To be honest, at first, he had no particular thoughts about the little Fire Dragon. He had intended to simply get rid of the creature and then turn around and walk away. But the little Fire Dragon seemed to have taken a liking to him, rubbing against him every time he pushed it away, as if it were playing a game with him. Eventually, Fang Zheng got tired of it, took to the sky, and planned to leave, only to hear the little Fire Dragon's desperate cries, yelling “ya ya” as though it were experiencing a life-or-death separation. With no other choice, Fang Zheng, after a great deal of thought, decided he had to take it with him.
He might as well treat it as if he had picked up a little kitten. What else could he do? Even though Fang Zheng had killed quite a number of Fire Dragons, it just didn't seem right to harm this one that was so affectionate and had just been born.
However, what really troubled Fang Zheng was the little Fire Dragon's food problem. Time Dragons devoured time and basically didn't need to eat. But the little Fire Dragon couldn't do without food, and as Fang Zheng traveled, he noticed that most living creatures on the ground had been devoured by the Dragon Horde. He wondered whether any penguins or polar bears had survived in places like the Arctic or Antarctica since Fire Dragons breathed fire and probably wouldn't like those areas.
Luckily, Fire Dragons couldn't swim, so the marine life had been spared. Now, most of Fang Zheng's time each day, apart from traveling, was spent fishing in the sea.
Just like now.
“Thump.”
The huge Black Dragon flapped its wings and landed on the pier. It extended its foreclaw and tossed a small shark onto the ground, then Fang Zheng glanced around and called out loudly,
“Little one, time to eat!”
“Ya–!”
Hearing Fang Zheng's voice, the little Fire Dragon scurried out of the nearby ruins, first cozying up to Fang Zheng and rubbing its head against him, then heading over to the shark. It huffed a breath of fire, roasting the shark until it was half-cooked before opening its mouth and starting to crunch away contentedly.
What a strange little creature.
Watching the little Fire Dragon, Fang Zheng couldn't help but purse his lips. He noticed that this little Fire Dragon seemed different from its kin, not just in the color of its scales. In fact, it was also much smarter than its breed, Fang Zheng observed. The adult Fire Dragons he encountered had the intelligence of ordinary animals, but this little one's intelligence was twice as high–about that of a human child aged three to four years.
Moreover, it had a different way of eating compared to other Fire Dragons who swallowed their food raw. This one knew how to use its flames to cook its meals…
If Fang Zheng hadn't examined its thoughts and confirmed it was indeed just a newly-born little Fire Dragon, he might have suspected it was a soul reborn in the wrong body.
Of course, the little Fire Dragon had its flaws too. It was about one-third smaller than the others of its kind, and Fang Zheng also noticed that its constitution seemed weak; it didn't have the robust armor-like scales of the other Fire Dragons. If it was a human, it would be characterized as sickly and frail.
Perhaps it had an intelligence attribute score of 18 and physical quality of only 3 points?
As Fang Zheng pondered, the little Fire Dragon, now satiated, lifted its head, burped contentedly, exhaled a puff of fire, and then waddled back to Fang Zheng's side. It curled up like a kitten, looking up at him. Fang Zheng let out a helpless chuckle and then stretched out his claw to place a scrapbook in front of the little creature. Seeing the scrapbook, the little Fire Dragon let out an excited cry, pawing through it to admire the pictures inside.
“Found something interesting again?”
“Ya…”
At Fang Zheng's question, the little Fire Dragon lifted its head, called out softly to him, and then looked back at the scrapbook. Fang Zheng had discovered this particular hobby of the little Fire Dragon; much like many children, it seemed to be very interested in colorful illustrations. It had once stared intently at an advertisement board that had miraculously survived a dragon's destruction in the ruins of a city. Later, it somehow found a fashion magazine titled “Lucky to Survive” and had flipped through it for quite a while. It was then that Fang Zheng learned of the little one's hobby. In the spirit of early childhood education, when he went out hunting and slaughtering the Fire Dragon Horde, he would also use spells to search the city ruins for attractive scrapbooks to take back for the little one.
