Chapter 1337: Chapter 898: The Horse Jumps By Itself Chapter 1337: Chapter 898: The Horse Jumps By Itself Adams finished his questioning and finally understood the situation of this person.
Emil was a Farming Knight from the Church of Light's District of the Land of Death–yeah, a Farming Knight. It indeed sounded odd, which was probably why he didn't dare to speak loudly when he introduced himself.
A Farming Knight wasn't specifically tasked with farming; it was just a low-level title. Normally, with the main focus being self-sustainability, Emil was also tasked with the duty of mobile trial.
The wilderness was almost lawless, where might reigned supreme. Trivial matters could escalate into violent conflicts. Without authoritative adjudication, both parties might resort to bloodshed over minor disputes.
The Mobile Court was a traveling judiciary institution, delivering fairness and justice to the remote wilderness and letting the laws of Light illuminate the remote corners.
Had Negris or Anthony been here, they would have understood immediately that knights of the Mobile Court were also called Holy Badge Knights, but people preferred to call them Wilderness Knights, Exile Knights, or Soil Knights.
After his reincarnation, Anthony often chose this position to start with. Having this experience, he would get promoted quickly upon return.
But it was too exhausting and too miserable. Once Anthony had established his own power, he never wanted to choose this way again.
Since Mobile Courts were generally set up in very remote areas with sparse populations and harsh conditions, survival was difficult, akin to being exiled to the wilderness–a body covered in dust on sunny days, hence also called Soil Knights.
If not for the extremely devout and just-hearted knights, no one would choose this profession voluntarily, unless someone with ulterior motives like Anthony or maybe those who had offended others and were exiled.
The Holy Badge Knights generally carried a holy badge, a huge emblem as large as a shield, engraved with a set of scales, symbolizing the God of Equality and Balance. When placed on the stand during judgment, it was solemn and sacred.
Yet, Emil wasn't carrying a holy badge. Besides that, Holy Badge Knights would normally travel in groups of three–a pair of Paladins and a Priest.
Considering that Mobile Courts were established in remote locations, a group of three could support and supervise each other. Given Emil was on his own, it clearly deviated from the norm.
However, Little Bone wasn't from the Church and was unaware of these details. When Adams was projected into the Chaos Plane, the Church of Light hadn't risen yet, so he didn't inquire further.
After Adams had asked enough, Emil mustered the courage to ask, “May I know how to address this esteemed individual?”
“Just call me Adams,” Adams replied.
Emil then turned to Little Bone and asked, “And how should I address the Lord Sky Rider?”
Before Little Bone could respond, Adams preemptively answered, “You can call him Angu.”
'Little Bone' didn't sound like a proper name but rather a nickname, and indeed, it was a casual one given by Ange, which others would envy for not being as suitable.
Broadcasting that would lower Little Bone's dignity, and it would affect his own reputation in Bone Staff. If 'Little Bone' was the call, then what would he be called? Little Bone Stick?
Thinking of a name that would make him cringe to the tips of his toes, Adams hurriedly answered. Since the Law Breaker was called Ange, it made sense for his skeleton to be called Angu.
Little Bone tilted his head, feeling it was about right, and accepted the name.
“Lord Angu, Lord Adams, thank you for your life-saving grace. I must continue to carry out my mission now,” Emil stood up and bowed respectfully.
“Now? You won't wait for daylight?” Adams asked, puzzled.
“No, it's best to travel in the wilderness at night and rest during the day to avoid scorching to death. Black Soil Village isn't far from here. If I move now, I can reach it before dawn,” Emil said.
“But are you sure your body can handle it?” asked Adams.
When they had rescued him, Emil's condition was terrible; he was on the brink of death. In such a state, normal people would be drained of everything; how he could run and jump after just one meal? He should at least rest for a few days to regain his strength.
“It's fine, I'm used to it. The God of Balance protects me; nothing will happen,” said Emil, placing his hands together in front of him in devout prayer: “Equality, justice, mercy, glory, farming…”
With Emil's prayer, a faint glow lit up on his body again.
