Chapter 99: A Race to Buy
Chapter 99: A Race to Buy
Mr. Zhou understood that all the money his son earned was managed by his daughter-in-law.
Good, the money a man earns should go to his wife. That's how a family prospers.
However, he was truly surprised that the couple had over ten thousand in savings. It seemed his son had only contributed seven thousand, with the rest brought in by his daughter-in-law.
Mr. Zhou, who also had only one yuan in his pocket, patted his son's shoulder in sympathy. "Listen to your wife, and we'll prosper!"
But then he turned to Jiang Xia. "Thirteen thousand plus my one thousand still leaves us short by four thousand. It's quite a risk."
Jiang Xia replied, "We don't need your money, Dad. We can earn it ourselves, but it is a bit risky."
Mr. Zhou sighed. "Two months is too short. Earning four or five thousand in two months is tough, even if we have good luck every time we go out to sea. Luck is unpredictable, though."
Zhou Chenglei explained to Jiang Xia, "That's why I was thinking of buying a smaller boat first and putting down a seven-thousand deposit, keeping some money in reserve."
In the past, he wouldn't have hesitated to buy the boat, but now, with Jiang Xia, he didn't want her to live a life of frugality.
He wanted her to have plenty of money at her disposal, to buy whatever she wanted, to live a life without worry.
But he couldn't bring himself to say these things to Jiang Xia in front of his father.
Just as Jiang Xia was about to speak, Mr. Zhou, the factory manager, walked out. "Have you made a decision? The guard just called to say an old customer has arrived with news."
Jiang Xia saw the guard leading a group of people closer.
One of the men, before he even approached, shouted at the factory manager, "Factory Manager Zhou, we want that boat! We can pay the deposit right away, or even the full price if you prefer!"
Jiang Xia noticed the man's thick gold chain and large gold ring, a clear sign of his wealth and confidence.
Factory Manager Zhou smiled and replied, "Boss Guo, you're a little late. I need to see if these comrades are interested first."
The wealthy Boss Guo glanced at Zhou Chenglei and Jiang Xia, then at Mr. Zhou, trying to gauge their financial situation. "Are you buying?"
Zhou Chenglei was about to speak, but Jiang Xia grabbed his hand and said, "We're buying!"
Jiang Xia had thought it through. They had over ten thousand yuan, and while there was some risk, they had two months to earn the rest. It was worth the gamble!
After all, why pass up a good deal?
Jiang Xia looked at Zhou Chenglei, her fingertips gently touching his palm. "Buy?"
Zhou Chenglei couldn't resist her. He tightened his grip on her mischievous hand.
She had already said they were buying. How could he say no in front of everyone, embarrassing her?
As a husband, he would always stand by her.
He didn't want her to live a life of frugality, but what he gave her had to be what she truly wanted for her to be happy. Zhou Chenglei wasn't that dense.
He turned to Factory Manager Zhou. "Factory Manager Zhou, we've decided to buy the boat. However, we didn't bring much money today. We have three thousand on us. Can we come back in a few days to pay the deposit?"
Mr. Zhou, seeing the couple holding hands, felt less worried. They had three months, and with a loving couple, they could easily earn a few thousand.
Buy it!
If they couldn't earn the money, they could always find a partner. Why pass up such a great deal on a large boat?
Boss Guo had brought a few boat workers with him. Hearing Zhou Chenglei's words, one of them couldn't help but speak up. "Coming with only three thousand to buy a boat? You must be planning to buy a small fishing boat. As far as we know, that boat costs over eighteen thousand. Are you sure you can afford the rest of the payment after the deposit?"
Another man opened a canvas bag, revealing several stacks of large bills, and gave Zhou Chenglei a challenging look. "Factory Manager Zhou, our boss came as soon as he heard the news and brought the full payment! They only brought three thousand, clearly not enough. They’ll have to go back and scrape together the rest. Don't waste our time. Sell the boat to us!"
"Yeah, Factory Manager Zhou, sell the boat to our boss! He can pay the full price right away! Talking about coming back in a few days to pay the deposit is just an excuse to gather the money. They only have three thousand now, and they still need over ten thousand. It’s not that easy to come up with that much."
“
If you don’t have the money, get a smaller boat. If you don’t have a big head, don’t wear a big hat!”
Boss Guo waited until his boat workers had finished speaking before he said, “Alright, that’s enough from you lot! Even Factory Manager Zhou can’t get a word in! Factory Manager, sell me the boat!”
Factory Manager Zhou was a man of principles and technical expertise. He had just spent a long time talking with Zhou Chenglei and found him quite impressive. He replied, “We should always respect the order of things. Since these comrades intend to buy the boat, it should be sold to them.”
The boat workers wanted to protest, but Boss Guo silenced them with a glare.
Boss Guo glanced at Zhou Chenglei and his companions, then smiled at Factory Manager Zhou. “You’re right, Factory Manager!”
Factory Manager Zhou smiled. “If there’s another good deal like this in the future, I’ll be sure to let you know first, Boss Guo.”
Boss Guo smiled back. “Alright, thanks, Factory Manager. We’ll be on our way then.”
He then gave his men a look, and the boat workers glared at Zhou Chenglei and his companions before leaving.
Zhou Chenglei met their gazes with a cool, calm look.
Jiang Xia turned to Factory Manager Zhou. “Thank you, Factory Manager. We’ll put down a deposit of three thousand now. The remaining seven thousand, we’ll pay in full within three days.”
Factory Manager Zhou didn’t want to deal with the hassle of a deposit and receipts, and if they couldn’t come up with the money, he’d have to refund them, which would be a pain to account for. He said, “No need. I said I’ll give you three days, so I’ll give you three days. Just bring the full amount within three days to complete the purchase. No need to pay the deposit now.”
Jiang Xia wasn’t entirely comfortable with this. She joked, “We should still pay the three thousand deposit! What if someone else comes with a higher offer? It would be unfair to ask you to hold the boat for us for three days without any payment. This factory is so big; it’s possible that one of the workers’ relatives might want to buy it. If we pay the deposit now, you can show them the receipt, and they won’t have a leg to stand on. You won’t have to offend anyone by turning them down.”
Factory Manager Zhou laughed, a bit exasperated. She didn’t trust him, but he had given his word for three days.
However, her words made sense, and he couldn’t really be upset because it was a possibility. After all, he had spread the word, and the boat was a great deal. Many people would likely come forward in the next few days.
He had encountered similar situations before, and Jiang Xia’s suggestion gave him a useful idea for the future.
“Alright, you can pay the three thousand deposit,” he agreed.
He then turned to Zhou Chenglei. “You’ve got a sharp wife there!”
Zhou Chenglei smiled and squeezed Jiang Xia’s hand.
The three of them returned to the office, paid the three thousand deposit, and received a receipt from Factory Manager Zhou.
Just as they were about to leave, the office phone rang. Factory Manager Zhou answered it, and Jiang Xia and her companions said their goodbyes, leaving the factory with their receipt, feeling quite pleased.
Zhou’s father was the happiest of all!
As they reached the factory gate, they saw a black car parked outside. Two foreigners stepped out of the car.
