Chapter 1113: Chapter 677 Unable to Afford Chapter 1113: Chapter 677 Unable to Afford Illusionists were “fertilizing” the Holy Shell Eggs, and Ange was doing the same, except he fitted the Holy Armor onto an Elf Chariot.
“You really thought of fitting Holy Armor on a chariot, why don't you just fit it on the Conch Plane as well?” Negris complained, but couldn't help but admire this miraculous way of thinking.
Originally, Elf Chariots needed Void Chimeras to pull them. For the Void Tree, which owns all the resources of the Void, raising a few dozen Void Chimeras was an effortless task, used for pulling the chariots in peace and charging into battle in time of war.
But after Ange hatched one, he found he couldn't afford it.
Even if he cultivated the entire Master Plane with World Trees, he still couldn't afford several dozen Void Chimeras. They grew several dozen times larger than regular Chimeras when mature, but ate much more.
Void Chimeras can feed on Chaos Mist, but when there is no Chaos Mist, they consume a super amount of regular food, just like when people don't have oils and fats, their food intake becomes particularly large–dozens of them could easily strip the vegetation of an entire plane clean.
At first, Ange fed it with impure Mist of Belief, and in less than half a year, it had grown as big as a Giant Dragon. The Divine Power expended for one meal was enough for Ange to cultivate the land dozens of times.
Anxious, Ange quickly switched to other food sources. One Chimera consumed the food of twenty thousand people, and this was when it was only the size of an adult Red Dragon. If it were to grow dozens of times bigger, it might need the food for millions of people to be sustainable.
Ange promptly sealed the remaining Chimera eggs. For now, he would just let the hatched one alternate between feasting and fasting.
As a result, the often hungry Chimera named Doodoo learned a new trick–scrounging for meals.
Of course, it wouldn't scrounge from ordinary people, but mainly from the Elf Queen, Big Cat, Dragon Clan, and Lisa. After a few meals, everyone got a headache at its sight, and even Gailard would immediately hide his food and pretend to be full when he saw it coming.
Without the Void Chimeras to pull them, Ange had to come up with another way to move the Elf Chariots. That's when he had the ingenious idea to fit the Holy Armor onto the chariots.
Besides providing additional defensive power to the chariots, the numerous winglets also allowed the chariots to move in the Void, with higher efficiency and lower energy consumption. Furthermore, there was no longer a need to maintain dozens of Great Chimeras when stationary.
“But the Void Chimeras are also powerful forces in combat, aren't you really going to keep a few for battle charges?” Negris asked, and then they both turned to look at Doodoo, who was playing chase with Big Cat in the distance.
The Red Dragon Clan Leader Diyali named this Void Chimera Doodoo, because it was so fat, almost the same size as the plump insects they bred for barbecuing.
Big Cat was a bit helpless being chased by it and had to reveal its true form–a fifty-meter-wide giant furball. Despite the Void Chimera's enormous food intake, it was indeed full of energy. If it set its sights on you and you didn't play with it for a while, it could chase you for days and nights on end.
Doodoo excitedly pounced on and began licking the furry ball voraciously, grooming Big Cat's fluffy fur meticulously until its face of utter despondency emerged from beneath.
Negris quickly retracted his question, then said, “Never mind, let it go to battle and charge, just hope it doesn't start playing with the enemy.”
Anthony also spread his hands in regret. He highly valued the size of the Void Chimera because size often equates to combat strength. If it could be raised to maturity, it would become the first of Ange's Void Giant Beasts.
Unfortunately, they were stuck at the most practical step: they couldn't afford it. They could barely afford one or two, but any more than that became unsustainable.
“If we want to maintain a stable population, we need dozens of them, at least as many as the Giant Dragons. The God of Life's progenitor left eighty Chimera eggs, probably the number needed for a stable population. How can we afford eighty, they could eat the entire Master Plane bare,” Negris worriedly said.
