Chapter 993: The Battle in the Department of Mysteries
Chapter 993: The Battle in the Department of Mysteries
"Stupefy!"
"Petrificus!"
"Expelliarmus!"
...
Brilliant spell beams zipped through the hallway, instantly knocking down several unprepared French Aurors. Fenrir casually cast a binding spell on them and led the main group straight into the deepest part of the underground.
The journey was smoother than anyone expected. The suddenness of the attack likely caught the opposition off guard. They encountered virtually no resistance and quickly breached the Department of Mysteries.
However, the scene inside was unexpected. The Department of Mysteries was completely unguarded. All they could see were countless seven-meter-tall, long, rectangular magic cabinets standing in front of them, layer upon layer, stretching endlessly. They had stumbled into a giant maze.
Fenrir sensed something was amiss, but before he could react, a dull rumbling echoed throughout the Ministry of Magic. Walker, who was at the back, turned around and saw that their escape route had vanished. The open door had transformed into a gray wall.
It's a trap! Everyone immediately realized this.
No wonder the Ministry of Magic's defenses hadn't been activated during their assault. Fenrir had initially thought their surprise attack was effective, catching the guards off guard.
Now it was clear that the opposition had been deliberate, luring them into this place...
Fenrir's face turned grim, but it was too late. The black and white tiles beneath their feet suddenly collapsed. Fenrir, the quickest to react, rolled forward, narrowly avoiding the fall.
The others weren't as fortunate. Three unfortunate Aurors, reacting a split second too late, fell through. Two others had their feet trapped in the cracks of the broken tiles.
Fenrir quickly scanned the area, intending to send someone to help, but the tiles were collapsing faster and faster. Dozens of massive, rectangular magic cabinets were hurtling toward them.
"Confringo!" Fenrir and his companions cast the Exploding Spell repeatedly. Over a hundred Explosion Charms detonated, shattering many of the approaching cabinets.
However, these cabinets were incredibly sturdy and numerous. Only a small portion was destroyed by the explosions, while the rest broke through their hastily erected magic barriers and charged forward.
Fenrir's face darkened. He decided not to stand his ground and instead yanked the nearest trapped Auror free, pulling him to safety as they rolled to avoid the oncoming cabinets.
The massive, heavy cabinets swept past Fenrir and his group, the force of the wind causing sharp pains on their backs. Two Aurors, caught off guard, were knocked flying, their fates unknown.
Fenrir quickly got back to his feet, his expression terrifyingly grim. It wasn't just the loss of two comrades that troubled him; they were now surrounded on all sides by the massive magic cabinets.
Some of the group felt the ground beneath them rising rapidly, while others felt it descending. Clearly, the opposition intended to split their hundred-strong team, and it appeared they had succeeded.
Even if they managed to destroy the magic cabinets in front of them, the height difference would prevent them from quickly rejoining the others.
"Everyone, be careful!" Fenrir held his wand horizontally in front of him, loudly warning the remaining dozen Aurors, who quickly formed groups and stood back-to-back, vigilantly scanning their surroundings.
Suddenly, a sharp, piercing cry echoed through the Department of Mysteries. Fenrir looked up sharply, spotting a black shadow darting over several magic cabinets, moving so fast he could barely see it.
Just as everyone's attention was split, the cabinet on the right suddenly burst open, and another black shadow shot out, its sharp claws slashing towards the face of one of the Aurors. Distracted, the Auror had no time to react, and soon deep, bloody gashes appeared on his face.
"Ah!!!" The unfortunate Auror clutched his face, screaming in pain. His colleagues quickly moved to protect him, pulling him to the center where a healer could provide emergency treatment.
Fenrir, naturally, noticed his injured comrade, his face dark as a thundercloud. Since they had entered, they hadn't encountered a single opposing Wizard and were being toyed with, even being separated from the others.
Fenrir knew he was largely to blame for this situation. The initial advance had been too smooth, making him underestimate the defenses, leading them straight into this trap.
Under normal circumstances, he should have sent a small advance team first...
But now that it had happened, wallowing in regret was pointless. Concerned for the safety of the other Aurors, Fenrir chose the most direct and violent approach.
"Everyone, cast protective charms and smash these cabinets!" Fenrir shouted, waving his wand and blasting the magic cabinets blocking their path.
In fact, before he even gave the order, the surrounding Aurors had already cast Protego on themselves. They then followed Fenrir's command, casting spells to blow open the cabinets in front of them.
However, these cabinets, designed to hold special items, were made of highly resistant materials, and their anti-magic properties were strong. Without the combined effort of a hundred Wizards, their spells had limited effect, only managing to create a few large holes. What made them gasp in shock was the sight of even more massive cabinets, layer upon layer, continuously shifting positions through the holes.
Several black shadows, like ghosts, darted out from these cabinets, moving at an unimaginable speed towards them. Their clawed hands, sharp as blades, sliced through the air, striking like assassins, touching and retreating without a moment's hesitation.
Despite the Wizards' pre-cast protective charms, which prevented anyone from being injured in the first wave, the sudden attack by these mysterious, hidden monsters, whose faces they couldn't see, added immense pressure to everyone's minds.
Fenrir knew they couldn't continue like this. During the second attack, he didn't dodge or evade but relied on Protego to block it.
Because the attacks came in quick succession, Fenrir didn't have time to reinforce his Protego. After a brief resistance, the sharp claws broke through the protection and deeply embedded themselves in his chest, leaving several red, bloody gashes.
Fenrir grunted, using the slight pause to track the movement of the attacker. Predicting its path, he swiftly moved his wand, aiming at the black shadow, and a white light shot from the tip.
