The Fox Concubine Chapter 3

The inner part of the cave was quite different from the outward appearance. It is warm, like in the spring. The cave declined far down with the mountain height, and was made into a woody garden. Flowers were blooming, and the man-made waterfalls and facial rocks that decorated the hole gave it the look of an immortal realm.

I saw many foxes on the road, most of which were in human shape. Even the spirits liked to act and live as human beings. Some of them were young and their practice was not developed enough, so they still kept some fox-like characteristics, like fox ears, a long tail, etc. When they saw me, they bowed to greet me. I returned to them warm smiles.

We walked for a long time to reach my living place. It was a villa with pavilions and resident buildings.

Lee suddenly turned back to look at Moon, the so-called sister fox, and spoke as if he were the master of this place. “We are home now. You, the Fox Lady, can go back to take a rest.” Then he half-bowed to make a gesture of sending away the guest.

Moon was a little angry with this impoliteness, but she didn’t react to him. However, she spoke to me softly, “Sister-in-law, have a good rest here. I guess my brother will come back soon. Anyway, your time of passing the heavenly trial is near. Though you are still quarreling with each other, he will be back for this reason.” Moon gave me a look of special meaning, then she left.

Lee took my arm to go into my room. The room was so resplendent, like a room for the concubines in an ancient palace. There were many antiques and potted landscapes, which might take me some time to appreciate carefully.

So, it was not bad to live here. Much better than living in the modern society as a white collar worker. Besides, I was the leader of these fox people—what an imposing position. I had a chance to try a new life with many servants and warriors.  

“Huahua, you have a rest here. When you are better, I will take you to leave here. I didn’t prepare for a female fox coming back. Otherwise, I wouldn’t bring you here,” he said with regret before leaving my room.

The door was opened with a clanging sound, interrupting me my quietness.

I lay down on the bed and unfolded my arms and legs. The bed was soft and comfortable, with who know how many layers of quilts.

I really appreciated my optimistic spirit, otherwise, the weird things happening after the time-travel would have made me insane.

The fox spirit, what a meaningful word. I never guessed one day I would become a fox spirit as the legends mentioned. I thought about my future on the bed, thus loss my sleep.

I was a fake fox; this was the truth. Sooner or later, they would discover this. Since Moon and Lee were the two familiar with this fox body, if they found out the truth, they might be the first to kill me. So I needed to learn some immortal arts first.

Anyway, I was a fox spirit now, so learning some immortal arts should not be difficult to me. Even the cat spirit I picked on the road was so strong.

Coming to this understanding, I felt easy, and then fell asleep.

I didn’t know how long I slept. But when I heard some noises outside, I woke up unwillingly, waiting for someone to knock at my door.

The cave was so quiet and comfortable, and the noise meant I was getting some trouble.

As I guessed, after several minuets, somebody knocked at my door.

I rearranged my hair to make me look indifferent but elegant, and then answered, “Come in.”

Moon pushed the door open.

“Sister-in-law, it is bad that the golden pheasants living on the opposite mountain came to attack us.” Before finishing this, she had already ran to me to hold my arm, beckoning me to run out.

“Hey . . . wait!” I shook away her hand. My arm already had some blue tracks left by her scratch. “Anything wrong with those chickens? They dare to fight we foxes?”

Moon was stunned for a moment, then she explained to me, “Sister-in-law, did you forget this? The leader of the golden pheasants has 4,000 years of practice. He was only a little weaker than my brother. Now that the brother is not here, they have this great opportunity to attack us. On our Wanhu Mountain, only you and me have the power to defend us from all of them.”

Though she was anxious, she was not desperate. After thinking about it carefully for a while, she said to me, “Sister-in-law, we two came to fight their leader, leaving the other foxes some space to fight back with the normal pheasants. If we can fight until my brother comes back, we will win.”

We ran together so hard that we got many bumps on the way, until we finally arrived at the front line of the war. When my feet stood on the ground again, my mind became clearer.

“Leader of the pheasants, you dare to bully me and my sister-in-law? When my brother comes back, he won’t let you go easily!” Moon yelled at the pheasants, trying to stimulate our foxes’ fighting will. But she was such a beautiful young girl, her words had not a bit of force. Instead, some of the male pheasants began to stare at her with desire.

I couldn’t allow this situation to become worse. Although Moon thought that she and I together could fight with the leader, I was not her sister-in-law indeed. So my plan was to say something to put off the war.

I squinted my eyes to look at the leader. Gosh! This was a female pheasant.

Her figure was sexy, her waist slim and her bosom plentiful. Her long pink hair was styled in a wavy bun. The dress she was wearing was exquisite. Such a beauty was the pheasant queen.

I coughed and murmured to myself, I am a spirit, too. Spirits are always beautiful. Then I calmed down.

“Leader of the pheasants, you lead your followers to attack us. Do you just want a success or something else?” I tried to make my tone smooth, thus nobody could guess my real plan.

All of a sudden, the pheasants became quiet. My voice was not high, but they all heard my words clearly.

After a while, nobody answered me. I began to worry about this strategy. Was the opening statement wrong? I had watched many TV series, and most of the dramas gave us such an opening when showing a gang fight.

The leader began to laugh loudly.
