Chapter 1233: Chapter 1205: Yuzo Joel's Special Care Chapter 1233: Chapter 1205: Yuzo Joel's Special Care Buddha says, “A hermit should not stay for three nights under a mulberry tree, lest he grow too fond of the world of the living and its mortal attachments.” Even when staying beneath a mulberry tree for three times can foster affection, how much more so with people?
She and Rico Clark could be considered to have shared a father-daughter bond over two lifetimes. Under one roof, they had lived as a family for so long–so why did she not feel overwhelmed with grief upon hearing of his fatal illness? Was this not too callous?
Kiara's dilemma was just this.
She turned on the TV and caught a news story about a little girl who had been abused by her stepfather. Even with the image pixelated, the child's battered form was apparent. Kiara felt uncomfortable at the sight and went to the bathroom to wash her hands.
After washing for quite a while without feeling better, she looked up and was startled by Yuzo Joel standing in the doorway.
“How did you get in!”
Yuzo Joel jangled a master key, “I knocked for a long time and you didn't answer, so I found a way in–what's wrong?”
He immediately noticed Kiara's wrinkled, over-washed hands. How long had she been washing them? Could her Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, which hadn't manifested in such a long time, have resurfaced?!
“I don't know, I was just feeling agitated.”
Kiara shook the water off her hands, and Yuzo Joel, seeing her detached expression, knew she was troubled. He didn't hurry to question her and placed the food he brought on the table, beckoning Kiara to come and eat.
Kiara took a few bites, then lost her appetite. Seeing this, Yuzo Joel spoke up.
“You've provided end-of-life care to many patients. You should know that people go through several psychological stages when facing death: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. But these stages aren't linear, and some might skip stages. It's the same when we know a loved one may pass away soon. Are you upset because you heard about his illness?”
Kiara wasn't surprised he knew about the matter; Aka, under Yuzo Joel, was first-rate in intelligence gathering.
“It's not because of him; he has no connection to me. I'm just upset because I saw a news story about a child in a terrible situation,” Kiara argued defensively.
Yuzo Joel shook his head.
“You're seeing only the 'effect' and ignoring the 'cause.' How can cause and effect be separated? There's plenty of such news, so why would your condition flare up upon learning of his illness? This shows that his situation is still affecting you subconsciously, but you're unwilling to confront it.”
Realizing that Kiara was glaring at him with murderous eyes, Yuzo Joel quickly said, “If you're unhappy, you can take it out on me. Haven't we agreed that we lash out only at the ones closest to us? You taking your anger out on me is truly okay.”
“I don't care about him! What is he to me? Hiding my acceptance letter, calling me a little bastard, and doing so many things against my interests. If Camden and I weren't capable of keeping him in check, he would definitely be messing things up for me outside. Now that he's sick, I'm definitely not going to be his donor!”
“Of course, even if you wavered and thought about being a donor, Arua and I would never agree,” Yuzo Joel said firmly. Kiara was pregnant, and perhaps they were counting on her to attempt a donation after the child was born, a convenient time for Rico Clark's chemotherapy. Yuzo Joel would never agree to such a thing.
“Everyone says bone marrow donation doesn't harm the donor, but let those who are willing to donate do so. You absolutely cannot, understand?”
“No shit! I'm not brain-dead!” Kiara retorted irritably.
She wasn't sure if it was her imagination, but why did it seem to her that Yuzo Joel was so afraid of her becoming a donor? Then again, it wasn't strange when she thought about it; he treated her like his deceased daughter, and his stance was from a desire to protect her.
“Who's talking about you? Your compassionate heart has ironically faced so many situations that have forced you to become cold-hearted, leading to your Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder,” Yuzo Joel lamented, shaking his head. If Kiara hadn't encountered so many misfortunes, she would have grown into a very kind girl, outspoken and upright, with a sense of justice stronger than anyone else's. Yet, she insisted on believing she was bad; it was no wonder she developed Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.
“Aren't you the same? If you weren't so devoted, would you be so good to me? How come we have such similar temperaments? There are so many people in the world who lose a child, and most grieve within reasonable limits, but we ended up with psychological disorders that others don't get. In the end, being devoted is also a mistake.”
Child loss is a very small probability event, and it's hard for anyone who encounters such a thing, but within this small group of people, Kiara and Yuzo Joel's reactions are even rarer, suffering from severe psychological issues. Though their symptoms may seem different, at their core, they are the same; Kiara's Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Yuzo Joel's “transference” are similar kinds of psychological issues.
“What I find peculiar is your Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, which somehow feels related to a child, and yet this is your first pregnancy…”
Kiara was startled by Yuzo Joel's muttering, damn, he sensed the cause of her illness!
Dealing often with world-class authorities, even though Kiara tried hard to hide her medical history, Yuzo Joel was still able to see the problem; today's incident made him sense that something was off.
“Don't you go analyzing me, and don't apply the stuff you use on your patients outside to me!” Kiara protested too much.
“A lack of fatherly love from childhood leading you to compensate excessively for it in adulthood, to the next generation; when this love fails, it leads to psychological deviation, so the relationship between a father and a child might be the key to solving your Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.”
Yuzo Joel pretended not to hear Kiara's protest and accurately analyzed the situation.
“You'll end up with no friends like this…” Kiara felt incredibly self-conscious as he spoke; this guy was indeed formidable.
“Got one, come on, follow me~”
“Where to?”
“You'll know when we get there–go grab a coat to wear; it's windy outside, don't catch a cold.”
Kiara muttered as she looked for a coat to put on, following his nagging instructions. She thought to herself that it wasn't easy getting Camden busy with work and not bothering her, yet now Yuzo Joel had taken over Sebastian Tatum's nagging role.
But when Kiara arrived at the destination with Yuzo Joel, all her little grumbles about him disappeared.
“This is–?”
Yuzo Joel stopped the car, and Kiara looked out at the Maternal and Child Health Hospital sign speechlessly, “I just had a check-up not long ago, why are you bringing me here again?”
“Not for a check-up this time. Aren't you bored at home? I found you some work to do.”
Yuzo Joel led Kiara straight into the Dean's office, and the Dean stood up hastily upon seeing him.
He had already made a call ahead while on his way, so the Dean was very enthusiastic upon his arrival.
“Professor Joel, I really didn't expect you to come in person!”
“How's the thing I talked to you about going?” Yuzo Joel cut to the chase, and the Dean's eyes lit up with joy. Kiara had no idea what Yuzo Joel was up to and just listened in confusion.
“When you mentioned it, we were naturally thrilled to honor! Having such an opportunity is naturally good for a second-tier city like ours.”
Hearing their conversation, Kiara looked at Yuzo Joel with confusion; what opportunity?
“You'll find out soon.” Yuzo Joel winked at her.
