In the end, we ended up gathering at the meeting place for the quest that Nasha had accepted on her own.
Apparently, if you wanted to cancel the quest, you needed a large amount of money and lots of paperwork, and since we didn't that kind of money, there was no other way than to accept it.
Even if you failed, you had to pay a penalty as well.
Either way this party's finances had its back against a cliff.
Their finances were crumbling even with someone like Suzette, who seems pretty capable…
Things aren't looking too good for this party…
E-rank party 『Deared』.
It was a relatively new party, started around half a year ago.
Parties were given ranks, and they were ranks E-A, and on top of that there was ranks S, SS, and SSS.
But, 『Deared』 hadn't climbed a single rank yet since it was started.
They said it was because of Nasha's policy, which was 『Be as adventurer's should be, and work to help people』. They never joined subjugating monsters or fighting the demon army, but instead took jobs for the villagers that no one else wanted to do.
Hero parties that invaded demon territory usually had sturdy weapons and armor, but the members of 『Deared』were pretty lightly equipped.
On the way to the village, Nasha told him.
"This is the border between hero territory and demon territory, but not all of us living here are adventurers. I want to be a wonderful adventurer that helps the people that live here. That's why I don't pay much attention to rank."
--I think she's a completely rare kind of hero.
Enough to make me believe that if there were more heroes like her, there would be less fighting between demons and heroes.
In fact, the demon army has its own rules and chain of command.
But still there were some violent demons who went out of control and harm the hero side, and that was enough to convince the heroes to believe that demons were evil.
There are demons that are part of the army, but there are some that are not as well.
Heroes attack them regardless, and I couldn't stand that.
Do they even know how much extra work they gave me by coming into demon territory with stupid delusions that true justice will come when they defeat the demon army…!?
"Well, demons are a bunch of savages so shouldn't we just beat up all of them?"
Louis said blankly.
"In Shuva's teachings, it says that demons are the descendants of the fallen god that turned away from him. If the demon lord pledges allegiance to Shuva, he will definitely forgive them."
Nonetheless, the cleave between the heroes and the demons seem pretty deep…
I guess I can't let them find out I'm a demon.
"Ah, everyone, it looks like we've arrived!"
Nasha jogged towards a small sign in front of them.
Past the sign that said 『Village of Dorgo』, were fields and gardens with a few houses standing in the middle.
It was exactly on the border, and it was in an area where there were many skirmishes even back when I had jurisdiction over the army.
"Ahh heroes. Heroes…have finally come…! Thank you so much!"
An old woman walked over from the center of the village.
Her shabby clothes seemed to resemble what kind of hardships the village had to endure until now.
"So, what's the problem? Have the demons invaded the area again?"
Louis sighed and looked around the area.
"Recently the heroes have been invading demon territory more frequently, so a part of the demon army is retaliating by invading this area because heroes aren't here. We can't farm because of the pack of three-headed dogs and their owner in the area. Even my arm--"
The old woman then held out her feeble arm.
"I see…it's a kind of venom."
Suzette looked at it and muttered.
It was like she had a bluish-purple tattoo on her arm.
This symptom--I've seen this before.
"Three-headed dog, so a Cerberus…huh? Where have I…"
"Eric, you must've been a part of a group that went deep into demon territory before to immediately know that it's from a Cerberus!"
Suzette poked me with her elbow, looking surprised.
The only kind of three-headed dog that inflicts venom when it bites is a Cerberus.
Nonetheless, Cerberus were quite popular pets among demons, but there was a regulation that only allowed them to be used to repel the heroes when they attacked.
Letting them run free in hero territory was a violation of military law and was subject to punishment.
Confiscation of a month's salary at best, and in the worst case, demotion.
To be honest, the demons are trying their best not to stir up trouble the best they can.
"Huh. So basically you guys want us to drive them off."
"Yes. But the owner of the Cerberus…is a colonel in the demon army, so we couldn't find a good way to deal with him--"
Hmm? A colonel?
It was right as the question popped into my head and the old woman was trying to continue.
"H-he's here! The three-headed dogs are here as well! Hurry elder, you need to hide!"
A young man ran up from the middle of the village.
I felt a wave of mana coming from the forest. A strong, dense mana.
"And we're here. Finally done with work. Ceru-chan, Bero-chan**, go run around for a while."
"Woof!! Woof woof!!"
"Ruff!! Ruff Ruff!!"
The man said to the Cerberus in a soft voice that he never used when talking to me before.
The man who face this way with an expression that I never imagined he could wear.
"I'm here in secret, so be careful not to play too roughly you guys. Aww, you guys are such good boys."
--The man with unkempt hair and a stubbly beard.
It was someone who I remembered clearly, my power harassment superior, Garlock.
Hey guys Kaoto here.
Looks like a lot of you guys already want this series to be continued, so I've decided to finish this series.
It's really short, and I believe most of the chapters are short as well, so if you could think of it as something like a short 3-5 minute read before bed 🙂
Chapter end