The little one was quite fascinated by these scrapbooks, though it seemed a bit prone to “out with the old, in with the new,” losing interest after finishing one. However, Fang Zheng noticed that the little Fire Dragon wasn't just skimming; it seemed genuinely interested in anything with “patterns.” Whether it be fashion magazines, animated pictures, or even art books, it would peruse each page with relish.
Fang Zheng never imagined he'd end up raising such an eccentric pet.
Looking at the Little Fire Dragon by his side, Fang Zheng was somewhat at a loss for words. After days of investigating the Fire Dragons, he had basically come to understand this species.
All they did was eat and sleep, wake up to breed, and after breeding, eat again. They were like a swarm of locusts, which was why apart from the dry grassland, Fang Zheng hadn't seen any forests in this area. It's likely that even the trees had been gnawed away by these creatures. It was fortunate that Fire Dragons couldn't swim, otherwise the seas might have suffered the same fate.
Compared to them, this Little Fire Dragon was truly an anomaly among anomalies.
But Fang Zheng wondered, how much more Power of Time would he need to “upgrade”?
Thinking of this, Fang Zheng felt a headache coming on. He had traveled through most of Europe, virtually clearing out the Fire Dragon horde, but he could feel that he had only absorbed little more than half of the necessary Power of Time–if it could be compared to something, it was like feeling full but not to the point where one couldn't stuff down any more, unable to pat a round belly and say, “I can't, I just can't eat any more.”
But this wasn't the only thing troubling Fang Zheng.
He didn't harbor any illusions about his luck. Even though the growth of a Time Dragon was “random,” Fang Zheng had never considered the possibility of transforming directly into a Primordial Dragon in a single go. This meant he would likely need many instances of plundering time to achieve his goal. However, the number of Fire Dragons in this world was limited, and Fang Zheng felt that even if he took care of all of them, reaching the level of a Primordial Dragon was unlikely.
For now, though… well, he'd better deal with the problem at hand first and leave future issues for later.
“Hmm?”
Just then, Fang Zheng suddenly looked up, gazing toward the other side of the city ruins. Although it was tens of kilometers away, as someone with the bloodline of the Dragon Race and an Attribute Level that had risen to B+, Fang Zheng could almost immediately sense that on the other side of the ruins, a Fire Dragon was chasing its prey, and what it was chasing was a horse–no, that wasn't right! Because of this, the Little Fire Dragon resting on his back would not fall off no matter how Fang Zheng twisted and turned, because within the flow of time, its position was fixed. As long as Fang Zheng didn't give it the possibility of “falling off his back the next second,” such an outcome wouldn't occur.
In just a few breaths, Fang Zheng had crossed the entire city, and soon he spotted the Fire Dragon hovering in the sky, and not far from it, the figure desperately trying to escape.
It was a human.
Fang Zheng could be sure of this, as the person, wrapped in tattered cloth, was riding a horse at full gallop. Hovering not far above their heads, the Fire Dragon was lingering, ready to attack. It was evident that the person was lucky to have evaded several attacks, but unfortunately, the Fire Dragon seemed set on claiming its prey.
“ROAR–!!”
Finally, the horse, seemingly at its limit, started slowing down. Sensing this, the Fire Dragon let out an enraged roar and dove towards its target. Realizing the danger, the rider spurred the horse, trying to pick up speed to avoid the Fire Dragon's assault. But to the person's surprise, after such a long chase, the horse was utterly exhausted. Now frightened by the Fire Dragon, it let out a piercing neigh, its front legs buckling as it collapsed. The rider reacted quickly; as the horse fell, she deftly rolled to the side, leaping from the saddle and rolling to hide on the ground.
At the same time, scorching flames descended from the sky, turning the horse into charred remains.
