Chapter 992: The Siege
Chapter 992: The Siege
September 25, 2017
Youzhou, Daiding Prefecture, Yang Yuan City.
Zhang Yan's arrogant demeanor, which had been so bold, was immediately dampened by the mere mention of Lu HaiKong's legion before it even arrived.
However, this wasn't necessarily a bad thing for Zhang Yan. If she had continued with her haughty attitude towards Lu HaiKong, her fate would have been grim.
The mere name of Warlord Zhang was enough to make her reconsider her approach, and it was actually a blessing in disguise.
Before Lu HaiKong's army arrived, Zhang Yan, now more cautious, began her preparations in earnest. She dispatched scouts to gather intelligence on Lu HaiKong's forces while simultaneously reinforcing Yang Yuan City's defenses, regardless of whether their opponent was Warlord Zhang or not. It was always better to be prepared.
However, in terms of defense, Zhang Yan didn't have much to reinforce.
The city's original commander, Zhang Yan, had already fortified Yang Yuan City like an iron fortress.
All necessary defensive equipment and combat supplies were in place, and every detail was meticulously attended to. At this point, Zhang Yan couldn't think of anything more to add to the defenses.
This situation was a relief for Zhang Yan, as she couldn't believe that Lu HaiKong could breach such a well-prepared fortress, even if she didn't know what more to add.
At this moment, Zhang Yan hoped that Warlord Zhang was indeed their opponent. If Lu HaiKong used his secret weapon against them and they could withstand Warlord Zhang's assault, then Lu HaiKong's forces would be in grave danger.
Zhang Yan was curious to see how Lu HaiKong would defend against Dong Zhuo's army on the other side.
With the city's defenses well-prepared, Zhang Yan shifted her focus to gathering intelligence.
As the saying goes, "Know yourself and your enemy, and you shall win a hundred battles."
If she could gather more information about Lu HaiKong's legion, it would not only benefit her in the upcoming battle but also provide significant assistance to Dong Zhuo and Baron Yuan.
Despite her best efforts, Zhang Yan struggled to gather any useful intelligence. She could only ascertain that Lu HaiKong's legion was highly elite, but the extent of their prowess eluded her.
Just as Zhang Yan was considering alternative methods of intelligence gathering, Lu HaiKong's legion arrived at Yang Yuan City earlier than expected.
Upon receiving this news, Zhang Yan was startled. She immediately climbed the city walls with her generals to get a better view. From the walls of Yang Yuan City, she caught her first glimpse of the legion sent to subjugate them.
The sight of the legion caused Zhang Yan's expression to change.
Although she wasn't an expert in warfare, she had some battlefield experience. She knew that the army before her was undoubtedly the most elite legion she had ever seen.
The legion wasn't particularly large, divided into three formations. As they reached the base of the city walls, Zhang Yan's appraisal skills activated, allowing her to assess the attributes of the soldiers.
Due to the formation's arrangement, Zhang Yan could only see the front two thousand Light Armor Guards, formerly known as Mountain Bandit Guards.
Two thousand Light Armor Guards were already an elite force, and behind them were additional formations: a five-thousand-strong archer unit and another legion of similar size. Behind them, approximately two thousand support troops were setting up camp.
The legion was small, numbering only five thousand, but they were incredibly elite and adorned with extravagant equipment.
As Lu HaiKong's neighbor, Zhang Yan was somewhat familiar with his military and economic prowess, so she wasn't intimidated by the lavishly equipped legion.
However, Zhang Yan furrowed her brows, as she hadn't yet seen the legion's commander. Upon reaching Yang Yuan City, the legion halted abruptly.
Zhang Yan had expected the legion's commander to issue a challenge or some form of provocation, but they remained silent and stationary.
Not only did they stop, but they boldly set up camp and assembled siege equipment just outside the range of the city's defensive apparatus, as if the defenses were non-existent.
Observing the legion below, a cold glint flashed in Zhang Yan's eyes. "Guan Hai, Zhou Cang, and Tie Chui!"
"At your command!" Three powerful voices responded, and three figures emerged from the crowd.
"Go and remind them whose territory this is!"
"Yes!"
The three figures bowed in unison and, after a quick salute, descended from the city walls. They opened the gates and mounted their warhorses, charging towards Lu HaiKong's legion.
Interestingly, all three of their mounts were exotic warhorses, and each one had been purchased from Lu HaiKong.
