Chapter 994: The Continuously Splitting Maddago
Chapter 994: The Continuously Splitting Maddago
Fenrir's sacrifice immediately paid off. A blinding white light flashed and struck the shadowy figure dead on.
A shrill scream quickly rang out in everyone's ears. Fenrir clutched the bloodstain on his chest and glared fiercely forward. The shadow, hit by the spell beam, crashed into the cabinet beside it, shook its head, and stood up again.
Only then did the Wizards in the room truly see the attacker's appearance. It was a jet-black creature, about half a meter long, resembling a large cat. No, a miniaturized black leopard would be a more accurate description.
It crouched low, emitting a strange hiss at Fenrir and the others. Its blue eyes glinted with a faint light, and its sharp claws were still stained with fresh blood.
What shocked everyone the most was that the "black leopard's" body had been cut in half by the Diffindo spell, but no blood flowed from the wound. Instead, it was rapidly transforming. In just a couple of seconds, the "black leopard" split into two identical individuals right before their eyes.
Seeing this, Fenrir's scalp tingled, and he couldn't help but growl, "What the hell is this thing?"
An Auror in the crowd took a few steps back and explained hesitantly, "This is a Maddago, a very dangerous group-living magical creature. I read about them in a book on magical creatures. These monsters split their bodies when they receive a strong attack, creating more of their kind..."
"But they shouldn't attack Wizards proactively, and their speed shouldn't be this fast..." the Auror added, puzzled.
"Never mind that now. I just want to know if the book mentioned how to deal with them?!" Fenrir interrupted the Auror, his voice rapid. He stared intently at the two Maddagos but didn't dare to make a move, fearing it would worsen the situation.
"Maddagos usually have a strong territorial instinct. As long as you leave their territory, they usually won't pursue you..." the Auror replied instinctively.
Fenrir's face darkened at this. They were trapped here; how could they leave?
"We need a more practical solution!" Fenrir growled.
Before the Auror could speak again, the two crouching Maddagos lunged at them, their speed blurring like shadows.
The two Warlocks at the front immediately waved their wands, casting several invisible Magic Barriers in front of them.
The Maddago on the left, its blue eyes gleaming, didn't slow down. With a powerful leap, it cleared the Magic Barrier and clung to the cabinet's horizontal bar, ducking to avoid two yellow beams flying at it.
But this gave Walker the opportunity he had been waiting for. He swiftly waved his wand, and a dark green beam flashed through the air.
"Avada Kedavra!"
Just as Walker had anticipated, the Killing Curse hit its mark. The Maddago didn't split this time. Its body convulsed and fell from the bar, lying motionless on the ground, lifeless. It then dissolved into a cloud of dark fog, vanishing from sight.
"Nice one!" Fenrir's grim expression finally eased. It seemed the Maddagos weren't as terrifying as he had initially thought, at least not immune to the Killing Curse.
However, Fenrir soon realized that his thoughts had been overly simplistic. After the first Maddago died, the one that had just split off seemed to sense some kind of threat and, without being attacked, spontaneously split into even more individuals. In a moment, four identical Maddagos stood before them.
Several new Maddagos also emerged from the magic cabinet on the right, charging at them from all directions.
The Wizards present all showed signs of alarm, but the Auror suddenly spoke up. "Why don't we try to gather all the individuals in one place and use Fiendfyre to take them out all at once!"
Fenrir felt a glimmer of hope. Although Maddagos had the ability to split continuously, they were not invincible. If they could eliminate all the individuals at once, the Maddagos would no longer be able to split further.
Fiendfyre's powerful devouring ability and self-replicating nature were perfect for dealing with these strange creatures.
With this in mind, Fenrir used the Magic Mark on his wrist to issue orders, directing everyone to launch a counterattack.
The results of their training over the past month quickly became evident, as everyone worked together in perfect harmony.
The twelve Wizards on the scene were divided into three groups. The first group used non-lethal spells like the Slowing Charm and Relaxation Charm to slow down the Maddagos.
The second group continuously cast Shield Charms to create magic barriers, further compressing the Maddagos' movement space and forcing them to deviate from their original attack routes, guiding them to the designated positions.
Finally, Walker and his team combined their efforts to cast Fiendfyre, forming a large ring of fire that trapped all the Maddagos inside.
"Right now, everyone, cast together and take them out in one go!" To ensure the spell's potency, Fenrir rallied all the Wizards to cast Fiendfyre together.
The flames immediately expanded, pressing inward.
Piercing screams echoed through the Department of Mysteries as the Maddagos struggled in the inferno, their bodies twisting and splitting into new individuals. However, this only fueled the ferocity of the Fiendfyre, the scarlet flames rising high and engulfing all the Maddagos.
After consuming all the Maddagos, the Fiendfyre had grown several times larger. Fenrir glanced at the Aurors, and they all waved their wands in unison, directing the Fiendfyre to condense and transform into a dragon that slammed into the towering magic cabinets ahead. A deafening explosion followed.
When the dust settled, the scene before them revealed the collapsed cabinets, with the scarlet Fiendfyre licking at the scattered debris—they had blasted a path forward.
Seeing this, Fenrir and his team immediately worked to suppress the scattered Fiendfyre.
This terrifying Dark Magic, while incredibly powerful, was extremely difficult to control.
If the Fiendfyre were to spread throughout the Department of Mysteries, none of them would survive.
Walker wiped the cold sweat from his forehead, looking cautiously around. Seeing no new shadows emerging to attack, he breathed a sigh of relief and turned to Fenrir. "Where's President Hals? Have you informed him of the situation here?"
