When the Chinese army took back Stone City, they instructed the Japanese in the hospital to surrender. However, the Japanese did not surrender. Instead, they all took their own lives.

“From what I’ve heard, the Chinese army wanted to forcefully take the building. As a result, many of the people were in a rush and could not find swords to perform Seppuku. So, many of them jumped off the building or cut their throats with scalpels to take their own lives.
