Chapter 344: Chapter 0327: Young Master Bao Sees Emergency Cases

Young Master Bao and his mother had been in the United States for quite some time, and having just received their green cards, they were incredibly excited.

Young Master Bao became overwhelmed with excitement and late one night in his mansion's bathroom he nearly plunged headfirst into the toilet, and then took a tumble. His already injured right knee joint twisted once more, adding insult to injury as it immediately swelled and caused such pain that Young Master Bao grimaced in agony.

Being unfamiliar with the United States and unable to speak English fluently, they could only turn to Manager Qian for help.

Manager Qian was the head of the Bao Family's real estate company's office in New York. American officials wouldn't even allow them to build a house or renovate a lawn.

In truth, this office was only to serve mother and son. They acted as their life assistant. The task of medical appointment was carried out by Manager Qian who enlisted a multinational medical intermediary company and made an appointment with Professor Robert at a specialized surgical hospital in New York.

Mrs. Bao picked up the phone and dialed Manager Qian's number, who was in bed at the time.

“Mrs. Bao, we still need to wait a while for Junhao's medical appointment,” Manager Qian blurted out.

Everytime Mrs. Bao called, she would be pressing for the medical appointment. The hospital ranked first in the world in orthopedics, boasting top experts in Sports Medicine. They had a long waiting list of patients from all around the world. It wasn't like in their home country, where one could simply pay a few dollars to see a doctor.

Mrs. Bao was unhappy: “Please come over quickly. Junhao has taken a tumble in the bathroom and can't bear the pain in his right knee joint. Please take him to the doctor promptly.”

Disgruntled, Manager Qian mumbled, “What was Young Master Bao doing to fall in the bathroom late at night? His motor coordination seems off,” as he crawled out of bed, hurriedly got dressed, almost falling over in the process.

Groggily, Manager Qian drove to the Bao Family's mansion. Luckily, the roads were clear and he lived close by, so he reached within ten minutes.

Young Master Bao was lying on the couch with Mrs. Bao applying an ice pack to his knee. Hearing the doorbell, Mrs. Bao swiftly opened the door.

“Manager Qian, it's not good. Junhao is in terrible pain. Can we go to the hospital and request Professor Robert to see him tonight? We will pay more,” Mrs. Bao expressed anxiously.

“Mrs. Bao, this isn't about the money. The appointment is set, and there's no such thing as pushing it forward. Besides, the professor doesn't work at night; there's no such thing as seeing patients at night,” Manager Qian explained as he patted his bald head.

“Why aren't you more competent? Can't you use your connections to move up the appointment to tomorrow? Increase the consultation fee by ten times!” An agitated Mrs. Bao retorted.

“The patients ahead of us at the international medical center are either wealthy or influential figures – sports stars, politicians, and wealthy businessmen from all over the world. Giving them more money won't help expedite things; they don't need it. We just need to wait,” Manager Qian clarified frankly.

“Our Junhao is a star player too. Do they pay more than us?” Mrs. Bao showed dissatisfaction.

Manager Qian was helpless: “Mrs. Bao, the ones with appointments ahead of Junhao include three NBA frontline stars, a prince from the United Arab Emirates royal family, and the foreign minister of a certain Eastern European country. Which one of them lacks money?”

Meaning, stop talking about money. These people are waiting too. What makes you feel entitled not to wait?

If you consider Young Master Bao a star player, that's just a family joke. He couldn't hold a candle to any real star athlete.

“So what do we do now?” Mrs. Bao was also out of ideas.

“We have two options. Either go to the hospital's emergency room – given Junhao's condition, we probably won't even see a doctor until tomorrow morning; or go to a private clinic, something like a family doctor. We may have to wait for one to two hours, but we'll be able to see a doctor,” Manager Qian provided his suggestions. Despite the mistreatment, he was still diligent about his responsibilities and had served the Bao family for over a decade.

Left with no choice, they had to listen to Manager Qian.

“So be it,” Mrs. Bao was defeated. Other than venting her anger at Manager Qian, she had no better ideas.

Manager Qian drove Mrs. Bao and Young Master Bao to a familiar private clinic offering emergency medical services.

Upon entering, a nurse asked for a brief medical history and performed a physical exam of Young Master Bao, and then guided them to the waiting room to wait their turn after affixing a label to him.

There were already several people sitting in the waiting room. The doctor took his time examining the patients. Although many names were called out, they didn't hear theirs. Even worse, a few who arrived after them were called in before them.

Young Master Bao, whose keen eyes had picked up on this, asked, “What's going on? They came after us, why did they go in before us?”

