Chapter 966: Chapter 537: It Seems Like He Treats Us as His Own People Chapter 966: Chapter 537: It Seems Like He Treats Us as His Own People Water God Tom had been lying motionless in the Void since Ange gave him two Divine Realm's worth of pure water, only moving his consciousness when summoned by Ange.
Spending a long time in the Void, he couldn't just lie there motionless, he had to work, so the task of breeding fell on Tom.
Remember the planting ball? With silk cloth and glue, Durken had already replicated several and made improvements, achieving a degree of automation in its operations that greatly reduced the workload.
For example, the planting ball now featured an automatic seeding function it previously lacked. Seeds poured into the inlet would roll into the trough by themselves, and by rotating the trough's position, they could be sown in place, which was very convenient.
Other features included automatic fertilization, cyclic harvesting, precise temperature control, air circulation, and so on.
Under Ange's guidance, with his level as the King of Alchemy, Durken brought a brand-new design to near-perfect levels of improvement. Such a planting ball only required one or two people to continuously produce fresh vegetables sufficient for the daily needs of one to two hundred people.
The planting ball was originally developed for Void farming. If the Sorcerer Alliance knew that such a device had improved to the point of being worth promoting, they would go crazy.
The biggest problem for the Sorcerer Alliance was the lack of planting space, making their vegetables ridiculously expensive. Their staple food was some kind of gel strip, which, though filling, would cause internal heat if eaten in excess and was not plant-based but processed from various animal parts like meat, fat, skin, and scales.
Thus, the Sorcerer Alliance was in extreme need of vegetables. Grains, with longer shelf lives, could be bought from the surface, but they could only consume dried vegetables.
They sought any means to purchase fresh vegetables, even willing to price them in Demon Crystals. If they could farm in the Void, they would pay a great price.
Now, this improved planting ball was mounted on the top of the ladder in the sky, making it look as if another ball had been added atop an umbrella, with Tom floating nearby, occasionally managing it.
This highly automated planting ball didn't require much effort, and Tom loitered like a doorman's grandfather until Ange came over. Tom perked up, saying, “Oh, Lord, what brings you here? Are you here to see the Seedlings? They're growing quite well.”
Ange nodded and flew into the planting ball.
Negris took a deep breath and also flew out from the ladder, quickly entering the planting ball.
A clump of pure water floating in the planting ball changed shape a few times, taking on the form of Tom. The boss was inspecting, so it was time to show off–otherwise, if Military Advisor Dragon Head made some slanderous comments, Lord might deduct his pure water.
Negris hadn't managed to slander because the first thing that stunned it was a pumpkin larger than itself: “This… is this a pumpkin?”
Then came a winter melon taller than a person, a cluster of fast-growing lettuce large enough to serve as a nest… Everywhere you looked, almost all the vegetables and fruits were exceptionally large, as though they had been given a Giant Potion.
“How… can they be so thick? So big? What have you done?” Negris asked in disbelief.
Initially, when Ange said he wanted to breed in the Void, Negris wondered why. What advantages did the Void have? There was no water, no air.
Of course, now with the planting ball and Water God Tom, issues with air and water were resolved; otherwise, they could only plant on a small scale in the Sorcerer's ladder, which wasn't as effective as Ange's expedited growth in the space.
Ange shook his head: “Didn't do much.”
With Ange's way of speaking, it was strange to get any details out of him. Although Negris was a qualified translator, knowledge couldn't be guessed at, so he had to look to Tom for more information.
Tom spread his hands: “I didn't do much. Just followed the Lord's orders, sowed the seeds, watered them on time, oh, and pinched off those that were growing small or slow.”
“Just like that?” Negris could hardly believe that just this would suffice to cultivate such gigantic vegetables and fruits. It was skeptical.
Seeing that there was nothing more to learn from Tom, Negris turned again to Ange with determination, resolved to get to the bottom of it today, even if Ange spoke one word at a time.
“No gravity, saves effort, growth, mutation, large scale, select the best for breeding,” Ange spat out word by word, laboriously explaining.
If it had been the Negris that had just met Ange, it probably wouldn't understand such a brief introduction, but now its knowledge of cultivation had improved. Quite frankly, it was one of the top four or five in planting knowledge, second only to Ange.
Numbers two and three were Little Sapling and the God of Life, beyond comparison…
“Do you mean to say that in the Void there is no gravity, so plants save energy in their growth, don't need to produce things like lignin, and then during their growth they mutate, and you just select those that are enlarged, grow quickly, and taste good for seed retention?” Negris attempted to translate.
Ange nodded incessantly.
All right, Negris understood. This was actually the most conventional way of breeding, by altering the environment to suit new conditions and selecting seeds for optimization over generations, hoping for some beneficial mutations in the process.
However, what constitutes an 'appropriate' change? Plants are delicate things; a temperature drop by one or two degrees and they won't germinate, increase by three to five degrees, and they'll die off. Humidity, sunlight–not enough of either, and they underproduce.