This was an issue that needed to be prepared for in advance, because Void Chimeras are alive. Once hatched, you can't just stop caring for them tomorrow if you can't afford it, nor can you temporarily shut them down like you can with a Mechanical Construct, waiting to turn them back on when you can afford it.
Once they hatch, there's no turning back; they must be cared for and provided with an appropriate environment for growth and breeding. One certainly can't castrate them or deny them the chance to reproduce.
It's the nature of living beings; even the God of Life knows about pollination. If you castrate them, they're really going to bite you.
Moreover, with their combat prowess, once hatched, there's no way to abandon them because a single Void Chimera is already a catastrophic disaster for many planes–and eighty could chew up an entire plane.
“But they're really strong, you see. Look at Doodoo; its size is now similar to that of Big Cat, but Big Cat can't beat it even without using dimensional abilities. I suspect it can't win even if it does use them. It seems to be immune to many kinds of damage. Once it reaches adulthood, it could be dozens of times larger than it is now–who could then defeat it?” Anthony said enviously.
He was just a being from a different plane, a whole dimension away from Void creatures. Now, with seventy-nine eggs of Giant Beasts before him, he didn't dare to hatch them because he couldn't afford their upkeep. It felt like entering a vault and leaving empty-handed because the gold bars were too heavy to carry.
“Yes, who could defeat it? If we had several dozens of them, we wouldn't even need to fear the Serpent of Misfortune breaking in,” Negris said with regret in his voice.
“The main problem is they eat too much. If they're allowed to eat freely, they can consume a few times their own size in food. I don't know where they put all that food. They must have a space-compressing stomach or something,” Anthony said, still shaken; a food intake that could scare Ange would certainly startle him first.
Negris explained, “Ange has already checked, and it makes sense. After all, it's a Void Creature. In the Void, it might not get a meal for hundreds of years, so when it can eat, a meal ought to last a few hundred years. The Serpent of Misfortune said the same thing.”
Possibly hearing someone mention its name, a snake poked its head out from the distance, “Who called me? Little Snake is here.”
“Didn't call you–we were saying you're handsome,” Anthony casually brushed it off.
Little Snake happily retracted back.
“Who would've thought, even the God of Farming has such days, stumped by a creature that eats too much. Ever since the Elf Beans were harvested in abundance, Ange hasn't had to worry about food for a long time,” Negris mused, his tone sounding somewhat schadenfreude.
Anthony rolled his eyes, “The Lord isn't troubled, just thinking of a solution.”
Negris rolled his eyes too, “What solution could there be but to plant more food? But where do we plant it? Almost every place where we could plant is taken. You're not thinking of planting in the Void, are you?”
It wasn't impossible; using planting spheres, one could grow things in the Void, but the cost was astronomical. Meeting the demands of three to fifty thousand people was manageable, but millions or billions was impossible.
Plus, it would need pure Water Elements for maintenance. Now that Tom and Lorca have been transferred to the Conch Plane, they are using the repulsion and attraction of two pure Water Elements to move the plane, not even bothering with the Starburst Array.
The current Starburst Array could only filter various wastewater.
However, with the popularization of the Holy Armor, ordinary people on the Starburst Array could now travel to and from the Void without airships, managing the crops on the planting spheres.
With a large number of people and magic, it was barely possible to manage a few spheres growing quick-growing vegetables. Thus, the Starburst Array now also had fresh vegetables to eat.
But relying on planting spheres to satisfy the needs of several dozen adult Void Chimeras was not very feasible.
So Ange was distressed. It felt like the old days in the Lich Underground City when they didn't grow enough food to eat; but unlike then, Ange's current distress wasn't for lack of a solution, but for not knowing which method was more effective, leaving no choice but to try one after another.
Ange called over Negris, flew to the War Giant Tree, and kicked it, “Roots, stretch out over there.”
“Let your roots extend out into the Void, to that place,” Negris translated, and then his heart skipped a beat–could this Dead Skull actually manage to grow things in the Void?
