There was a woman’s weeping, mixed with some strange sounds in the background.

Ye Shaoyang sat up and looked towards the bathroom. It was the middle of the night. Moonlight penetrated the window and illuminated the glass wall of the bathroom. Through the faint moonlight, Ye Shaoyang could see a woman with long messy hair on the other side of the semi-transparent glass wall. She leaned on the glass wall as blood continued to ooze out of her face and extended her abnormally long tongue to lick the glass wall. Apparently, she was the source of the strange sounds Ye Shaoyang heard.

Damn, there’s really a spirit here!

Ye Shaoyang had not expected to see such a scene in the middle of the night. However, he quickly focused his senses. The spirit qi emitted by the spirit was rather weak. As she crawled across the floor towards Ye Shaoyang, her eyeballs protruded out of their sockets and blood oozed out of her face. It was indeed a horrifying sight.

Ye Shaoyang played along and pretended to ask fearfully, “What do you want?”

“Get out. Get out of the room,” the female spirit said in a cold stern voice with her finger pointing at Ye Shaoyang. In other cases, people would have fled the scene without a second thought, but not this case. Ye Shaoyang waited until the female spirit’s hand touched his neck before replacing the fearful look with a stern and calm expression, “Why do you want to chase me away?”

The female spirit was caught off guard by his sudden change. She was stunned for a second before she increased her efforts and revealed more disgusting faces in an attempt to scare Ye Shaoyang off.

Ye Shaoyang shrugged nonchalantly, “Tell me. I will spare you from harsh punishment since you were only trying to scare me off instead of harming me. Perhaps I can even help you if you are experiencing hardship.”

The female spirit startled. She backed up when she suddenly realized whom she was dealing with, “You are a sorcerer!”

Ye Shaoyang sighed. This spirit was really weak. It took her such a long time to realize that he was a sorcerer. Otherwise, she would not have put up such a show. Ye Shaoyang grabbed the spirit with one hand and captured it effortlessly. While there was suffering in her eyes, she did not beg for mercy.

Ye Shaoyang stared into her eyes, “You don’t want to be transcended?”

The spirit simply nodded.

“Why not beg for mercy?”

The spirit sighed, “Begging will not change anything since you have already captured me. Although it is not my will, you can have it your way.”

As she spoke, tears streamed down her face. While spirits had no real tears, they could naturally mimic crying when they were sad so that it looked no different than a real person’s weeping.

Ye Shaoyang asked, “Is there something troubling you? Just tell me.”

The spirit looked at him. Finally convinced that he was sincere, she began to recount her story, “My name is Xu Handan. I’m a local. I died half a year ago, but before I was dead, I had a boyfriend. He was from a wealthy family while I came from a normal one. We were together for three years, and I gave him everything I had to offer.

His parents disapproved of our relationship. They set him up with another girl from a matching background and were going to force him to be with her, so we decided to run away. We wanted to start anew in another city. I texted him, and we decided to meet that night, right here in this room. However, I bumped into a robber on my way here and he stabbed me. I crawled my way to this hotel. When the owner saw me like that, he pretended as if he didn’t see a thing, and locked the door. Finally, I succumbed to the wound and died of blood loss.”

She paused and sadness crossed her face, “Now that I’m dead, I can never run away with him. However, I need to tell him things I had not told him when I was alive. That’s why I remained as a spirit. I was waiting for him to arrive, but he never did. I believed that he had some urgent matters to attend to and that he would get here once he could. I waited and waited until today.”

Ye Shaoyang sighed as he was touched by the story, “Why don’t you look for him at his home?”

“I went once, but his house is protected by powerful talisman paper and I could not get through. I had no choice but to wait for him here. I do not want anyone else to stay in this room since he could be here any day, so I scared off everyone who checked in here. The owner noticed something unusual. He hired a lousy sorcerer, but the sorcerer could not capture me, so he stuck a talisman paper on the door and trapped me in this room.

“That sorcerer was quite kind. He left a passage to the underworld in his talisman paper so I could go to the underworld anytime I want, but I don’t want to go. All I want is to see him once more. I want to know why he wasn’t here, and how has he been,” she sighed. “I guess a dead person is like a blown-out fire. There’s no use thinking of all these things, is there?”

Ye Shaoyang could not answer that, so he asked another question instead, “Pretty Xu, are you saying that the owner knew you were in this room all along?”

Xu Han Dan nodded, “That crooked businessman is a coward. Although he was not the one who killed me, he could have helped me and I would have lived. Besides, the sorcerer specifically told him not to let anyone stay in this room. The sorcerer said that I would willingly go into the underworld when I finally came to my senses and that allowing people to stay in this room would cause me to hurt people out of resentment. However, this fellow only sees dollar signs. Whenever he runs out of rooms or there are tourists coming from out of town, he arranges them to stay in this room. If they are scared off, he rents this room to another tourist. There are quite a few tourists that come here, and they usually are here once in their lifetime, so the owner does not hope that they will return.”

Ye Shaoyang shook his head in disappointment. It was not an offense to forgo helping someone in the mortal world, but the owner would definitely face consequences when he finally went to the underworld. Ye Shaoyang arranged a plan and he offered an arrangement to Xu Han Dan.

“How about this? Since that crooked businessman tried to scam me by letting me stay in this room, would you like to help me by giving him a taste of his own medicine? After that, I will bring you to your lover, you will see him for one last time, and then I will send you off to the underworld. Deal?”

Xu Han Dan was pleasantly surprised and nodded, “I will be satisfied if I could just find out how he is faring now. I will do exactly what you say, master.”

“Great. For now, just hide and listen to my instructions.”

Xu Han Dan laughed mischievously, “I’ve wanted to scare the crap out of him for so long! He was smart and would not come into this room.”

“I will make him.”

After knocking for a long time, Xiao Ma finally opened the door with his eyes half-closed, “It’s the middle of the night, dude. What’s wrong?”

Ye Shaoyang ordered, “Wake up, I need you to do something for me.”

“Now?” Xiao Ma yawned and returned to his bed. He dove back into his bed and mumbled, “Let me sleep for just a while more. I’ll come look for you after that...”

“Seriously?” Ye Shaoyang asked. Xiao Ma only snorted in reply.

Ye Shaoyang smirked. He knew just the right motivation Xiao Ma needed. Ye Shaoyang held Xiao Ma’s ear and whispered, “By the way, this is really easy money. I was thinking about giving you ten thousand when the job was done but suit yourself. Go back to sleep if you don’t want the money.”

Just as Ye Shaoyang finished his sentence, the snoring stopped. Xiao Ma turned his face to Ye Shaoyang, “Is there really money in it?”
