Chapter 98: Thoughts on Taking Disciples (45)
Chapter 98: Thoughts on Taking Disciples (45)
As Kushina lifted the lid off the dish, something magical happened. A reddish glow seemed to emanate from the food, but as she and Minato peered closer, it seemed more like an illusion, with the cuisine's vibrant red color deceiving their eyes.
Kushina swallowed, feeling her mouth water at the sight of the fiery mapo tofu. "Muyu, you didn't tell me you'd be using so much spice. It looks incredibly spicy!"
She had expected Muyu to add just a single chili pepper, but the vibrant red color of the tofu suggested that spice was the primary focus of this dish.
"This dish is indeed a little spicy," Muyu acknowledged, "but it's not just about the heat. There's also a blend of aromatic, numbing, crispy, and tingly flavors."
Minato, intrigued by the mention of multiple flavors, was the first to scoop a generous portion into his mouth.
"Spicy!" The initial sensation that overwhelmed him was the heat of the dish. It was a unique kind of spiciness, one that Muyu might describe as mild but felt intense to Minato.
The spiciness was so intense that Minato felt as if he had stepped into a world engulfed in flames, with fiery eruptions all around him.
But beyond the spice, the mapo tofu offered a complex blend of flavors. Soon, Minato found himself immersed in a culinary delight as the various tastes exploded in his mouth.
"Delicious!" he exclaimed with genuine praise.
He quickly scooped several more spoonfuls of tofu into his bowl, eager to continue savoring the dish.
Seeing Minato's enthusiastic response, Kushina knew that the dish must be exceptional. She, too, took a bite and experienced the complex flavors—the numbing spiciness, the aroma, and even the hint of meat among the ingredients.
"It's truly delicious!" she agreed, quickly reaching for the spoon to take her own generous servings.
Despite the heat, the dish was irresistibly tasty, and Kushina found herself unable to stop her hand from reaching for more.
After the meal, the magical mapo tofu remained a topic of conversation. When Muyu mentioned the ingredients used, Kushina asked, "Muyu, did you forget an ingredient? Weren't there meat flavors, too?"
Kushina distinctly remembered tasting something that resembled meat.
"There's no meat in the ingredients," Muyu replied confidently.
"But I could have sworn I tasted something like meat," Kushina said, perplexed.
"I tasted it too," Minato nodded in agreement.
"It has the flavor of meat," Muyu explained, "but it's not actually meat. It's soybeans that have been specially processed." She then proceeded to explain the principle behind this culinary illusion to the intrigued couple.
"It's incredible!" Kushina exclaimed. "I've never heard of soybeans being used to create such a meat-like flavor."
Minato, too, was amazed by Muyu's culinary prowess. The idea of soybeans mimicking the taste of meat was something entirely new to him.
As Muyu had to leave to train her disciples, she bid farewell to Minato and Kushina, promising to demonstrate the cooking process to them another time.
Arriving at the Southern Forest, Muyu began her daily routine of training her disciples—Itachi, focused on refining his Phoenix Flower Claw technique; Might Guy, working on his physical strength and mastery of the Razor Wind; and Obito, striving to grasp the fundamentals of the Razor Wind.
As their training session drew to a close, Obito asked Muyu, "Teacher Muyu, how does one teach ninjutsu to others?"
"Why do you ask? Who do you want to teach?" Muyu inquired.
"My good friend, Nohara Rin. She's also participating in the summer training camp and is in Group B," Obito shared, recounting the day's events to Muyu. "I feel like I explained it clearly, but Rin still doesn't seem to understand."
Muyu was at a loss for words. From Obito's description, it seemed that his teaching abilities were on par with Naruto's—which meant that instructing others in ninjutsu often entailed little more than a quick demonstration, leaving the learner to figure out the rest on their own.
"You should focus on mastering your own ninjutsu first." Muyue tapped Tobirama's head with his two fingers together.
"Is there nothing the almighty Sage Muyue can do this time?" Tobirama asked, looking down and sounding a little disappointed.
But soon, Tobirama came up with another great idea. If he couldn't teach Nohara Rin, and Muyue couldn't make him a better teacher, then why not have Muyue teach Nohara Rin directly?
"Teacher Muyue, Rin isn't doing well in her studies either. I think she urgently needs your guidance," Tobirama recommended.
Upon hearing Tobirama's suggestion, Muyue fell into deep thought.
Currently, the system only had four disciple slots, and only one was left. It was out of the question to give it to Nohara Rin.
However, she could be accepted as a real-life disciple without being registered in the system.
Muyue pondered for a moment and realized that teaching Nohara Rin had two benefits.
One was that it could further motivate Tobirama to strive harder in his training. The other was that it presented an opportunity to convince Kakashi to become his disciple.
Kakashi, with his S-rank potential and already on a rapid growth trajectory, would be an excellent choice.
"Then go and talk to Rin. If she's willing to learn from me, she's welcome to come," Muyue said.
Hearing Muyue's agreement, Tobirama cheered excitedly.
He had only suggested it out of curiosity, after all, he couldn't force Muyue to teach Nohara Rin.
"As expected, the Sage Muyue is omnipotent!" Tobirama exclaimed in excitement.
Just thinking about being able to train with Nohara Rin in the future thrilled him to no end.
He couldn't wait for time to fast-forward to the next day so he could share this good news with her.
...
The next day, Ebisu arrived at the training ground early in the morning as usual to prepare for his special training.
"Why do I feel like everyone is staring at me?" Ebisu muttered, sensing the gazes from all around.
The last time he had monopolized the promotion list by himself, he had garnered quite a lot of attention. But his poor performance in Group A yesterday shouldn't have drawn any attention.
After all, it was reasonable for him to lose to the original members of Group A, given that he had just been promoted.
"Ebisu, who would've thought that beneath that serious exterior, you're actually such a player," said Kakashi Hatake as he struck Ebisu's chest with his hammer. They were classmates in the sixth grade of the Ninja Academy's fourth year, and they had a good relationship.
Ebisu was puzzled by Kakashi Hatake's words and had no idea what had happened. But his instincts told him that something was amiss.
"If you're free at noon, let me witness this Confusion Technique of yours. I want to challenge my weakness," Hatake Kakashi joked.
"Confusion Technique?" Ebisu had a vague idea of what might have happened, and his heart sank.
"Don't pretend. Is there a need for pretenses between us? Besides, it's already spread among all three groups. There's no point in continuing the act," Hatake Kakashi said.
"So it's just that I developed a rather mature ninjutsu. I just need to boldly admit it," Ebisu said.
"A mature ninjutsu... and everyone in all three groups knows about it..." Ebisu guessed what had happened, and his vision darkened as he nearly fainted.
"It really wasn't me who developed it! I only made a suggestion!" Ebisu felt like his life as a ninja student was coming to an end.
