Chapter 1038: Chapter 1040: Bearman_1 Chapter 1038: Chapter 1040: Bearman_1 Song Jian had completed his epic task at the fortress, and the City of Hope had not descended into chaos because of his absence. In fact, Wang Qi and others had grown accustomed to Song Jian's frequent absences from the City of Hope, and everything proceeded in an orderly fashion even when he was not there.
Negotiations with the City of Sin continued, Abyssal Shadow replicas were purchased or destroyed as needed, and following the system announcement, players who had first seized these replicas understood that they would become worthless bridgeheads for the Abyssal Hell's invasion of the game world. Even if the people of the City of Hope didn't buy them out, they would eventually be forced to destroy them all, so naturally, they were all too happy to make one last profit from them.
However, there were still some replica holders who couldn't be contacted, and their replicas had yet to be destroyed. Wang Qi had already arranged for staff to reach out to these players, determined to have all replicas in the vicinity of the City of Hope destroyed before the Abyssal invasion.
As Song Jian went deeper into the castle to explore, the Transmission Array in the City of Hope summoned the figures of three NPCs. Their arrival immediately attracted the attention of nearby players.
These three, dressed in black robes holding Magic Staffs and slender in build, seemed shrouded within their voluminous cloaks. Most significantly, a faint black aura wafted from them, from inside out.
Having recently faced a Necromancer invasion, the City of Hope was incredibly vigilant about any anomalies. The players around eyed the trio warily the moment they appeared, with some immediately gripping their weapons. If not for the friendly green names above the NPCs' heads, they might have been under attack the moment they appeared.
“So this is the City of Hope, huh? It really is a city that has just been established. What bad luck to be facing such a disaster so soon,” said Sora, lowering his hood to reveal a handsome face with pointed ears, pale skin, and curious, wide eyes that looked around eagerly, appearing much like a legendary Elf.
“Such a city will never withstand the Abyssal catastrophe. Our Oracle City is by far the safest place in the entire world,” another NPC, resembling a Goblin, said dismissively as he looked around.
“It's also not as prosperous as Oracle City, after all, it is a newly established city, so we shouldn't be too harsh…” The last NPC, with the appearance of a Beastman, scrutinizing the slowly gathering citizens of the City of Hope, couldn't help but curl the corner of his mouth in disdain.
“Even the city's response mechanism is flawed. We have been here for over ten minutes and still no one has come to inquire. Either the guards here are lazy, or the city has not established any crisis response mechanism at all, which is truly terrifying!” Sora sighed, feeling increasingly doubtful that the city would survive when the great disaster struck.
“Heh, isn't that exactly why we are here?” the Goblin Milu revealed a sly smile, “As long as we make an impressive case and throw in a little sweetener, I believe our mission will go very smoothly.”
“Let's hope so, for the gods are watching us!” The Beastman Nar crossed his hands reverently over his chest and spoke with a respectful tilt of his head.
The three strolled leisurely through the streets of the City of Hope, visiting every shop as if to understand the situation of the city, though their destination was clear–the imposing City Lord Mansion at the city's center, which was Song Jian's Manor Castle.
…
Walking cautiously along the castle's passageway, Song Jian found it strange not to have encountered a single creature after such a long journey.
But soon, he heard a deep growling and panting ahead, as if a beast awaited him.
Reaching the end of the passageway, Song Jian found an open door leading to what appeared to be a dining room, with a huge table set in the center and only one chair beside it. Seated there was an unusually robust bearman enjoying a hearty meal.
This bearman had the torso and limbs of a human but the head of a great black bear and a body covered in thick black fur, looking much like a black bear capable of upright walking.
“Level 58 Dominant-class BOSS, Bruke Bearman,” Song Jian narrowed his eyes as he examined the creature's attributes: “It's also a mutated creature!”
“Bruke Bearman (Mutated), Level 58, Dominant-class BOSS, Vitality Points: 1350000/1350000”
The bearman roared loudly and directly lifted the gigantic dining table with a diameter of over five meters, sending it flying towards Song Jian along with the food atop it, heralding its approach with a whistling whoosh through the air.
Song Jian leaped aside. It was only then, as the Bruin bearman rose from his chair, that Song Jian realized just how tall the bearman before him was–it had already surpassed five meters. Its body was covered in bulging muscles, imposing a fearsome presence, much like a moving fortress, which was quite horrifying to behold.
“Roar! Invader, die!” The bearman let out a thunderous bellow as a bloody light began to emanate from its body. Its already towering stature grew even more, its head nearly reaching the ceiling of the dining room.
With heavy strides, it charged toward Song Jian, picking up the overturned dining table along the way and hurling it at him.
Wielding the Sky-breaking Sword, Song Jian cleaved the enormous table in two. Just then, a shadow loomed over him. A look of surprise crossed his face; he hadn't expected the bearman, as massive and heavy as it was, to move so nimbly.
Before he could react, the bearman collided with him like a small mountain;
Bang!
Song Jian felt as though he'd been struck by a speeding locomotive. He was sent flying, crashing hard against the wall a few meters behind him.
Instantly, the wall, built of giant rocks, caved in, leaving a person-shaped indentation. Song Jian felt as if all the bones in his body might break.
“This guy is so strong!” Song Jian couldn't help but spit out a mouthful of blood, terror apparent on his face.
“Dark heavy strike!” The bearman roared and swung its right fist toward Song Jian. Its fist glowed with a black light, condensing into a massive bear's head that emitted a deep, howling sound.
Song Jian's face turned ashen, and in the blink of an eye, his figure vanished, becoming translucent like a soul, and he passed straight through the wall!
Soul Wander, Song Jian's most powerful movement and evasion skill. In his soul form, he was immune to all attacks except those aimed at the soul. In the first three seconds after casting, he could pass through any obstacles. The skill lasted for nine seconds, enough time for Song Jian to dodge any fatal damage.
Boom!
The sturdy rock wall exploded apart, and a large hole appeared in front of Song Jian. Large chunks of rock shot past him, some even piercing through his body and crashing behind him.
Azure Dragon Sword Body, Withering Power!
A dazzling cyan light burst forth from Song Jian's body. He lifted his hand, and the Withering Power coiled like a rope in the air, twisting and binding the bearman. Instantly, the bearman's speed was greatly reduced, as if it had become as sluggish as a snail.
Song Jian breathed a sigh of relief. The oppressive aura exuded by this BOSS was too intense, its attacks came like a sudden squall, leaving no room to breathe. From the first glance to the present moment, Song Jian had not even been able to utilize the Thousand Swords Art, constantly suppressed by the opponent. Without the Soul Wander skill, he likely would have been severely injured by now, teetering on the brink of death.
