Chapter 98: What Are You Thinking About, I Said Galleons!
Chapter 98: What Are You Thinking About, I Said Galleons!
"Dawgter!"
Before Dawgter could finish his sentence, Asia walked out of the Basement, interrupting him. Her low voice carried a hint of anger.
"Alright, alright, I get it. Those are things from the past." Dawgter didn't really want to bring up these old matters, as they always reminded him of things that made him upset.
Dawgter's abrupt change in tone left Ivan completely confused.
What's going on?
As Ivan was silently guessing, Asia threw a book at him, hitting him on the head.
"Focus on your studies and stop asking irrelevant questions", Asia said, glaring at him angrily before turning to Dawgter.
"Do you have what I need?"
"Of course, but it wasn't easy to get. I had to find a box to contain it, and it took a lot of effort to have it delivered here."
Dawgter grinned, continuing to complain, but then he changed his tone, patting his chest and saying that if he could be of help, the trouble was worth it.
Asia had no interest in his rambling and tossed the bag in her right hand to him.
"Is this enough?"
"Look what you’re saying, I just lent a small hand, it’s not a transaction", Dawgter said with a flattering smile, catching the bag and then tossing it onto the counter, gesturing for Ivan to put it away.
The bag wasn’t large and made a light sound when it hit the wooden counter, but inside, there was a continuous clinking of metal.
Ivan guessed that the bag had been expanded internally and its weight reduced. Peeking inside the loosely tied opening, he saw a gleaming pile of Galleons, quite a large number.
Ivan understood from their conversation that the amount of Galleons needed must mean that Dawgter had acquired a Dementor.
At this thought, Ivan couldn’t help but look at the middle-aged man with newfound respect. A former Deputy Head of St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, and he still had such skills.
Ivan didn’t touch the bag Dawgter had left on the table, knowing his mother Asia’s character—she never accepted help without a reason.
Dawgter also understood this and sighed, trying to persuade her.
"I received a message a few days ago that the Ministry of Magic is planning a major operation to crack down on Dark Magic Items. Minister Fudge is determined this time, even searching the estates of pure-blood Wizard families. While it’s unlikely they’ll come to Knockturn Alley, it will still affect business."
Hearing this, Ivan recalled that in the original story, there was indeed a large-scale search before Harry’s second year at Hogwarts.
Even the Malfoy Family was affected, having to find ways to dispose of the Horcrux Diary. This search by the Ministry was no small matter.
Asia’s expression changed. If the Ministry really did this, there would likely be no major business deals for the next few months.
After all, those who could afford magical items were mostly wealthy pure-blood families. Relying on the poor in Knockturn Alley for sales was unrealistic.
Despite this, Asia insisted.
"I’ll find a way to handle it. You should keep the money."
Seeing Asia’s determination, Dawgter had no choice but to put the bag of Galleons back in his pocket and then shamelessly stayed for lunch.
This time, Asia didn’t refuse, but Ivan was quite frustrated, as Dawgter kept trying to get close to him, seemingly using him to get closer to Asia.
Ivan searched his memory and found that Dawgter had always been like this, never hiding his feelings for Asia.
Of course, Asia had never hidden her lack of interest in him, but he persisted anyway.
By the afternoon, Ivan still couldn’t get rid of the middle-aged man, as the Dementor for practicing the Patronus Charm was kept at Dawgter’s house, which was said to be inconvenient to move.
Dawgter suggested that if Ivan planned to do something with the Dementor, he could come to his house, where it would be safer with his supervision.
Asia agreed and then shooed Ivan and Dawgter out of the Dark Magic Shop.
"So, the Dementor is for little Ivan?" Dawgter’s expression was quite strange, as he thought Asia might need it for some dark magic experiment.
"I’m using it to learn the Patronus Charm. What else?" Ivan shrugged.
"If I had known you needed it, I would have moved the box", Dawgter muttered to himself.
Ivan naturally saw through Dawgter’s intentions and was speechless. He didn’t want to spend the afternoon with this old man.
As soon as they stepped out, Dawgter took out a flask from his sleeve and started drinking. He only refrained from drinking in front of Asia to maintain his image, but with Ivan, he couldn’t resist.
Dawgter’s house wasn’t far, just across a small alley. It was in a secluded area with almost no other buildings, only some trees and weeds. A dusty sign leaned against the side of the house, with a few words sketched on it.
St. Mungo’s Hospital
Ivan’s expression was odd. If he remembered correctly, the magical hospital was called St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.
Removing two words and still hanging the sign, what a bold move.
It’s a wonder no one has come after him all these years.
At the door, Ivan noticed someone waiting there. It was a male wizard in his thirties, wearing a very old and worn Wizard robe, with deep-set eyes and a hand that was subtly emitting black mist.
A Werewolf?
Ivan’s expression hardened, and his right hand subtly gripped his Wand. It had only been a few days since the battle, and he hadn’t forgotten the silver-furred Werewolf whose left hand had been hit by dark magic.
The unkempt Wizard didn’t seem to have any hostile intentions. He walked up to Dawgter, pulled up his sleeve, and revealed a hand that was pitted and corroded, looking quite strange.
"Can it be saved?" the Wizard asked.
Dawgter had been drinking, but it didn’t affect his judgment. After examining the hand for a moment, he spread his fingers.
"Only five days?" the Wizard asked after a moment of silence.
"I mean, a total of five hundred Galleons", Dawgter said irritably.
