Reflecting on her experiences, Kiara sighed.
“We know so little about natural science nowadays. As the era progresses, what we consider scientific now might as well become the superstitious ignorance of the future. Before talking to Professor Joel, I couldn't even imagine that there were drugs capable of controlling human neurotransmitters, let alone that they could be effectively integrated with our specialty–what are you laughing at?”
“I'm laughing because you look so beautiful when you're happy. My daughter-in-law conceives a child, and everything she wishes for comes true. It's a series of fortunate events.”
“Isn't that the truth? I feel like our baby is truly blessed. Ever since her arrival, it seems like everything has been going smoothly.” Kiara, stroking her belly, felt a warm sensation in her heart. Ever since she became pregnant, her mood had been great. She didn't experience the common discomforts and depressions of pregnancy, feeling instead as if the arrival of the child had broadened her world.
Mario Yuno lovingly scraped her nose, “Look at you. Just a moment ago, you were saying that it's better to believe that these things exist, and now here you are speaking all these auspicious words.”
Kiara thought about it and realized he was right, but she was too proud to admit it, and with a haughty lift of her chin, she declared, “The words I'm saying aren't just auspicious phrases–they're facts! Everything goes smoothly with the child around. My baby is indeed a bundle of good fortune!”
Everyone balks at forwarding messages about misfortunes, but when it comes to good tidings like koi, they are always eager to hear them.
“Yeah, our Willa is doing great!”
Parents love to share positive remarks about their children, and although Kiara pretended not to hear him calling the baby Willa again, she found herself understanding her superstitious mother more. Her mother's intentions were good, but her actions were truly rooted in ignorance. And yet, her old beliefs had become so deeply ingrained over a lifetime that it was difficult to make her see reason or explain clearly to her.
By the time they returned, Kiara's mother had stopped mentioning the issue and seemed to be in better spirits, getting along wonderfully with Yuzo Joel. It appeared that he had performed some “treatment” on Kiara's mother while they were out, but the details of which only he would know.
After Yuzo Joel had left, Kiara asked her mother.
“Mum, why did you think Professor Joel looked familiar?”
“Ah? Did I say that? He doesn't look familiar at all; it was our first meeting.” Kiara's mother looked at her strangely, as if she had asked a peculiar question.
Kiara was about to continue, but her mother changed the subject, and the matter was dropped.
“By the way, who drew that charm for you – the mystic, Olivia Brown's master?” Kiara inquired.
“Not really. I asked for it, but Priest Jerry said you hadn't lost your soul and didn't need such a thing. He absolutely refused to draw it for me, so I had to find out you guys had someone who could and queued up to get it for you…”
Kiara remembered what Olivia had said while they were playing cards – although her teacher was a priestess, she was more open-minded than most, carrying an air of supernatural nonchalance, truly an enigmatic person.
At that moment, the enigmatic Sonya Cornelle was sitting in a high-end cafe in the busiest district of Linville, sipping a cappuccino, waiting for an old acquaintance to arrive.
The elegant Yuzo Joel entered the cafe and immediately spotted the still-charming Sonya Cornelle. She waved at him, and he walked straight over.
“Sisi, you're still so young.”
“The same goes for you, Kevin. You haven't aged a bit either.”
“How many years has it been since we've seen each other?”
“It's been over twenty years, I guess. Since that incident, we've been worlds apart. I never thought you would forgive me in this lifetime. Imagine my surprise when I received your call. It's an honor, truly,” Sonya Cornelle said to Yuzo Joel with a sense of wonder.
“Let's not talk about the past,” Yuzo Joel replied, his mood brightened by today's meeting with Kiara, unwilling to dredge up old memories.
“`
“Did you come to this city at this time because of that child?”
“Which one? I have no idea what you're talking about,” Yuzo Joel said as he picked up his cup, his eyes cast down inscrutably.
“Ah… Kevin, we grew up together since we were little, do we still have to keep secrets from each other even now?” Sonya Cornelle sighed, “Emma Clark, have you seen her already?”
Hearing Sonya Cornelle say this name, Yuzo Joel put down his teacup and looked at her expressionlessly.
His gaze made Sonya Cornelle very uncomfortable, as she thought back to the days when they used to run together under the trees.
Recalling a childhood of innocent companionship, where they played as equals without a thought to their separate futures.
“If you knew how important she was to me, why did you lie to me all those years ago that she had died? I used to think the only person I could trust in this life was you, but what did you do?”
These sharp words were like a blade piercing through Sonya Cornelle's heart, her well-defined hands tightly clutching the cup, her whitening fingers betraying her current emotions.
“Our experiment was against the natural order to begin with; it defies the laws of nature. Do you know the predicament it would put our four families in if word got out? If it were just a matter between you and me, of course I would stand by your side, but how can a person be so selfish? If I hadn't lied to you that she was already dead, you would have insistently stayed by her side, and if people discovered the experiment was a success, the child's peace and everyone's freedom would all be jeopardized. Sending her away was in accordance with the natural order.”
“Natural order? Hah, Sisi, all that mysticism you've been studying has gone to your head. I, Yuzo Joel, believe only in science and do not subscribe to any natural order. If I wish, then I am the natural order.”
“Regardless, now that I've found her, I will not let go. Anyone who wants to harm her will have to step over my dead body–including you,” Yuzo Joel said calmly as he looked at Sonya Cornelle.
Sonya Cornelle forced a bitter smile, “Do you even guard against me now?”
“Yes.”
Just one word was enough to demonstrate Yuzo Joel's resolve.
Sonya Cornelle let out a long sigh, “Well then. I suppose over these years you've gathered enough power to confront those people. Whatever I say now, you're not going to listen.”
“Yes.”
Neither of them spoke again. Sonya Cornelle sat across the table, gazing at Yuzo Joel, who was looking out the window where a few tall pine trees stood by the roadside, still bearing the white snow from earlier, standing tall and adding a touch of green to winter. They resembled the Kiara in his heart, who possessed the strength to turn difficulties into a wedding dress, stubbornly refusing to bow to hardships.
Sonya Cornelle watched him infatuatedly, as if time was especially kind to them both, the blade of the years seeming to cut them both more gently. But beneath the calm exterior, could there be a heart full of scars? The events of these many years created a barrier between them, making it impossible for the two once-trusting individuals to return to the past.
“Kevin, I'm going back to the mountain, If you ever need me in the future, you can come to find me.”
Yuzo Joel continued to look out the window without responding.
Sonya Cornelle waited a while before asking again.
“Don't you have anything to say to me?”
At this, Yuzo Joel turned his head, looking at her calmly.
“If time could flow backwards, would you make the same choice you did back then?”
