Chapter 1419: Chapter 980: Is This The Thought Process of an Alchemist?
At night, in Violet's tent, Roland, exhausted from a day's labor, is sleepless and fondly wiping the newly received equipment. Gazing upon the dragon scale-like pattern on the longsword, Roland understands why it's called “Dragon Pattern Steel Core.”
The weapon, composed of layers with varying hardness and toughness, and incorporating an incredibly hard steel core, is, according to Master Durken, just ordinary stuff: “This is just the run-of-the-mill equipment; I'll forge you something better soon.”
Unable to help himself, Roland retorts, “This is ordinary? Just how good are the better ones?”
One of Roland's men, also polishing armor, responds, “I've asked Big Mouth Dragon Lord Nage, and it said Dragon Pattern Steel Core is just the foundation. You can add Mithril Magic Patterns, Soil Forge Burn, Gem Enhancement, Piercing Enchantment, Gravity Strengthening, Magnetic Modification, Primordial Crystal Plating, and so on.”
With each term Roland hears, his cheeks twitch involuntarily. He can understand the first few, which sound expensive enough, but the later ones are beyond his comprehension, seemingly too formidable for them struggling mercenaries to afford.
“Ha ha, Lord Nage is just teasing you. Even this basic layered longsword is beyond our means, let alone enhancing it with enchantments. Dream on,” Roland quickly cuts down his man's hopes.
Better not let them indulge in such dreams, or they'll become unruly, always pestering him for better equipment. Where would he even obtain such finer gear for them?
Having finished wiping, Roland takes out some mutton fat for rust protection, but his man hurriedly interjects, “Captain, Lord Nage said there's no need for oil. The sword has a self-repairing feature; the more you use it, the newer it becomes. It won't rust. This is a basic feature of all Master Durken's alchemical items, even the ordinary ones.”
Automatic repair is straightforward, add some bone powder and it's done. Every alchemical item crafted by Master Durken has this basic feature. But to Roland, this still sounds utterly extraordinary, leaving him speechless: “…And this is still considered ordinary?”
Though he protests out loud, deep down Roland is pondering: Just who are these people, casually handing out such high-grade equipment?
At that moment, footsteps approach from outside the tent, and a procession enters–the Mourning Undead Soldiers, the talkative dragon Lord Nage draped in a cloak, and Alchemy King Durken wearing a high hat…
Huh?! Mourning Undead Soldiers? Roland fixates on the Mourning Undead Soldiers, sensing a familiar presence: “Ancestral Grandpa?”
“Ha ha, good boy,” the Mourning Undead Soldier speaks with Ziora's voice.
Roland takes a deep breath. The mere mention of Mourning Undead Soldiers resonates in the Divine Light Alliance like thunder, and now it reverberates throughout the Friel Empire as well. Although their power may not match the top-tier Sword of Silence and Heat, or the mad Godslayer of the Friel Empire, their strength lies in numbers.
The known six major forces of the Alliance have seventy-two already, not including those in the hands of the Great Speaker. No enemy can withstand the charge of dozens of Mourning Undead Soldiers.
Now, such extraordinary combat power stands before him, and it's his own ancestor. Roland thinks the equipment he's been issued is pretty good, but it pales in comparison to Ziora. What gear could rival a Mourning Body?
“Grandpa, this… this…” Roland wants to reach out and touch but dares not.
Master Durken casually tosses over a longsword, saying, “You possess the Power of Chaos. Come, try this Crystal-plated Sword.”
Crystal plating is a new technique Ange learned after coming here, using Chaos Stone and Black Crystal to coat other items, endowing them with the properties of Origin Power.
For example, Ange's planting construct body is plated with Chaos Stone and Black Crystal, making the body incredibly tough, able to endure the force of Dragon God Transformation.
As for the Monarch, their skeleton is also coated with a layer of Black Crystal, almost as hard as a Black Crystal Body, with only the joints and Energy Level falling slightly short.
Master Durken, realizing this brand-new plating technique, clings to Ange, insisting on plating a batch of weapons. He arranges various alchemical items into a circle, with Ange at the center detonating Chaos Stones to spatter and coat with crystals. After finishing one side, they flip everything over and do it once more, all set.
Now, this is a weapon plated with Chaos Stone crystals, which seems to amplify the Power of Chaos. Among those present, Roland has the strongest Battle Qi of Chaos, so everyone hastens to have him test the sword.
Roland took the longsword with a puzzled look, swung it a few times, then turned to Durken without understanding.
Durken said: “Channel your battle qi into the sword and see.”
Roland gripped the sword hilt hard, his battle qi surged into the blade, and then his eyes widened in surprise as he began to swing involuntarily.
“What does it feel like?” Durken asked.
“It feels smoother; the sword seems like it has become part of my body,” Roland replied.
Durken tossed over another sword: “Try this one, which feels smoother?”
“The second one,” Roland said.
Durken explained: “The second one has a crystal-plated steel core, while the first one has a crystal-plated body but not the blade. Now try chopping and splitting.”
As Durken spoke, he set up various materials for sword testing, including leather armor, iron sheets, and stones, but without exception, Roland cut through them all cleanly with one stroke.
“Which one is more practicable?” asked Durken.
“The second one,” Roland responded without hesitation.
Durken nodded: “It seems that a crystal-plated steel core is more useful than a crystal-plated body. It looks like the crystal-plated steel core can be finalized. Take it and have a fight with your grandfather.”
“Ah?” Roland, holding the longsword, hesitated as he looked towards Ziora. Should he really strike at an ancestor? Isn't that inappropriate?
Ziora, on the contrary, was eager to try. He had trained in the spherical space against Mourning Undead Soldiers for so long, yet only today did he gain a body. Ziora was eager to know the true strength of a complete Mourning Undead Soldier.
Soul Flame rose up, Soul Armor materialized, and Ziora charged at Roland with the longsword, engaging him in battle, the sound of their clashing ringing out.
Both of their martial techniques were actually quite good, and since it was a sparring match, the fight was intense but not deadly.
Durken shouted discontentedly: “Put more strength into it, don't be afraid. As long as you don't blow up your heads, I can save you. Push harder or we won't be able to test the limits of the weapon.”
Alright then, upon hearing this, Ziora said: “Be careful, I'm going to speed up.” Then, his speed suddenly increased. Obviously, he had been holding back before; otherwise, with the speed of a Mourning Undead Soldier, the fight would have been over in a few moments.
Roland was unfazed. After a warm-up period, he too had grown accustomed to the smoothness of the longsword. With battle qi infused, he struck forward, and an arm fell to the ground.
“???” Everyone stared in bewilderment at the arm on the ground, then at Ziora's shoulder, finally shifting their gaze to the longsword in Roland's hand, which flickered with a red glow.
“This… this can actually cut off the arm of a Body of Mourning? Is the Mourning arm that fragile?” Negris exclaimed in shock.
Durken's eyes sparkled: “No, it's the crystal-plated longsword that brought out the full power of the Power of Chaos. My thinking was right after all. The Power of Chaos and the crystal-plated longsword are a perfect match. Forge two thousand of them for the Chaos Great Swordsmen, and they could slice through any number of Mourning Undead Soldiers.”
Is this the way of an alchemist? If quantity isn't enough, make up for it with equipment; if quality isn't enough, stack equipment to equal it?