“Wow, such magical magic,” exclaimed Adams in surprise, “just muttering a few words can heal the body's pain?”
He left the Master Plane when the Church of Light was not yet influential, so he was not familiar with Divine Light Magic and thought it was some sort of magic.
Even if he had been familiar, he would have been amazed because the magic he knew could not heal the body with just an incantation.
Little Bone didn't find it surprising; this was the power of a king. Emil's spell was just a recovery spell, not even a proper Healing Spell. Compared to the Purify spell that beautified one's face or the Rebirth Technique that could regenerate limbs, it was vastly inferior.
However, Little Bone did think of something. Once recovered, it took two horses' reins and handed them to Emil, “Here, ride.”
It had found it bothersome that the horses needed to eat and drink during the day. Now was the perfect chance to hand them off.
“Ah? No, no, it's far too valuable, I can't accept this,” Emil hastily refused.
“Ride.” Little Bone thrust the reins into Emil's hand, then pinched his hand so he couldn't let go, pinching him until he yelped in pain.
“Ow, ow, okay, I'll take it, I'll take it, thank you, Lord Angu,” Emil gratefully accepted Little Bone's 'kindness,' shaking his reddened hand and said with distress, “But I can only take one; I can't afford to keep two.”
Keeping live horses was beyond the means of a poor knight like him. He used to ride a Bone Horse provided by the curia. Only the city priests and knights were allotted live horses because the cost of keeping horses in the wilderness was too high.
Little Bone regretfully took back one of the reins. Not being able to give it away meant he still had to take care of it. What to do? Maybe just drop it in place and run away.
Emil couldn't appreciate its troubles but was just grateful, “Thank you for your grace, Lord Angu, may Holy Light be with you.”
Mounting the horse, Emil sprinted into the night.
Once Emil had left, Little Bone found itself with free time. It pulled out the grass seeds it had collected during the day, conjured some water droplets to water them, and began to urge them to sprout in its hand.
As soon as it started working with the Water Element, Little Bone realized the water vapor at night was much more abundant than during the day. It hurriedly cast the Rain Technique to gather all the vapor to avoid collecting it many times like during the day to have enough for the horses, which was too troublesome.
While Little Bone was busy and it was not yet dawn, Adams quickly contacted the Ancient Godlight to report, “Lord Godlight, that skeleton has killed more than twenty people these past few days.”
“Ah? Is that a lot or a little?” asked Ancient Godlight, puzzled.
“It's a lot. Without even a word, others were killed by it. Truly befitting an Undead Skeleton, too brutal,” said Adams.
“That's good,” Ancient Godlight replied with satisfaction, “remember your mission, exterminate all life so that world loses the thread of time.”
“Yes, my Lord,” Adams sighed with relief after completing his report, surviving another day.
In the following days, he planned to scrape by one day at a time. Otherwise, if he tried to do anything, the Fraudster's Mark on his bone staff might activate.
But that didn't matter much. Human life is actually quite short. When Adams was human, he thought living to 120 years old would be pretty good.
The rate between the two worlds was vastly different. He could linger here for 120 years, and only about twenty-some days would pass for Ancient Godlight. That should be enough to scrape by.
Coming to his senses, Adams suddenly noticed he was floating on the surface of the water. The sand pit in front of Little Bone had turned into a water pit?
“Blub–Is this your Rain Technique? It's more like a Flood Technique! Quickly, pick me up, bones will get rheumatism from soaking in water!” Adams roared. He was intending to laze around for a hundred and some years, but in a flash, Little Bone had him soaking in water.
After fishing out the bone staff and shaking off the water, the sky was beginning to lighten. Just then, a sound of hoofbeats arose. Little Bone looked towards the source of the sound and saw the horse Emil had ridden galloping towards them at a swift pace, but Emil was nowhere to be seen on its back.
“Huh? The reins are knotted. This indicates danger was encountered, suggesting the horse to escape on its own.”
