Chapter 1252: Chapter 1224: Leisurely Doorstep Challenge Chapter 1252: Chapter 1224: Leisurely Doorstep Challenge “Auntie!” Kiara, seeing Sonya Cornelle heading for the door, hurriedly called out to her and followed her outside.
This Auntie Sonya was really interesting, like a knight-errant stirring up trouble. She would shout out against injustice and then walk away as if nothing had happened, truly concealing her talents and her fame!
Sonya Cornelle was momentarily stunned when she heard herself being addressed in this manner, but then her face showed delight, “You became Kevin's student? Did he ask you to call me this?”
“Uh…” It was true she had taken a master, but not at the master's behest had she been told to call her this. Yet, seeing the joy on Sonya Cornelle's face, Kiara didn't have the heart to tell the truth, so she brazenly lied while looking her in the eye.
“Yes, my master told me. He said I have an auntie, which is you. I truly didn't expect that we're actually one family.”
Sonya Cornelle seemed even happier upon hearing this and looked ever more kindly upon Kiara.
“Not bad, you're a good child. It was destiny that led Kevin to find you. Such a good child indeed should not be abandoned.”
Kiara failed to notice the underlying meaning in her words and continued to ask, “Auntie, what brings you here?”
“I've been traveling everywhere recently. I heard there was a National Women's Virtue Lecture here and wanted to see for myself. I just happened to see that fellow spouting nonsense and deceiving people, so I intervened. Child, how did you come here?”
“My mom dragged me here.” Kiara grimaced woefully; having a superstitious mum was truly despairing.
Today, Sonya Cornelle's intervention, along with the previous rescue, greatly altered Kiara's prior impression of her as a divine swindler, even sparking some fondness. After a brief chat, Kiara deftly changed the subject to the matter she had previously discussed with Andrew Farmstead.
“Auntie, there's something I don't quite understand, my senior brother, uh, I mean my master asked me to consult you about it.”
Kiara had intended to truthfully say it was the senior brother who had asked, but fearing that Sonya Cornelle would be evasive, as Andrew Farmstead's face certainly didn't carry as much weight as a master's, she instead falsely claimed it was Yuzo Joel who sent her.
“Child, ask your question.”
“It's like this, I've been researching a topic recently, about the inherent goodness of human nature. But I've hit a snag on the part that discusses the innate differences in temperaments. My master said you are proficient in the Classic of Changes and asked me to seek your guidance.”
Sonya Cornelle had initially been listening to Kiara with a smile, but upon hearing these words, her expression changed dramatically.
“He… he asked you to inquire of me?”
“Yes, my master said no one knows better than you do.” Kiara continued her ruse.
Sonya Cornelle's mind immediately became a chaos.
She thought, could it be that Kevin had become confused? Was he trying to use her to reveal the events of the past to this child?
No, that can't be. Kevin is so cautious in his dealings; how could he possibly, after hiding it for so many years, suddenly permit her to speak about it?
Kiara merely wanted to discuss the origins of mankind from a philosophical perspective with Sonya Cornelle. She figured these highly skilled people surely held some research discoveries unknown to others, and she wanted to seek guidance to help broaden her own thinking. However, she hadn't anticipated seeing such an astonished expression on Sonya Cornelle's face.
On one hand, Sonya Cornelle didn't want to offend Yuzo Joel and worsen the relationship between them, yet she wasn't sure if it was Yuzo Joel who had sent Kiara to probe for information. Thus, she offered an equivocal response.
“Have you heard of the research on soul weight?”
“I know a little, but isn't this research very controversial?” she said. “I remember that scientists overseas have been studying this, claiming that a person becomes 21 grams lighter after death, and this 21 grams is the weight of the soul. However, the results of the research are highly debated, and to this date, there are no definite conclusions. Religious figures, on the other hand, are overjoyed by these studies.”
In the domestic region, atheism is upheld, insisting that death is the end just like the extinction of a flame, but research on the soul has never been given up overseas. Kiara, having had an experience of reincarnation herself, is inclined towards the research from overseas, but there hasn't been much progress on this topic over the years, and she doesn't understand much about it either.
“Whether the soul truly exists or is a figment of the imagination, maybe this line of thought can help you resolve your confusion.”
Kiara felt that there was something in there, she wanted to draw more words out of Sonya Cornelle, but Sonya Cornelle didn't want to stay any longer and left with an excuse.
Kiara wasn't very satisfied with this outcome. She had thought that Sonya Cornelle, the philosophy master, would provide her with some valuable information, but instead, she brought up these elusive and illusory matters. This made Kiara feel like she was being brushed off, or perhaps Sonya Cornelle had abandoned the scientific system she used to follow after years of practice and started to solve problems using Taoist philosophical frameworks, which was no different from her superstitious mum…
“Kiara!” Kiara's mother came back looking like a female warrior, with Arlong and the ticket refund money in her pocket.
“Humph, these scammers are so hateful, but thank goodness we got the money back! Come on, I'll take the two of you to buy some clothes with this money!”
Kiara shook her head; she had more important things to do now.
“Mum, Arlong and I have something to do, you go home and cook for us, we'll be back after we're done.”
“Where are you going?” Kiara's mother was worried; her daughter was pregnant, and she wished she could stick by her side every moment.
“I'm going to see my father-in-law and buy something to take there,” Kiara lied.
Upon hearing that she needed to go, Kiara's mother agreed immediately. How could her daughter come back to Q City and not visit her in-laws?
“Then go ahead, and give my regards to your father-in-law.”
At the Yuno Family, only Mr. Yuno remained; Mother Yuno had retired and no longer needed to deal with work, so she stayed with Isaac's family, helping to take care of the baby and often cooking delicious food for Kiara.
Making up an excuse for her mum, Kiara took Arlong straight to the address of the charlatan her mum had mentioned.
On the way, Arlong was rubbing his hands in anticipation; he had been waiting for this opportunity.
Mario Yuno called Kiara and said that the reinforcements he had arranged for were already in place, lying in wait outside the charlatan's house, just waiting for Kiara to arrive.
When she arrived, Kiara indeed saw about a dozen young men standing by the side of the road, all in plain clothes. They uniformly greeted her as “Sister-in-law” when they saw her.
Kiara knew right away that these were the men from Mario Yuno's old unit who had come to help. As Kiara pondered, she thought that directly trashing the place wasn't suitable; it felt too simple and brutish, not satisfying enough. She was contemplating the best way to handle this when suddenly, another group approached, each carrying sticks and bricks.
She had no idea who these people were, but they all had a murderous look on their faces, as if they meant trouble.
On Kiara's side, Arlong took the lead, and they quickly encircled her, as protecting Kiara was the top priority.
The other group was led by an energetic woman dressed in a fiery red tracksuit, full of spirit and bravado, with a beautiful but arrogant face that captured the attention.
Kiara was attracted by the aura of this woman. Having met many people, she could usually tell what someone was like at a glance; not only was this woman dressed in fiery red, but her personality seemed fiery too.
The woman spotted Kiara's group and scanned over with sharp eyes. A woman beside her, resembling a secretary, noticed the change in the leader's eyes and with a wave of her hand, commanded, “Attack!”