Riding the warhorses purchased from Lu HaiKong's side, they charged at Lu HaiKong's Legion, creating a rather interesting scene.
As the three emerged, a terrifying aura burst forth from their bodies simultaneously, an aura unique to martial generals with a strength of 90 and above.
As Guan Hai galloped forward, his heart swelled with pride, and he roared, "Who dares to fight me!"
His shout thundered like a clap of thunder, echoing for miles, and combined with Guan Hai's aura, it was awe-inspiring. These three tiger-like generals seemed determined to charge through Lu HaiKong's legion formation.
However, before they could even get close to Lu HaiKong's legion, the legion's archers sprang into action.
The five thousand Cloud Piercing Archers, well-trained, simultaneously drew their bows and unleashed their unique unit ability. Five thousand arrows shot forth in unison, creating a dense and precise rain of arrows that showered down upon the three generals.
This sudden arrow barrage left Zhang Yan's side completely dumbfounded.
Zhang Yan had sent Guan Hai and the others to challenge Lu HaiKong's generals.
Without knowing the martial general lineup of this legion, she could only use this method to test Lu HaiKong's martial general arrangement.
According to her estimation, this legion of Lu HaiKong should not have top-tier generals like Dian Wei, as Dong Zhuo's legion was about to launch an attack, and those elite generals would be needed to defend against Dong Zhuo. At most, there would be a few generals with a strength of 90 or above, which was already impressive.
So, Zhang Yan was prepared to witness a one-sided battle, but to her surprise, after they boldly assumed the classic dueling stance, Lu HaiKong didn't play along with the duel and instead greeted them with a rain of arrows.
"Despicable!"
As the dense rain of arrows approached, Guan Hai let out an angry shout. He brandished his long knife, and a phantom image flashed behind him. At the same time, the three generals' inner energy surged, and a fierce energy shield enveloped each of them.
In the 619 version of the book, it's all correct!
"Mere arrows, and you think you can stop us?"
After the energy shields appeared, Guan Hai, leading the other two, became incredibly arrogant.
They intended to charge through the rain of arrows, but as soon as they entered the arrow's coverage area, before the arrows even fell, their faces changed.
"Not good! These arrows are strange, retreat!"
The three pulled on the reins, stopping in disarray, and immediately turned around, frantically retreating beyond the arrow's range.
Pfft, pfft, pfft!
Almost simultaneously with their retreat, the rain of arrows landed on the ground not far in front of them.
The five thousand arrows, like hot knives through butter, easily pierced the ground, leaving small holes.
Witnessing this, Guan Hai and the others gasped.
These arrows were not ordinary; each one was elite-level equipment, and they carried the additional power of the unit ability. Their destructive force was extraordinary.
Fortunately, they reacted quickly and retreated in time. If they had foolishly charged forward, they might have lost their lives or, at the very least, suffered severe injuries.
Of course, if Guan Hai and the others were wearing legendary armor, the situation might have been different, but unfortunately, they weren't equipped with such gear.
So, at this moment, they could only stare at the archer legion, not daring to take a single step beyond the safety line.
Although this situation was infuriating, Zhang Yan heaved a sigh of relief. In her opinion, Lu HaiKong's legion using such a tactic clearly indicated that they lacked capable generals, which was excellent news for her side, as it meant their battle would be much easier.
However, while Zhang Yan was relieved, Guan Hai was furious. Gazing at the opposing legion, he exploded in anger.
"Despicable cowards! You dare not face me in a one-on-one duel, and now you resort to such underhanded tactics!"
Initially, no one in Lu HaiKong's legion paid attention to Guan Hai's roar, and the archers were already preparing for a second round of attacks.
Guan Hai continued his tirade, "What kind of 'Lu HaiKong' is he? What kind of 'Top Warrior of the World' is he? I spit on him! He's nothing but a cowardly turtle who lives off others, and his generals are a bunch of spineless cowards!"
As Guan Hai spoke, a shiver ran down his spine, and the hair on his body stood on end. Instinctively, he sidestepped.
"Boom!"
Almost at the moment Guan Hai sidestepped, a massive explosion sounded. A flying iron spear hurtled towards Guan Hai's original position, creating a pit about two meters in diameter.
Simultaneously, a terrifying aura, akin to a ghost or a god, surged from Lu HaiKong's camp.
Then, a robust figure emerged, riding a yellowish-brown warhorse through the crowd. Who else could it be but Dian Wei?
"You wanted a duel, didn't you? Here's your chance!"
