Chapter 4469: Two Young Hearts?
The night was tranquil, wrapped in a gentle veil of silver moonlight.
Manifestation of little insects chirped softly in the underbrush, blending with the faint rustle of leaves. The secluded spot within the estate's garden was naturally shrouded by overhanging branches, tall hedges, and thick beds of wildflowers and shrubs.
It could be said to be a natural place for secret meetings. The master of this place had even engaged in intimacy here with one of his wives.
But at this moment, there was an unknown person.
Standing there was a young maid, no more than twenty, her delicate form trembling faintly.
Her hair was a vibrant shade of orange, like autumn flames under the moon, tied back into a tidy bun with a silken ribbon. A few strands curled loose around her cheeks, framing her youthful, blushing face. She wore a modest yet flattering maid uniform, its soft collar and flowing sleeves elegant and proper. But the fabric clung slightly to her curves, especially around her ample bosoms, as though even the garments struggled to contain the quiet allure she exuded.
She kept her head low, clasping her hands tightly in front of her. She fidgeted mostly, occasionally looking around.
Abruptly, a crimson-white-robed man appeared from the winding path, a light smile blooming across his face the moment he saw her. His careful eyes softened, holding an almost innocent affection. The tension in his shoulders seemed to vanish as he stepped closer.
"Saffira..."
"Second Young Master, please forgive this lowly maid," Saffira spoke softly, bowing until her head reached the height of her hip, "I have done something dishonorable."
Lucian's brows lifted, and he quickly moved forward.
"Ah, no, no. It is I who have made a mistake. You don't need to feel guilty about it." his voice was laced with panic and regret.
She lifted her head slightly, her eyes shimmering in the moonlight, "But I... shouldn't have let it happen. I should've known better, and yet-"
"I knew what I was doing," Lucian said, cutting her off gently. "If anything, I took advantage of your feelings. If there is anyone who should apologize, it's me."
"How can... that be...?"
Saffira said, her eyes turning moist. Their gaze appeared to have been interlocked, unable to move away.
Silence lingered between them. She bit her lower lip, hesitant. The wind fluttered the loose edges of her sleeves, and somewhere in the branches above, a pair of spirit insects chirped and flew away.
Hidden behind a thick tree trunk, Davis watched. His gaze was unreadable, neither cold nor warm, but full of thought. Moreover, there was another person.
Head Maid Esvele had just finished scanning the surroundings, ready to emerge and intervene, her eyes sharp like a hawk. But before she could, Davis's voice emerged from the darkness like a whisper against her ear.
"I'll take care of it. You can leave."
Esvele stilled, instinctively reaching for the source of the voice before recognizing the voice. She turned slightly and bowed,
"As you command," she whispered through soul transmission, vanishing like mist.
Back in the clearing, Lucian took the maid's hand in his, lifting it gently, "Tell me honestly... do you regret it?"
The maid shook her head, tears gathering at the corners of her eyes. "No. I only regret that I might've ruined your future by being selfish..."
"Then I have no regrets either." Lucian chuckled, but it was a quiet, bitter sound, "My future... that's something that couldn't be predicted. You know what I am, right...?"
Saffira nodded lightly, "A Divergent like the Palace Master."
"Are you not afraid?" Lucian couldn't help but smile.
"Afraid... very afraid..."
Saffira's eyes widened, but a smile appeared on her lips, "But this family is so peaceful and kind. Everyone is good to me, while back home, I was bullied incessantly. Although Head Maid Esvele is scarier, she looks after us like we're her own siblings. She doesn't force us to do something if we don't want to do it. More than anything-"
Lucian raised one of his brows, "Who dared to bully you?"
"Ah, it's just my neighbors. It's not a serious matter..." Saffira hurriedly shook her head.
"You're protecting them."
"No, no... I... I don't want anyone to be hurt. More than anything, I don't want Second Young Master to be hurt or suffer for me..."
"Saffira..."
Lucian's golden eyes gleamed in the night, absolutely entrancing.
"Second Young Master..."
Saffira appeared to be mesmerized. She closed her eyes. Upon noticing the cue, Lucian's heart shook. His young heart throbbed with excitement and warmth before he leaned and kissed her lips.
"How dare you?"
Or that's what he thought until he opened his eyes when he heard the voice and saw a talisman that stuck to his face.
It was as though a lightning bold had struck their minds.
Lucian jumped and saw his father at the corner of his eyes. He instantly wanted to run, kneel, and apologize all at the same time, but his mouth was sealed. It left behind the maid, Saffira, who appeared to take a few steps back in extreme distress and shock.
When she came out of her reverie, she shuddered heavily and instantly knelt and smashed her head on the dirt ground.
"Palace Master, this lowly maid deserves to die a hundred deaths! Please have mercy!"
She squealed, tears forming in her eyes as she kept her head pasted on the ground.
Lucian's eyes were wide as he looked at her and his father. He instantly appeared in front of her, spreading his hands to guard her.
"Vhm-vu-vmm-hnm! Nnnm-ibnni-bmmmm!"
He tried to speak but couldn't even make a word, much less a sentence.
"..." Davis nearly burst out laughing. However, he kept a cold expression.
"My son, I don't mean to interrupt your nightly affairs, but as far as I can remember, you don't have a wife yet. Could it be that she has seduced you and led you down a wrong path?"
"Mnnnnnmmm!!!"
Lucian shook his head hurriedly, shaking his hands in a cross and saying that was not the case.
"I see. You want me to make a mincemeat out of her."
"Nnnn!!!"
Lucian growled, directly taking out his sword and pointing at Davis before he quickly realized his mistake and dropped it to cup his hands as though begging.
Finally, Davis could bear it no more. His second son was really genuine and innocent, unlike his elder brother.
He removed the seal on his mouth.
Lucian could finally speak, "Father, please... I... it's my fault. I favored Saffira and caused her to be implicated. Please forgive her. I'm willing to take any punishment!"
