Chapter 15: Celebration

A simplified stove was set up using a few pieces of stones. The big metal pot that Niu Xu bought was set above it and Kui’s wife, Cai, was placing firewood into the stove from time to time.　　

Slightly further away from them, a group of housewives observed the mysterious large metal pot and clicked their tongue in admiration. They were burning with eagerness and if it wasn’t for Cai’s identity as tribe leader Kui’s wife, they would have dragged her away from the stove and tried it for themselves.

When the water started to boil, several clean palm-sized meat chunks were added into the pot and after which, they were supplemented by adding in several colorful unknown fruits. The 5 kg plus of food filled the pot to the brim.

What surprised them was that after a bit of effort, a rich fragrance wafted throughout the village by using such an bold and unconstrained way of cooking. This caused the dazed Niu Xu to think that the taste should be not bad.

From the position of the sun in the sky, the time now should be around 2 pm. So as to fervently celebrate the friendship between Black Rock tribe and the forthright youth Niu Xu, Kui wave his right hand and did a what he think was bold and resolute decision: We must have a good celebration.

The celebration style combined both breakfast and lunch to let the whole tribe have a filling meal. It was at this time did Niu Xu know from them that sourcing for food wasn’t easy. Under normal conditions, all the tribes in Luo Lei mountain region only ate 2 meals per day.

When food was scarce, they would only have 1 meal per day. Or when the winter season came, not eating for a whole day was not uncommon. This was why there were no elderly in Black Rock tribe.

Another reason was that once they encountered a longer winter season, the elderly in the tribe would refuse to eat when there were not enough food in the storage.

This might sound cruel but if every single tribe within the Luo Lei mountain region wanted to survive, this was the choice that they must made. Within Luo Lei mountain region, even large tribes like Large Rock was like this, what more a small tribe such as Black Rock.

As for eating 3 times a day, only a few big characters within the few large tribes in Luo Lei mountain region were able to enjoy this type of privilege. They were for example, tribe leaders, senior elders and important shamans.

Hence, Kui’s decision to combine both breakfast and lunch to welcome Niu Xu was simply full of sincerity…

After subtracting off a few hundred tribe hunters, the total number of elderly, children, women and a few guard warriors added up to around 200. This was to say that the total population of Black Rock tribe does not exceed 400.

Naturally, the food in the large pot was impossible to fill everyone’s stomach, so several housewives have made quite a few roasted meat and took out various wild berries that Niu Xu had never seen before. Looking at the faces of Black Rock tribe’s members that were brimming with genuine smiles, Niu Xu thought of the New Year celebration in the legends. 

After busying themselves until around 3 pm, the preparation for all the food was finished. Without calling for them, all of Black rock tribe’s members actively held their stone or wooden bowls and lined up in front of the large pot, waiting for someone to distribute the food.

As Black Rock tribe’s honorable guest, Niu Xu once again enjoyed the privilege. Cai used a wooden ladle to churn the soup and directly gave Niu Xu a large portion of food. When the blackish wooden pot was filled to the brim, its weight was at least above 2.5 kg.

What’s important was the food in the pot, other than a few berries, several chunks of fatty meat that were especially chosen by Cai were inside. Without a doubt, the mouth would be filled with oil water upon biting down.

However, Niu Xu felt that recently, even if his food was filled with oil water, the large pot of fatty meat still exceeded the amount of capacity that his poor stomach could hold.

There were no so called ‘welcome speeches’ or any wine to accompany the food, even a stool could not be seen. After Cai and the few housewives finished distributing the food, the Black Rock tribe’s members conveniently squatted on the ground and made slurping sounds when eating.

“Brother Niu Xu, why are you not eating! The food is so delicious after adding in the white salt, there are no traces of bitterness,” Kui said while holding onto a wooden pot that was of similar size to Niu Xu’s.

With a face of enjoyment, this hunk lowered his head and sucked in a large amount from the wooden pot. Instantly, half of the food in the wooden pot disappeared.

Enduring the slight nausea in his stomach, Niu Xu forcefully bit out a small mouthful of fatty meat. Contrary to his expectations, the taste was miraculously delicious. The long starving youth buried his head and ate his meal.

After consuming the food, Niu Xu did not feel the large amount of energy contained in it like large boar’s leg. However, as compared to the ridiculously expensive meat that were sold in the Bao Qing city’s black market, the taste was much more enriching and the amount of nutrients in it was worlds apart.

‘Actually, even if I cannot find any precious stones or gold in this era, I could always get some normal beasts meat back home. It would definitely sell at a good price.’ Niu Xu thought as he ate without restraints.

Under the shine of the resplendent light rays from the sun, a few hundred of people squatted in the middle of the village while eating the food that was hard to come by, with slurping sounds. Every one of their faces reflected a smile of satisfaction, making everything seemed so beautiful…

Although it looked simple, but to Black Rock tribe, once the seemingly significant celebration ended, all the members of Black Rock tribe gazed at Niu Xu with a sense of closeness.

In their knowledge, other than those closest to them, they would not share their hard sought food no matter what. Seeing that the pot was still on the simplified stove, Niu Xu let someone to clean it and after that, he boiled a large pot of water again.

Next, he brought out the jasmine tea leaves that he got as a lucky draw for spending $38 at the supermarket and boiled all of it in the pot. In the eyes of the masses, the pot was emitting out an enchanting jasmine smell. This was their drink after the meal.

Taking small sips of the boiling hot tea, Niu Xu and Kui started to chat.

Since he agreed to aid the Black Rock tribe, Niu Xu felt that he must understand the fundamental situation in the primordial era. Only when he clearly knew what sort of trouble were they facing, could he come up with better plan to organize what sort of resources to bring to deal with this problem.

Kui copied Niu Xu’s actions and sip the tea. At the same time, under Niu Xu’s skillful inquiring, Kui slowly started to explain.
