Chapter 1430: Chapter 991: Reminded Him of Bait Used for Fishing
Feiodor initially didn't perceive any issues because Light Point Fortress had briefly extinguished before but then lit up again overnight. Everyone unanimously believed it was likely that the Light Point Fortress was simply tired and took a rest.
He thought this time it was for the same reason and that it would light up again after a night, so Feiodor kept flying towards the last location where the light had disappeared.
However, a night passed, and the light did not reignite; a day passed, and still the light remained off, Feiodor started to panic. Another day and night passed without the light reigniting, and Feiodor had no choice but to stop.
If Light Point Fortress had continued moving during those two days and two nights, it would have traveled a great distance. If they kept heading to the original point only to find nothing, they would also miss the Light Point Fortress.
By the time they returned to the Divine Light Alliance and set out again, Light Point Fortress might have already left the Boundless Space Hole and entered the vast Void.
In the emptiness of the Boundless Space Hole, Light Point Fortress was very conspicuous, but once it left, it could easily hide in any Plane or ruin, like Land of Shattering or Divine Light Graveyard. By then, finding it would be difficult.
Stopping in a patch of the Void, Feiodor shouted out loud with his soul energy: “Take a break, deploy the Communication Array, I need to communicate with the council.”
About thirty Mourning Undead Soldiers halted, each took out a Soul Crystal and held it in their hand. The soul energy of the Soul Crystals was activated, rising gently from their palms and was then inhaled through their nostrils.
From this detail, it could be seen that they were indeed skeletons clad in Necromancer flesh because only skeletons would use their eye sockets and noses to consume soul energy. If they were Necromancers, they would typically press the soul energy to their heart, not inhale it through their noses.
While absorbing the Soul Crystals, the flesh of these Mourning Undead Soldiers also began to shrink slowly, quickly reverting to their wrinkled zombie appearance.
Feiodor didn't know what was happening, only that when they sped up in the Void, their flesh would expand as if it had been soaked.
Two Mourning Undead Soldiers opened up space ornaments, taking out several stone slabs and then assembling them together into a Teleportation Array. The two Undead Soldiers supported the Array, secured it, and then activated it.
Though it was a Teleportation Array, only the Communication Array on top was used. They were flying too far; they could only communicate with the rear through the Teleportation Array, fearing that if they went any further, even the Teleportation Array would lose contact.
There are many obstacles in the world, but often the sheer distance alone can drive one to despair. The Boundless Space Hole was a place of such distant despair that nothing emerging from there could be underestimated.
Once the Teleportation Array was activated, they quickly made contact with the rear. Chairman Joseph's voice came through the Array, sounding as if he had been waiting there all along: “Oh Feiodor, why are you contacting us only now? The Light Point Fortress disappeared, what's going on? Did it detect you, or did you succeed?”
Feiodor was puzzled: “What are you talking about? We haven't arrived yet. Detected us? How could that be? We don't emit any light.”
In the pitch-black Void, it's almost impossible to detect an object without fluctuations. Even Ange's Ring of Balance measures the undulations of surrounding space to detect possible objects nearby, but what those objects are can only be determined once they enter Ange's field of vision.
From such a distance, if the Light Point Fortress could detect them, there would be no need to fight this battle; they might as well just run away.
What everyone did not expect was that Joseph's speculation was correct–the Light Point Fortress indeed discovered them, just not in the way they thought.
Joseph clearly wasn't just asking about the situation, upon hearing 'hasn't arrived yet,' he said somewhat angrily: “Then why didn't you contact the council earlier? We've been waiting here for two days, can you bear the responsibility if we lose the Light Point Fortress?”
“Joseph, don't make a fuss, Feiodor is the legion commander, he has the authority to decide when to report,” another voice angrily interrupted Joseph's questioning.
Joseph said indifferently, “Chairman Leo, is this something that a front-line legion commander can decide? The Light Point Fortress is of great significance; it's the only thing to come from the Boundless Space Hole. If we lose it, no one can afford that responsibility. What if it brings a plague or war? What if an unprecedented epidemic infects us? Are you going to take responsibility for the dead?”
“Damn it, don't twist my words!” Leo snapped, “Feiodor decides when to contact the council, not the disappearance of the Light Point Fortress, they haven't even found the fortress yet, so it's not their responsibility. If you continue this nonsensical interference, I will initiate a motion to remove you from your chairman position.”
“I'd motion first, you've invaded the Friel Empire causing massive losses to the elite of the Alliance, turning the Friel Empire into an enemy of the Alliance, we're all implicated by your actions, losing all business with the Friel Empire, I'll initiate a motion to impeach you,” Joseph retorted furiously.
The two chairmen started arguing right there at the Teleportation Array.
Feiodor helplessly shook his head; the internal strife within the Alliance had reached a fever pitch, turning even a simple contact timing into an excuse to attack a political opponent. Sometimes, he truly wished he could strangle these noisy troublemakers.
Unfortunately, that wasn't possible; his Mourning Undead Legion was cobbled together, comprising thirty-six Mourning Undead Soldiers from six chairmen. Without orders, he couldn't command other Mourning Undead Soldiers.
With patience, Feiodor reported, “After discovering the disappearance of the Light Point Fortress, we flew towards its last known location for two days, but it still hasn't reappeared. What should we do now? Please advise from the council. My suggestion is to immediately turn around and head in the direction of the Friel Empire.”
“The moving path of the Light Point Fortress points towards the Friel Empire, we can get ahead of it on its path and wait for it. If it changes direction midway, the council can organize a portion of personnel to intercept it. We will try to return as quickly as possible.”
The Divine Light Alliance is three to four months away from the Friel Empire by airship, calculated by the average speed. However, the Mourning Undead Soldiers could fly directly, taking much less time. If using the Teleportation Array, it would only take a day to get back.
But on the Friel Empire's territory, whether they can locate a Teleportation Array is questionable. They needed to prepare for the worst scenario; each chairman still has half of the Mourning Undead Soldiers under them, forming another Mourning Undead Legion.
Feiodor is a competent legion commander; not only did he report the situation, but he also proposed his plan, highly feasible. Even Joseph couldn't make unreasonable trouble, or the other chairmen wouldn't support him.
After a final discussion, the relatively neutral Chairman Hertro said, “Legion Commander Feiodor, proceed according to your plan…”
Chairman Hertro hadn't finished speaking when Feiodor interrupted him: “No need, Chairman, the Light Point Fortress has reappeared.”
After cutting the communication, Feiodor looked at the light that had reappeared off its original position, a bad feeling in his heart. This single bright spot in the dark, why did it remind him of bait used for fishing?
