The director cupped his hand and said, “Okay then, I’ll call you Mr. Ye in public places then.”

The woman stared intensely at the ceiling. Not only did she have a painful expression, but she was also fearful.”

The woman had her mouth and eyes wide open as she stared somewhere at the ceiling. Unfortunately, the camera was unable to capture what she saw from the angle on which it was mounted.

After about three minutes, the door to the delivery room opened and a short woman walked into the room. She had a hunched back and had a red cloth around her head. White hair flowed from beneath the red cloth. Ye Shaoyang guessed that she was an old woman. She wore a black gown that went all the way down to the floor. She carried a black chain in one hand and a basket full of hell notes in the other.

Xie Yuqing covered her mouth and said, “This woman is--”

“Officer Xie, please keep watching.”

In the video, a doctor noticed that the door was open. The doctor asked the nurse to close the door. When the nurse turned, Ye Shaoyang recognized her as Xu Yajuan.

Xu Yajuan walked passed the old woman and closed the door. After that, she walked back to her post and got back to work. Soon, the old woman came close enough for the woman that was giving birth to notice her. The woman pointed fearfully in her direction. Even though the video had no sound, it was clear from her actions that the woman saw the old woman and was terrified.

The doctors and the nurses quickly looked to where the woman was pointing, but they didn’t seem to notice the old woman. Two nurses moved close to the woman to console her.”

“I believe only the woman was able to see the old woman,” the director said.

“Excuse me but,” Xie Yuqing wanted to know, “why was the camera able to capture her presence?”

“Those doctors and nurses are under the old woman’s spell. She probably used a spirit blinding trick on them, but she didn’t know that there was a camera. That’s why she didn’t hide appropriately. Cameras are like mirrors. Spirits may blind people to their presence, but a mirror will still reflect their image.”

The old woman walked in front of the woman and blew into the woman’s face. The woman stopped moving. Then the old woman climbed on top of the woman, opened her mouth and continuously blew into the woman’s mouth.

After wrapping the chain around the baby, she pulled on it until the baby got into her basket, but something strange happened. Even after the old woman pulled the baby into her basket, another baby remained on the examination bed and was taken care of by the nurses and doctors.

The old woman walked out the room and the video changed to show the corridor. Ye Shaoyang figured it was the corridor outside the delivery room.

As the old woman walked, she pulled out hell notes from her basket and threw them into the air. Hell notes filled the air while small figures started to appear behind her. They appeared to be babies crawling and following the old woman.

Ye Shaoyang sighed as he watched the scene.

Soon, the old woman and all the babies behind her disappeared leaving behind an abundance of hell notes. The video returned to the delivery room in chaos. Nurses ran around. Doctors tried their best to stop the woman’s bleeding, and without them even noticing, a woman with long hair rose from the pool of blood on the floor. She bent down and licked the blood off the floor.

“I can’t...”

Xie Yuqing held Ye Shaoyang’s arm as her body began to shake. Even though it was through a screen, the scene was still too terrifying for her to handle.

After the video ended, the director turned to the two of them and said, “That woman died from blood loss. Strangely enough, the baby she gave birth to is completely healthy and normal.”

Shocked by what she heard, Xie Yuqing asked, “How is that possible? Wasn’t the baby pulled away by the old woman?”

The director did not answer; instead, he turned to Ye Shaoyang and asked, “Mr. Ye, what do you think?”

Ye Shaoyang slowly said, “That was an underworld midwife.”

“What is that?” Xie Yuqing asked. Even from the name, she felt that it was scary.

“It’s a spirit that lives in the underworld and uses blood and Qi to cultivate, yet it is different than the corpse-eating spirits. Unlike the corpse-eating spirit, the underworld midwife only appears in the mortal realm once in a while. It specifically chooses women who are about to give birth. Right before a woman gives birth, it blows mouthfuls of spirit Qi into the mother and uses the umbilical cord to transmit it to the baby. When the baby is born, it takes away its soul.

“Because the spirit Qi was introduced to the baby through the umbilical cord, the baby recognizes the spirit Qi as something friendly and follows the owner of the Qi.
