Chapter 1101: Chapter 1101 The First Battle Chapter 1101: Chapter 1101 The First Battle As players eagerly eyed the distant, small fortress, the scout's report rang in everyone's ears.
“Before us stands a small fortress guarded by a low-tier Iron Lord. Surveillance has revealed that the Lord is a fifth-tier race-level leader, assisted by three high-rank sub-heroes. His forces are made up of a low-tier Iron Legion. The number of defenders is estimated to be around one hundred thousand.”
Hearing that the fortress had only one hundred thousand defenders, the players grew even more excited. They had no fewer than one hundred thousand players alone this time, not to mention each player commanded at least one hundred troops. This meant their forces were ten times that of the defenders, making capturing this location seemingly effortless. The real question was merely the method of attack.
“Heh, the Iron Legion isn't so easily defeated. If they could be eradicated that easily, the Iron Alliance wouldn't have contended with the undead army for thousands of years,” the Undead Catastrophe sneered.
Jasmine also remarked, “I hope we go into action later.”
“We don't have much choice in the matter. When we don't have independent actions, we must follow commands. It also depends on the tactics of the commanding general this time. Thankfully, our general is a High Elf, which should be fine. If it were an Undead General, it would be terrible,” the Undead Catastrophe sighed continuously.
“I, on the other hand, hope to have a go. Traveling like this is so boring,” the main tank in the team said, filled with anticipation.
Li Yao asked, “Is an Undead General not good? I hear they are known for their calmness, almost always victorious in battle and invincible in attack, highly famous in the Dark Camp.”
Wangyu laughed and said, “Hey, that's not a bad point. But what you call 'calm' is actually ruthlessness. They do not treat their men as human beings and are unscrupulous for victory. Brother, you don't know this, but last time we followed a Death Knight General, and we almost got completely wiped out. If it weren't for some strategies to replenish our troops, we would probably have ended up shirtless and scrambling for military merits like those defending the city.”
The team's female Mage chuckled, “Who doesn't know you, Boss Wangyu, are a rich second generation? Talking about us going shirtless is one thing, but you never lack money. You can easily buy a good legion with just a bit of spending.”
“Less nagging, you chatterbox, even after getting married. Liangzi, you don't manage her at all,” Wangyu joked and continued, “Besides, playing games is all about development. If you can reach your goals just by spending money, why even play?”
Li Yao gave a thumbs up. It was indeed rare for wealthy people nowadays to use their financial advantage sensibly and still maintain such a mindset.
“Team of ten thousand, by the General's orders, your ten-thousand-man brigade is responsible for the wall on the left side of the fortress. Move to the front immediately, without error,” a messenger told Wangyu.
“Understood.” Though reluctant, Wangyu had no choice but to accept the order, “This time you get your wish. Remember to be smart later. If we suffer too many casualties, our chances to go solo could disappear.”
Everyone solemnly acknowledged and then proceeded to the front.
Li Yao observed the empty battlefield, clearly filled with players. The NPC army's intent was obvious: to conserve their strength.
Next, the players who received orders summoned their legions. Li Yao looked around, noting a disorderly mix of low-rank troops–undead, hellish troops, elemental troops, and more, a complete mishmash, including within individual teams. Li Yao shook his head slightly.
It was well-known in legion battles that cohesion was key; troops of the same race and type in significant numbers were not only visually appealing but also facilitated coordination.
Combining different troop types on the battlefield, where many inherently opposed each other, lacked cooperation, and did not form large-scale units, inherently started at a disadvantage.
Fortunately, the general in command understood this, deploying brigades of ten thousand to facilitate coordination and segregating inherently hostile and countering troop types.
“This general is quite impressive,” Li Yao acknowledged. “Taking down this fortress should be feasible. However, brothers, try to minimize casualties later. Don't recklessly charge forward for military glory. The Iron Legion's initial firepower will likely be fierce; let the cannon fodder absorb the first wave of attacks.”
“Brother, you really know what you're doing,” Jasmine said, giving a thumbs up before adding, “Send up the lowest thousand unranked Earth Elements.”
The team was excellent. Half of the people commanded lower-tier Elemental Legions, while the other half was a mix, mostly consisting of lower-tier Undead.
Seeing that Li Yao was also summoning his forces, the Undead commented, “Brother's forces may be few, but they are all elite. Let's wait for a critical moment to deploy them.”
“It's fine, I'm just playing around. Even if they get wiped out, it doesn't matter, right? You guys wouldn't leave me out just because my army's gone, would you?” Li Yao retorted.
“How could we? Brother, you really are straightforward,” the young woman said with a smile, and everyone else looked at Li Yao with much warmer eyes than before.
Decisively, Li Yao placed 50 Ghost Spiders in the second echelon; this was the tank legion following the cannon fodder units. Next in line were the ranged Poison Spiders and other ranged Ghosts.
Despite their lesser numbers, the people in the fortress were no less intense in spirit than theirs. Their vigors seemed linked together, complemented by the chilling presence of the Iron Legion, making the scene even more daunting.
Li Yao also sized up the Steel Fort. Although the fort was made of rock, some magic had rendered it akin to a steel bulwark, aligning with the strategic formation on the ground.
Many dark openings appeared in the opposing fortress, followed by the emergence of large artillery barrels, and the walls were manned with various Battle Puppets and Mechanical Monsters.
And many Gatling-like devices were set up along the city walls.
“The general commands, attack the city, today if a team of ten thousand captures the forefront of the fort, they'll be credited with a major contribution, each team earning three thousand military merits, and the first team to hold a segment of the wall will have their combat merits doubled.”
Following the officer's command, the people at the forefront went crazy. The rewards were too substantial; military merits were a solid currency. Aside from personal killing merits, there was this generous reward. Suddenly, the players who had grievances were revitalized, even Wangyu's eyes turned red, clearly tempted.
“Attack!”
A thunderous battle cry erupted, and the cannon fodder legion surged forward like a tidal wave.
The cannon ports on the city walls dazzled in an instant, resembling small suns. Artillery shells streaked across the sky with trails of fire like shooting stars, beautifully tracing their path to the battlefield.
The Mechanical Legion, already formidable, was even more potent in defense, and their mechanical power significantly magnified by defensive fortifications.
Accompanied by bursts of bright flames, a large amount of cannon fodder exploded into pieces.
Li Yao watched in distress, ruefully thinking that collecting the scattered corpses would be challenging.
“It's time now, second echelon, charge!” the Undead bellowed, as he and the close-combat second echelon surged forward.
Meanwhile, the line here was not idle either; although the Undead Army had not yet moved, they had coordinated Blade Cars and Stone throwers to jointly attack…