“They arrange the order of examination based on the severity of the patients' condition. Your condition is considered to be not very serious so you were given a green label and have been moved to the back of the queue. If no more severe cases come in, then it will be your turn. If more serious cases do come in, we'll have to wait,” Manager Qian explained patiently, fully aware and frustrated at their lack of understanding of life in America despite having received their green card.

If this had happened in their home country, Mrs. Bao and Young Master Bao would have exploded by now. Young Master Bao might have even hurled his crutch at a nurse.

But now, he didn't dare act out. Not long ago, a fellow countryman had argued with a doctor and nurse in the emergency room, even grabbing the nurse's uniform. When the police arrived and ordered him to let go, step back, and raise his hands, he refused.

Without uttering another word, the cop brought his whip down directly onto that guy's shoulder, causing a fracture. Then, he pinned him to the ground with his knee and caused a fracture in his rib as well.

In the end, the two cops handcuffed the man and dragged him to the police station.

The police presented him with two options: be charged with second-degree murder and face jail time, or be deported and forbidden to enter the United States for twenty years. Repenting his move, the guy was deported, and indeed banned from re-entry for twenty years.

Such a vivid example has turned Junhao Bao into a tame cat; even when someone spits in his face, he dares not react rashly, not to mention fight back.

After a full two hours, it was finally Junhao's turn. The doctor was patient and kind. He asked for Junhao's medical history, conducted a physical examination, and handed him a prescription to buy medication from a pharmacy after removing his gloves. Then the nurse led them to a treatment room and gave him two ice packs to ice his knees.

After a two-hour wait, just like that Junhao's appointment was over. On checking out, they were presented with a bill of two thousand dollars.

“Do you think I'm a bumpkin, that you can rip me off?”

Junhao gritted his teeth but restrained his voice, ultimately holding back his outburst.

Manager Qian patted Junhao's shoulder, “This is how it is in the United States; healthcare is expensive. In fact, without insurance, a single ambulance ride could bankrupt some people. Come on, I'll take you to buy the medicine.”

“Daddy ain't paying.” Young Master Bao chokes out, his voice barely audible.

Manager Qian was taken aback, realising he was joking. “Treat it as a joke. They aren't scared of you skipping payment. If you have the means to pay but refuse, debt collection lawyers will soon be knocking on your door. And once your credit is ruined, you basically won't have a future in the United States.”

“If you don't have insurance, you can negotiate a discount. Since we do have insurance, let's not make trouble for money's sake. Go get the medicine.” Manager Qian urged Junhao to hurry and buy the meds.

Junhao was so furious he felt like he was on fire. It wasn't about the money, but more about whether he had been played for a fool.

Back in his home country, a few hundred RMB could solve the problem – a few painkillers and a couple of cold compresses, maybe even less than a tenner.

Now he was paying two thousand dollars, over ten thousand RMB. He had to get the meds himself with the prescription. Wasn't this a joke?

“Junhao, let it go, these are their rules, we can't break them.” Mrs Bao looked at her son's expression and was worried he would get into trouble.

“Sir, can I assist with something?”

A tall black security guard walked over to them, a gun holstered at his waist.

Junhao wanted to speak, but he didn't have the English vocabulary to deal with the situation.

Since Manager Qian immediately said, “No problem, thank you. We'll be leaving soon.”

When Junhao stood up, the security guard tried to help him, making him shiver in fear. The man towered over him, his arm size comparable to Junhao's leg.

Manager Qian took Mrs Bao and Young Master Bao to a chain pharmacy to buy medicine, and then took them back to the mansion. After a full night of running around, Manager Qian felt like his bones were falling apart.

A few pills were housed within a cylinder; their names weren't listed, only instructions on how to take them.

“What if these are steroids?” Mrs Bao worried.

Junhao sat on his sofa at home, a glass of water in front of him and a small pill in his hand. He flipped it back and forth, hesitant to take it.

“There's no name for the medication. How can I take it?” Junhao remained reluctant to swallow it.

Manager Qian hoped he would hurry up and take the medicine; he still needed to get home and rest.

“It's fine, the doctor said it's a painkiller. Americans all do this, and they're still living fine, aren't they?” Manager Qian tried to encourage him.

Gathering his courage, Junhao took the pill, and at last, Manager Qian could leave.

However, Young Master Bao had a miserable night: after all that hassle, he received merely a few pills which weren't even useful.

In pain, he tossed and turned in bed throughout the night, unable to sleep. This situation also worried Mrs Bao, she was at a loss about what to do.

She could only keep calling Manager Qian, who could only reiterate the doctor's advice, “Apply a cold compress and distract yourself.”

How to distract oneself? By watching television. So, Young Master Bao stayed up all night watching TV.
