The Treasure Chest and The Toolbox Part 1My father was a stuntman. My mother had been an obscure actress.
My father at first joined a theatrical company in hopes of becoming an actor, though he was completely unsuccessful. Instead he was highly appraised by a stuntman linked to the troupe during his time there and was eventually specialising in that field before he realised it.
My mother was said to have had the looks, but not the charm necessary to be an actress. She never got the large stage or TV roles she desired before marrying and having me.
My mother loved theatre. She loved the stage. She loved television. She loved tales.
Me joining an acting company was my mother's wish, and I remember making my acting debut without so much as a hint of unease.
I didn't dislike being a child actor. I got praise from everyone, and it was exciting being in front of all the spectators and cameras.
But nothing made me happier than my mother's delight.
"You did well, Haru-kun. That was amazing. You're way too good to be my child."
As she said that while hugging me, I would feel ecstatic like there was no role I couldn't play. Meanwhile my popularity steadily increased, and I became famous before I knew it.
Eventually a producer who wished to employ me proposed a plan to persuade my mother, who held decision-making power over my business activities.
"I've heard that you have experience acting as well, ma'am. Why not perform too, if you feel like it? We've already created a role for someone to be Sueharu-kun's mother, so what do you think?"
I would play the main character of the story, while my mother would die in a traffic accident in the first episode. Honestly speaking my mother had only a minor role. But this way she had the appearance in the 9 pm drama her heart had always desired.
My mother's joy knew no bounds.
Because everybody thought- it was going to be- an enthusiastic performance-
"Mom…?"
My mother's eyes never opened even after the call of "Cut" came. No matter how much we shook her or called out to her… from then on her eyes stayed forever closed eternally.
The cause of death was trauma to the head. The police investigated, but they determined that adequate safety measures had been in place, and the main cause of the blow to my mother's head had been her own overzealous acting.
If news of my mother's death on set became public, the drama itself would have been canned. When my father asked me what I wanted to do, I told him I wanted to see the drama Mom had so cherished through until the end.
With the agency's acknowledgement, in the end my father requested the police and TV station keep everything under wraps, treating my mother's death as a routine accident. My mother's death was self-inflicted; that by itself certainly wasn't a lie.
Filming continued as planned thanks to the control of information and wrapped up. My mother's cherished drama got the green light to be broadcast and set records for viewership.
Yet after filming concluded, I lost all ability to summon motivation. Or perhaps I fell ill when the time came for me to start on my next job, leaving me unable to act at all.
My father decided and convinced the Agency to let me go on an indefinite sabbatical, and thus I kept far away from the acting world.
Since then for six years - my period of convalescence continued.
