Chapter 99: Mahayana Perfect Enlightenment Root Sutra
Chapter 99: Mahayana Perfect Enlightenment Root Sutra
Jiangxi Shixiu, practitioners of the Path of Profound Joy in Quiescence, have managed to maintain their secluded existence rather than being forced into exile overseas. This alone proves the strength of their lineage.
Unlike the Sword Pavilion or Holy Sect, which possess numerous mystical abilities, Jiangxi Shixiu’s cultivation techniques and powers are inseparable. They cultivate nothing else but a single sutra—The Mahayana Perfect Enlightenment Root Sutra—from which all their techniques and abilities are derived.
This sutra is said to have been transmitted by the World-Honored One of the Path of Profound Joy in Quiescence. Its purpose is to guide beings toward virtue, achieve nirvana through cessation, and seek the “True Self.” Yet this “True Self” is not the practitioner’s own essence but the “I” of the World-Honored One.
When the Path of Profound Joy in Quiescence is cultivated to its extreme, one’s self is extinguished, realizing the truth: “I am the World-Honored One, and the World-Honored One is me.” From this, one becomes indistinguishable from the World-Honored One. The sutra calls this “becoming a Buddha,” or “right awakening.”
Since the World-Honored One is a Buddha, becoming the World-Honored One equates to becoming a Buddha oneself. All beings share this potential—“I” am Buddha, so all beings can become “me.” To grasp this truth is to attain supreme enlightenment.
Within The Mahayana Perfect Enlightenment Root Sutra lie forty-eight great mantras, each forged by the World-Honored One upon attaining the Dao. Every mantra holds infinite mysteries, capable of generating countless abilities. A complete mantra rivals the supreme divine abilities of the Sword Pavilion or Holy Sect. The more mantras one masters, the closer one draws to “becoming a Buddha.”
Faced with Lv Yang’s Yanmo Hall, Prostrate Dragon Arhat strikes the ground with a mudra, unleashing one of these mantras: No Three Evil Realms in the Land.
“If I become a Buddha, and there still exist hell, hungry ghosts, or animals in my land, I shall not attain supreme enlightenment.”
The chant roars like thunder, radiating brilliant light. Though a mantra of compassion, its power is merciless. How does one eradicate hell, hungry ghosts, and animals? By killing them—by erasing them entirely.
This ability especially suppresses negative energies. As the light descends, Lv Yang watches Yanmo Hall crumble. Su Nu, anchoring its power, shrieks in agony.
This is the might of mid-stage Foundation Building!
Lv Yang’s heart tightens. While Yanmo Hall dominates against souls like the Heaven-Mending Peak Master, it gains an unfair advantage in such cases. True mid-stage Foundation Building—where spirit and flesh reach perfection, as in Prostrate Dragon Arhat’s peak condition—renders even a single ability overwhelming. Without the endless negative energy from Skull Mountain’s ley lines, Yanmo Hall would have already shattered.
“Amitabha.”
At this sight, Prostrate Dragon Arhat’s expression remains calm. They hurl their Nine-Ringed Tin Staff into the air, unleashing a thunderous clang like clashing metal.
“Danger!”
Lv Yang’s pupils contract. Yanmo Hall, suppressed by Prostrate Dragon Arhat’s No Three Evil Realms mantra, teeters on collapse, leaving him vulnerable.
Lv Yang fails to anticipate the shift, but Prostrate Dragon Arhat, with greater cultivation, seizes the moment. Before Yanmo Hall falls, they summon the Nine-Ringed Tin Staff. As the hall collapses, they strike—leaving Lv Yang no chance to recover.
In an instant, the staff hurtles toward Lv Yang’s face!
At the last moment, Lv Yang snatches Su Nu from Yanmo Hall, shielding her with his body.
Boom!
Su Nu never even cries out. Her body cracks violently, saved only by her Foundation Building cultivator’s durable false form.
“This can’t continue!”
Lv Yang tosses Su Nu back into his dantian, mind racing. Staying on the defensive spells defeat.
As he strategizes, Prostrate Dragon Arhat denies him time. The Nine-Ringed Tin Staff, missing once, arcs in the air and strikes again. The staff’s nine rings clatter, their ringing enough to shatter souls.
Thankfully, Lv Yang has refined the Mental Severance Heavenly Silkworm Secret. His spiritual awareness has evolved into divine consciousness, matching a Foundation Building cultivator’s. Though the staff’s vibrations split his head with pain, he endures, channeling his willpower. Using Su Nu to bolster his mid-stage Foundation Building status, he forms a hand seal.
The staff strikes again.
“Corpse Liberation is the transformation of form—the refinement of one’s true essence, the metamorphosis of the body!”
Lv Yang offers no resistance, letting the staff shatter his flesh into crimson mist.
Yet the next moment, the mist recoils!
His pulverized body flees hundreds of miles, reforming at Skull Mountain’s edge. The damage to his soul and body vanishes with Corpse Liberation. Even Prostrate Dragon Arhat’s divine consciousness lock breaks.
“What a remarkable escape technique!” Prostrate Dragon Arhat murmurs, impressed.
This is the Corpse Liberation Immortal ability—not a combat art but a disaster-avoidance technique. Enhanced by mid-stage Foundation Building, its subtlety astounds.
“Let’s prolong this a little longer.”
Lv Yang exhales deeply, releasing his concealed heavenly fate. Those bound to him by karmic ties will sense his peril.
Chongguang Zhenren will surely detect it.
And Lv Yang still holds the Celestial Corpse Miasma, something True Man Yinshan desires. For that alone, Chongguang Zhenren and True Man Yinshan will come.
He need only hold out until aid arrives.
As this thought forms, Prostrate Dragon Arhat sighs. “Pity. I had hoped to preserve your physical form.”
Before the words fade, they clasp their hands.
“Amitabha!”
A radiant light erupts from their crown, illuminating the heavens. The Subduing Dragon Temple behind them erupts with bell chimes.
Within the light, a colossal dragon, ablaze with white-hot flames, coils around Prostrate Dragon Arhat. The dragon’s head merges with theirs, and together they exhale a torrent of fire.
Hiss!
The blazing beam strikes Lv Yang. The inferno reduces him to ash in an eyeblink.
Yet moments later, the ashes regroup, reforming his body.
This time, even with Corpse Liberation, embers cling to him like parasites. Worse, the flames threaten to reignite.
“This is… the Blazing Inferno Dragon?”
Months have passed since his battle with the Heaven-Mending Peak Master. Now versed in Wugui Sect’s teachings, Lv Yang understands Foundation Building far better.
He recognizes this as Prostrate Dragon Arhat’s Dao manifest.
“The Blazing Inferno Dragon belongs to the Celestial Pole Position’s Yufen, a pure yang wood essence. Its towering form burns with celestial fire—wood feeds the flames, and fire rides the dragon’s might.”
In short, the raging fire Prostrate Dragon Arhat exhales is merely an illusion. The true power lies in earth nurturing wood, wood fueling fire. Any ability countering fire will prove futile against this Blazing Inferno Dragon.
“To break it, I need metal… or…”
As Lv Yang’s mind races, Prostrate Dragon Arhat strides toward him, smiling with certainty.
“Will the cultivator now surrender?”
