Chapter 1100: Chapter 1100: Entering Chapter 1100: Chapter 1100: Entering Upon entering the fortress, Li Yao and his companions split from the supply team, and with the alarm sounding, the players within the fortress instantly erupted into action.
Then, two messengers ran up to the high platforms in the Fortress Plaza.
“Undead are attacking from outside again. We are now recruiting armies proficient in raids to resolve the threat outside. Those who wish to fight, sign up quickly.”
In both camps, a herald appeared and began announcing the order, after which players crowded in a frenzy to sign up, with Li Yao and his group unable to push through the throng.
“Is all this excitement really necessary?” Li Yao and a few close-combat teammates formed a perimeter on the outskirts of the crowd, preventing other players from scattering them, with another task being to protect the female players in their team, ensuring they weren't taken advantage of in the chaos. After all, in such a tumult, physical contact wouldn't be penalized.
“Heh heh, buddy, it's your first time on a war map and you're not aware of the situation. Many people don't want to venture out, but they do want to earn troops, so they wait in the fortress. Then, when an attack comes from outside, they join the mass for military exploits and exchange their accrued military merits for troops,” explained Undead Catastrophe.
“Does the fortress have enough legions available for exchange?” Li Yao asked.
“Heh, of course, there are plenty. This war mode has several play styles too. One is to follow the army and defend the fortress, with ninety percent going to the army, mainly for earning military merits to exchange. The second is pioneering with the army, which is to venture into the Dead Light Area, with captured army players and the army splitting the spoils evenly. The third is for players to act on their own; if they capture an army, the army takes a ten percent cut. Just think, with so many players, that's a lot of troops to accumulate, definitely enough for players to exchange,” explained Undead Catastrophe.
“Which kind are we?” Li Yao asked.
“We're going to follow the army out, then look for a chance to act on our own,” Jasmine explained.
“Come on, let's move to the side and enjoy the show,” Li Yao said.
Li Yao's group left the plaza and went to see the quartermaster for a list of exchangeable troop types.
Li Yao saw that there were many exchangeable troop types, mainly various undead.
Of course, they were mostly low-level skeletons, abominations, and low-rank ghosts or blood servants. There were also elite goblin eaters, abominations, skeleton mages, and bloodline descendants, as well as ordinary ghosts immune to physical damage, but all required a significant amount of military merits. Clearly, earning genuine military exploits wasn't so easy.
Li Yao discovered that these exchangeable troop types were mostly low-tier undead that lacked intelligence; he didn't see any intelligent ones. Obviously, the queen was silently bolstering the power of the undead, just as she had said.
For the intelligent undead, she could summon as many as she wished; however, this meant nothing for the Undead Clan as a whole. Li Yao grimaced; no wonder the fortress was so generous. Even if the captured undead were insufficient, just a few dragon witch monsters and those researching undead magic could summon or create a large number of these low-tier undead species.
While pondering the queen's plans, Li Yao watched the livestream that Jasmine had shared with the team, which was actually the battle outside the fortress.
Aside from the army, the players had no right to access the ramparts, so they could only watch the situation outside through the livestream.
The assailants were undead, and Li Yao saw that the entity commanding over a hundred thousand low-tier undead was a race-level chieftain, a dragon witch monster floating midair. His troops consisted mainly of cannon fodder legions, that is, low-tier undead. They surged out of the gorge in swarms, moving onto the plains before the fortress.
As the horns sounded, the gates flew open and the armies of both camps, along with a plethora of players, charged out of the fortress.
“Pff, so this is what they call earning military exploits, huh? Impressive, impressive.”
Li Yao realized that these players hadn't summoned any followers and were, instead, joining the military ranks as cannon fodder to charge into battle.
“What else could it be? Sending out their own legions would probably lead to their depletion after a few battles, a loss far outweighing any gain. Of course, some are trying to make a comeback using this method after their entire forces were wiped out in the wilderness,” laughed Undead Catastrophe.
“True, dying allows you to respawn at the resurrection point, but at least killing a few nets you some military credits,” Li Yao shook his head slightly.
The great battle didn't last long, less than an hour, and the Dark Camp's hundred thousand undead were defeated, the Dragon Witch Monster attempted to flee with serious injuries, the Undead Clan wanted to capture her, while the Light Faction's experts directly slew the witch.
The Undead Clan cursed, knowing that killing the witch was meaningless since her life essence was in her phylactery.
Both sides argued for a while but didn't come to blows, then returned to the fortress with their captives.
The players fought desperately, and with the regular army, they captured over fifty thousand of the hundred thousand undead.
Li Yao noticed that amongst these, the Dark Camp had captured tens of thousands of the more intelligent undead and separated them from the cannon fodder, then loaded them into sealed wagons. Li Yao finally understood what those closed wagons in the fortress were for.
Then a voice that echoed throughout the fortress announced, “Scout report: No undead or Iron Legion within a hundred and fifty thousand yards deep into the canyon, we can launch an attack. New recruits who want to follow the team into the Dead Light Area, gather outside the fortress. Commanders with a minimum of a hundred followers allowed to leave the fortress, those without sufficient strength may not go.”
Li Yao knew that different war maps had different requirements based on the level of danger.
“Let's go, brother, we're setting off,” said the Undead Catastrophe.
Li Yao nodded and followed the team. He noticed that there were quite a few groups heading out of the city; it seemed that in just under a month, many players had gained substantial strength.
It was almost another hour before it was Li Yao's team's turn. Guarding the city gate was a Dark Ranger.
“Teams of ten, with a minimum requirement of a thousand followers. Show your strength, as it relates to your temporary status.”
King Catastrophe and a few others each handed over their war space to the ranger, and Li Yao also gave over the lowest grade war space he had purchased.
This was because Li Yao, for the sake of appearances, specifically recruited a hundred and fifty elite magic spiders with scrolls.
“Here is your token, take care of it.” The Dark Ranger nodded and gave a token to the Undead Catastrophe.
Li Yao took a glance and was shocked to see that it was actually a temporary token of a commander over ten thousand, realizing the team he had randomly joined was indeed extraordinary, with each member commanding over a thousand troops on average, which was definitely not weak at this stage.
He had intended to keep a low profile, but it seemed he might have overdone it.
“Over a hundred elite magic spiders, not bad, dude. They can be our trump card,” laughed the Undead Catastrophe. The other members of the team also smiled amiably, not looking down on Li Yao for having fewer troops, which clearly showed the team's harmony.
Then came the grand procession, and Li Yao saw that each faction's regular army had about ten thousand troops, but the players were at least over a hundred thousand, an army size that was not insubstantial, even for cannon fodder legions.
“Now that you've joined the team, you must follow military command. Disobedience will result in elimination; confront the enemy in turns, following orders,” they were instructed.
The players basically all had mounts, though of varying quality, their speed was not slow.
The column safely burst out of the canyon and entered the Dead Light Area, then the two factions' troops split off and half an hour later, a small fortress appeared before everyone's eyes…
