Chapter 1184 Visiting The Commander
After leaving the General Support Unit building where the now Special Unit was stationed, Izroth immediately made his way deeper into the command area. As he made his way through, Izroth noticed that the defenses became tighter and the checkpoints more frequent.
"You may pass." One of the War Brigade soldiers said after he confirmed Izroth's identity.
'This is already the third checkpoint. It seems that recent attacks has everyone on edge.'
The reason Izroth had to pay a visit to Aurie first was simple. Even with his achievements and newly acquired rank, it was not as if Izroth could just walk up to Nova's location. Even if one was a General or high ranking noble, it would still be virtually impossible to get close to Nova in her current state.
However, Aurie was Nova's adopted daughter. Additionally, Izroth was on good terms with Aurie. As such, if he wanted to visit Nova, his best chance was to go through Aurie.
'That being said, with Nova's status as one of the Seven Heroes and what she symbolizes for the Mortal Realm, there should be no lack of treasures and skilled individuals used to treat her. If she is still injured despite that, the wound is likely something that cannot be cured through standard treatment. I will have to see for myself what I'm dealing with.'
"Well, it's fine. Whatever the problem is, in the end, I just have to solve it." Izroth said to himself as he continued deeper into the heart of the camp.
A few moments later...
After going through several more checkpoints, Izroth finally arrived close to the center of the temporary command camp.
He walked toward one of the larger command tents, which was currently being guarded by two individuals—both of whom Izroth was familiar with.
"Hm? That's... Captain Izroth?" One of the individuals who stood before the command tent's entrance commented as he Izroth watched.
"He must have come to visit the Commander, but... I fear that now is not the best time." The other individual said with furrowed brows.
The one who spoke was the 1st Division Captain of the 1st Unit Edgar under Aurie's command, Edgar. As for the person who stood guard along with him, it was the 1st Division Captain of the 2nd Unit, Kalmesia.
At the moment, the expressions of the two Captains were not the greatest. Though the atmosphere around Kalmesia was several times worse than that of Edgar.
Izroth approached Edgar and Kalmesia as he cupped his fists into his hand.
"Captain Edgar, Captain Kalmesia—it's been a while since our paths have crossed." Izroth greeted.
"Captain Izroth. We're glad to see you safe and sound-" Edgar responded as his gaze traveled to the badge pinned to Izroth's arm.
Edgar's brows rose in surprise. He took a step forward and examined it closely as he almost though his eyes had betrayed him.
"This... It's a Commander's badge...! Captain Izroth, you-!" Edgar could not hide his shock as he stood back upright.
After suppressing his initial shock, Edgar quickly adjusted himself as he gave a respectful salute with his fist to his chest and said, "My apologies, Commander."
Kalmesia moved a step faster than Edgar as she, too, had already moved to salute Izroth properly.
"Congratulations on your promotion, Commander. I hope that you can pardon our delayed reception." Kalmesia stated calmly.
"Captain Edgar, Captain Kalmesia—we have fought on the same battlefield together. Commander Aurie has also always treated me and those under my command well. When it's just us, there is no need to stand on ceremony. Besides, I have been granted a special privilege by the the Head of the General Support Unit for all my efforts. I can assure you, I have not become the Head of the GSU itself." Izroth said with a carefree smile.
Even though his rank had risen to Commander, Izroth was still a member of the General Support Unit. In the eyes of the other War Branches, it was not something worthy of respect. Of course, this was excluding the Seraphina herself.
Despite this, Edgar and Kalmesia gave him a proper greeting. This displayed the level of respect they had for him and how they never looked down on the GSU. Though Izroth was not surprised considering that Aurie seemed to, at the very least, be on close terms with Seraphina.
After hearing Izroth's words, Edgar and Kalmesia relaxed. Under normal circumstances, the two might have voice a few concerns with treating a difference in rank so casually; however, due to the recent course of events, neither had the energy nor mind to bring it up.
"Then, we will do as you've suggested." Edgar said as he let out a small sigh.
He then asked, "Since you've come all the way here, I assume you are here to meet with the Commander?"
"That's right. There is something important that I have to discuss with her. The sooner the better since time may be of the essence." Izroth said in a straightforward manner.
When it came to serious injuries, Izroth knew that the longer they festered, the worse the situation would become. Therefore, he wanted to act as swiftly as possible.
There was a bit of hesitation on Edgar's face. From his expression alone, one could tell that if it were not Izroth making this request, he would have immediately sent them on their way.
As Edgar contemplated, a voice sounded abruptly, "Let him in, Edgar."
"?!" Edgar and Kalmesia seemed visibly shocked when they heard that voice as the two instinctively turned toward the command tent.
'That voice... Was it Commander Aurie?'
The voice that spoke just now originated from within the command tent.
While the voice sounded like Aurie, it lacked the usually authority and energy behind it. Additionally, there was a bit of raspy and harsh quality to it, as though it belonged to someone who had been awaken for days on end without rest.
Edgar returned his attention back toward Izroth and without saying a word, he stepped to the side and motioned with his hand for him to enter.
Izroth passed by Edgar as he walked forward. But, he suddenly halted his steps as he felt a hold on his arm.
There was a pleading and meaningful look in Edgar's eyes. Even without having said anything, Izroth could guess Edgar's intent.
Izroth did not utter a word and simply gave a small nod of assurance as Edgar let go of his arm.
The following moment, Izroth entered into the command tent.
Upon entering the command tent, Izroth was greeted by the sight of a standard command tent for someone of Aurie's standing, accompanied by a heavy and gloomy atmosphere.
The room itself was dimly lit, but still had just sufficient enough light for one to see everything inside. And, there seemed to be numerous documents piled up high on the table at it's center.
Izroth's eyes landed on the other side of the table near where the documents were piled up. It was there that he saw a person with their head rested on the table buried in their arms with hair that was slightly unkempt. This was person was, of course, Commander Aurie.
