaracryst! I'm Kouchu, and we're going to be the best Crystal Brawler team ever!"
Roaracryst snorted, then scampered behind Professor Shari's leg. "Roar! Not likely!"
Professor Shari chuckled. "It seems you two need some time to warm up to each other. Now, Kouchu, before you can become a full-fledged Crystal Brawler, you need a license." She handed him a small card. "This proves you're trained to handle a Crystal Monster and participate in battles. Congratulations, Kouchu! You're officially a Crystal Brawler!"
Kouchu stared at the card in disbelief. "I'm a Brawler! YES!" He jumped up and down, accidentally bumping into a shelf of beakers. "Oops! Sorry, Professor!"
As they walked outside, Kouchu started chattering to Roaracryst. "This is so amazing, buddy! We're going to train hard, and we're going to become the Master Champions!"
Roaracryst peeked out from Kouchu's backpack. "Roar! You talk too much!"
Kouchu stopped dead in his tracks. "You... you can talk?!"
Roaracryst rolled his eyes. "Roar. Of course, I can talk. Did you think I was just making weird spider noises?"
Kouchu's jaw dropped. "I... I thought you were just a really vocal spider!" This was the most amazing day of his life!
Their moment of stunned silence was interrupted by a commotion down the street. A group of kids, teenagers with sneering faces, were cornering another boy, who looked about Kouchu's age.
"Give us the Crystal Balls, Himensho!" yelled a girl with a sharp, commanding voice. Kouchu would later find out that her name was Julia Denoku, leader of the Menace Five.
The boy, Sakuro Himensho, looked terrified. "I... I don't have them anymore! I gave them back to Professor Shari!"
"Liar!" another member of the group, Kathern Honika, sneered. "We know you're hiding them!" Another member, Genuan George began menacingly walking closer to Sakuro, cracking his knuckles.
Kouchu couldn't stand by and watch. "Hey! Leave him alone!" he shouted, running towards the group.
Julia Denoku turned to face him, a smirk on her face. "Well, well, well. Looks like we have a hero."
"These aren't your Crystal Balls," Kouchu said firmly. "They belong to Professor Shari!"
"And what are you going to do about it?" a menacing member of the group named Hiyon Morki asked, stepping forward.
"Yeah, newbie?" Katie Moshika added, cracking her knuckles.
"I'm going to stop you!" Kouchu declared, feeling a surge of adrenaline. He knew he wasn't a fighter, but he had to protect Sakuro.
Julia Denoku burst out laughing. "You? Stop us? You're just a kid!"
Suddenly, Roaracryst leaped out of Kouchu's backpack, landing between him and the Menace Five. His star-shaped back began to glow brightly.
"Roar!" Roaracryst growled, his voice surprisingly loud and intimidating. "Back off! Or face the wrath of the stars!"
The Menace Five hesitated, momentarily taken aback. Julia Denoku narrowed her eyes. "What is that thing?"
Roaracryst fired a burst of starlight energy, hitting the ground in front of the Menace Five. They jumped back in surprise.
"He's a Crystal Monster!" Katie Moshika exclaimed, recognizing the power.
Taking advantage of their hesitation, Kouchu grabbed Sakuro's hand and pulled him away. "Come on! Let's go!"
They ran back to Professor Shari's lab, the Menace Five hot on their heels. Safely inside the lab, Kouchu handed the stolen Crystal Balls to Professor Shari.
"Thank you, Kouchu," Professor Shari said, her expression grave. "You did the right thing. But be careful. The Menace Five are not to be trifled with. They are up to no good."
Outside, Julia Denoku glared at the lab. "He may have gotten away this time," she hissed, "but we'll get those Crystal Balls! And that little hero will regret interfering with us!"
Back inside, Kouchu looked at Roaracryst. "You were amazing, buddy! You really saved us!"
Roaracryst puffed out his chest. "Roar! Of course! I'm Roaracryst, protector of Justice Town!"
Kouchu grinned. "You know what? You're not just a star-powered spider. You're my best friend, Roaracryst!"
Roaracryst looked up at Kouchu, a hint of a smile on his face. "Roar. And you're not just a loudmouthed kid, Kouchu. You're... okay."
As the sun set over Justice Town, Kouchu and Roaracryst walked out of the lab, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. They were a team, a Brawler and his Crystal Monster, ready to take on the world, one star-powered battle at a time.
