Chapter 1148: Chapter 712: There is Something Strange About This Great Elf Chapter 1148: Chapter 712: There is Something Strange About This Great Elf Anrus's eyes bulged with disbelief at the surging life force within the object; such a force was impossible to counterfeit.
Anthony decided not to bring out the Little Sapling or the God of Life because it seemed far-fetched. A 'human' carrying two gods of life would appear blasphemous and profane to the eyes of the elves.
The Heart of Life was just right; it was hard to imitate yet very fitting for their current pretense, entirely plausible.
Hesitantly, Anrus glanced at Anthony, then leaned in for a closer look at the Heart of Life, carefully feeling the surging life force within before enviously remarking, “It really is the Heart of Life.”
Anthony sensitively caught the envy in her tone and nonchalantly said, “Yes, you elves have so many treasures, and plenty of things enriched with life force, like the Moon Spring, dewdrops, and the Fruit of Life. The Heart of Life is hardly anything special.”
When he mentioned those terms, Anthony carefully watched Anrus's expressions change. Her eyes grew wider with each word, and at the mention of the Fruit of Life, she couldn't help but swallow her salivation.
Anthony's mind stirred, thinking how pure these elves were, with even poorer control over their expressions than Negris, their thoughts laid bare on their faces.
“Are you really the Plane Elves sent to rescue us?” Anrus was clearly overwhelmed by the allure of so many wonders, involuntarily buying into Anthony's fabricated story.
Sometimes deceiving someone was just that simple, using a concocted identity with an irresistible enticement or threat for the other party. Thus, even if there were inconsistencies in the story, they would choose to overlook them because of the seductive bait.
Like the recent scam from the House of the Deceased, claiming you've won a grand prize–a luxury Magic Carriage worth twenty thousand Demon Crystals, to be shipped via the Teleportation Array. However, they'd require you to cover the shipping cost of ten Demon Crystals first.
If you, out of greed, paid the shipping cost, the scammers would disappear without a trace.
If Ange's identity was a lie, then naturally the Fruit of Life would also be a lie. But she really longed for it, so it must be real, right? They must truly possess the Fruit of Life, they must have it. Then were these people really the Plane Elves sent to rescue them?
For the objects of her intense desire, Anrus compelled herself to believe in their identity. Her focus wasn't on whether they were 'sent by the Plane Elves' anymore but shifted to whether they had come to 'rescue them.'
Anthony quickly shook his head, “We were commissioned to rescue the Tree People of the Divine Tree. Are you also Tree People of the Divine Tree? If so, you are included in our mission.”
“Yes, yes, we certainly are; we're the most loyal children of the Divine Tree,” Anrus hurriedly claimed.
Yet, Anthony frowned and said, “But how could you be Tree People of the Divine Tree if you don't even recognize a Tree Herder?”
With a surprised look at Trent, Anrus exclaimed loudly, “That's not a Tree Herder! It's a Tree Monster sealed here by the Divine Tree, a parasite feeding on the essence of the Divine Tree, a monster that invades our minds. You're entrusted by the Plane Elves; don't just believe it blindly–it can speak inside your heads and can control you.”
Trent appeared resigned, his hands opening and closing in the gesture of strangling something.
Anthony looked from Trent to Anrus and asked, “Is there some misunderstanding between you? What do you mean by 'it speaks in their heads'?”
Trent replied helplessly, “The whispers of the forest–these fools don't even recognize the whispers of the forest anymore.”
Everyone nodded as if they had just remembered something. When they had pursued the Divine Body, they had entered the forest, and the forest had rustled softly. They had then heard the voice of the God of Life, which must have been the whisper of the forest.
Unexpectedly, these Void Elves did not recognize it and even thought that Trent was trying to invade their minds.
Negris leaned over to Anthony and whispered, “Could it be because there are no forests in the Void, so they can't hear clearly?”
Anthony rolled his eyes and said irritably, “That's a very creative idea.”
There was definitely some misunderstanding. However, with so much time passed, the Void Elves had no idea what had actually happened; they only knew from ancestral legends that this place was the forbidden land of the Elf Clan, where a Rotting Tree Monster was sealed. The Tree Monster possessed the ability to invade the consciousness of Elves, so all Elves were forbidden to come near.
Then Trent claimed to be hungry, but no one paid any attention to him. Instead, they all avoided him. If someone had just given him a little water, he wouldn't have been amassing the energy for Rebirth only now.
Anthony declared this was a Tree Herder, but Anrus simply did not believe it and refused to let Trent leave.
“Heh, we are Elves who've been commissioned to rescue the Divine Tree. This is the first individual we're rescuing. Whatever misunderstandings you may have, if you obstruct me, you will surely suffer the wrath of the gods.”
Anthony finished sternly, then shifted his tone, “However, maybe you've been deceived by something. I can teleport it away, back into the embrace of the Elf Clan, and I hope you will not interfere.”
His approach combined firmness and gentleness–first making Anrus think a fight was imminent, then offering a proposal everyone could accept. This change left Anrus feeling that perhaps it would be acceptable to let Trent go.
However, Anthony didn't wait for her acceptance. When it was necessary to be firm, one had to be firm, not creating an impression of weakness others could exploit. So he quickly leaned over to Ange and whispered:
“My lord, can you craft a Teleportation Array, shove Trent into a Dimensional Space, and then throw the array onto the ground, creating the illusion of teleporting him away?”
Ange nodded, rubbed his hands together to create a Teleportation Array, and pressed it directly onto Trent's body. As soon as his hand touched the other, he had pushed Trent into a Dimensional Space. The array then burst into a dazzling light, and as the light faded, Trent was gone.
Anyone who saw this scene would think Trent was teleported away, yet Anrus looked shocked and hesitant. Could it be that she had never seen a Teleportation Array before?
“Alright, the Tree Herder has returned to the embrace of the Elf Clan. And you? It seems you're not in the best state. Oh, right, the Elves gave us lots of Moon Juice Fruit. Why don't we find a spot to sit down, have some Moon Juice Fruit and Moon Spring Wine, and then talk?”
Anthony easily took control of the entire situation, watching the 'Tree Monster' disappear. Anrus, feeling helpless, could only follow Anthony's suggestion to find a place to eat and drink and then talk. Clearly, even if she could defeat these people before her, she had no idea how to bring the Tree Monster back.
And as for Moon Juice Fruit? It sounded pretty delicious. Moon Spring Wine? Wine was the stuff of legends; was it tasty?
With her head filled with confusion, Anrus led the group away from the forbidden lands and towards another 'Giant Rock'.
The Elves had already sent someone ahead to report and gain the approval of the Great Elf before they could enter the Elf dwelling.
Soon, the Elf who had gone to report came back and announced, “The Great Elf welcomes the adventurers who have come from afar to the Holy Land.”
The group continued to approach and from a distance saw the so-called Great Elf. Feeling the aura emanating from this being, they exchanged glances with strange expressions on their faces. There was something odd about this Great Elf.
