Chapter 498: Chapter 497 Guardian of the Goddess Chapter 498: Chapter 497 Guardian of the Goddess When Javelin arrived back at the camp with the Paladin named Fino, the others had already prepared for battle. However, to their disappointment, Fino seemed to have changed completely, or rather, his responses were not at all human-like but resembled that of a wild beast.
According to Javelin, almost the entire way back he had struggled fiercely to break free from the Klein Field; it was only upon reaching the camp and seeing Wells and the other people from the Sanctuary that this Paladin named Fino managed to barely control himself and did not attack anyone else. However, the expression he wore as he looked at everyone was still very cautious, as if a wild beast were observing an unknown creature.
In the end, left with no choice, Wells had the accompanying Cleric cast a few soothing Divine Arts on him, which finally put Fino into a deep sleep, temporarily restoring peace.
“This is what happens when one is eroded by Chaos.”
Watching Fino lying inside the tent, Wells too felt quite pensive.
“We have suffered a lot in the past. Many brave young men died in vain; they didn't die by the hands of Demon Beasts or killed by Cultists, but gradually eroded by the Chaos until…”
Wells indicated towards his own head and shook it sadly.
“What will happen to him next?”
“Send him back to the Sanctuary.”
At this point, Wells sighed.
“Poor child, he will probably have to spend the rest of his life in the Monastery, hoping that it can soothe his heart lost in the Chaos… Fortunately, he did bring us some clues.”
As he spoke, Wells took out a tattered notebook.
“This is?”
“It's a marching record. Scouts sent out to inspect need to record everything they see, just in case something happens…”
Wells paused, looking towards the sleeping Fino with complicated eyes.
“…At least we can know what happened to them.”
“……”
Fang Zheng didn't say anything further. He reached out, opened the notebook, and soon, lines of text appeared before him.
“Day of the Waning Moon, night. We were dispatched to investigate why this beast tide had not subsided. Honestly, it's dangerous, but we were prepared. Moreover, the strangeness of this beast tide made us more curious to find out the reason. If this continues, the Northlands won't hold, we must find the answer…”
“…Today is the tenth day since we left the Northern Fortress. On our journey, we could see groups of Chaos Beasts large and small moving towards the direction of the Northern Fortress. This afternoon, we even encountered one of the beast groups. Honestly, I was ready to die in battle then, but unexpectedly, these beasts didn't attack us as we thought they would. Instead, they just bypassed us, running wildly ahead as if something were chasing them. What exactly happened? I am getting more curious…”
“……Day fifteen, we still haven't found the answer, but our supplies are starting to run low. Everyone started discussing whether to continue forward or to return. But in the end, we chose to press on. I don't know why, but the Chaos Beasts we encountered along the way didn't attack us. This is very unusual; I have fought them at the Northern Fortress before, and they were so ferocious that they disregarded everything. Now, thinking about it… Why exactly did they behave this way?”
“…Day 20, we ventured too deep and some of us started to experience clouded consciousness. Although we managed to hold on by reciting our scriptures, I think we may not make it back this time, so… at least let us find the truth.”
“…Day 23, at dawn, we heard a roaring sound from afar. It was so loud that our ears buzzed, and Hart suggested we scout ahead, which I agreed to. Following the direction of the sound, when we reached our destination, we found the area strewn with the corpses of Chaos Beasts… everywhere, I even saw the body of a Demon Beast Lord! Who was it fighting? We decided to continue pursuing, this time, we must find the answer…”
The following script appeared somewhat scribbled, possibly reflecting its writer's agitation and panic.
“…We found it! Following that trail, we found the source of the sound, oh my God, I couldn't believe what I saw! It was the Guardian of the Goddess! The Guardian of the Goddess!! I believe it must be the Guardian of the Goddess. Could it be that the Goddess has descended to the mortal realm? We tried to communicate with it, but it seemed unable to hear us. After all, it was too large, and we were too small… I don't know… I don't know…”
After this, the writing became disordered, clearly, as Wells had said, these people had been eroded by Chaos, making it difficult to stay rational.
“…Firelight… the horn of destruction and rebirth… I heard it, the Goddess's whisper. I must proclaim this great miracle to everyone, let them know that the Deity has descended!… I won't give up, I'll press on… This is my pilgrimage… Once I reach the end, I'll be able to enter the Divine Kingdom… Divine Kingdom… Divine Kingdom…”
That was his last entry. After that, nothing more was written in the diary, and Fang Zheng closed the notebook, handing it back to Wells.
“He did well.”
“Yes, he indeed did well.”
Hearing Fang Zheng's response, Wells gave a bitter smile.
“At least, he completed his mission, and he honored the glory of the citizens of order.”
With this said, Wells's expression turned solemn again.
“So, what is your opinion, Your Excellency Fang Zheng”
“The Guardian of the Goddess… If I remember correctly, that should refer to the giant who guarded the Goddess during the Chaos Wars according to the scriptures,” Fang Zheng said.
To avoid any future embarrassment of that sort, Fang Zheng had taken the time to memorize the entire script upon his return, as his current capabilities allowed him to easily commit things to memory. So, when Wells asked, Fang Zheng quickly recalled the pertinent records from his mind.
Legend described it as “a towering being with invulnerable armor, holding a Blade of Light powerful enough to cleave heaven and earth”–of course, as far as Fang Zheng was concerned… anything but Destiny Gundam would do.
That thing is really… beyond words.
Well… so to summarize, this scout squad stumbled upon something that greatly resembled the “Guardian of the Goddess”, and then they believed it was the manifestation of the Goddess. However, at that time, the recorder's mind was already unclear, resulting in a dispatch filled with praise for the Goddess's mighty deeds during the Chaos Wars. Afterward, it seemed the only thought left in his will was “follow the Guardian to find the Goddess,” which is why he kept following the Guardian.
However, Fang Zheng and Tina did not find the “Guardian,” it seems likely that the Guardian had left while the Paladin was sleeping, as, according to Fang Zheng's guess, the Guardian was probably some sort of machine, naturally not needing sleep like humans.
But if the Paladin hadn't taken the wrong path, then that means signs of the “Guardian” might be around. With that thought, Fang Zheng made a decision.
“So, it looks like we need to find this 'Guardian' next. If we're right, it must be the cause of the Northern Beasts' uprising.”
