Chapter 979: Is This What They Call Elites?
Chapter 979: Is This What They Call Elites?
In just three minutes, the majority of the Aurors had been knocked to the ground by Ivan, leaving only a handful of Wizards struggling to hold their ground under his relentless assault.
After the initial skirmish, those still standing were undoubtedly the cream of the crop among the Aurors.
Despite coming from all corners of the world and being largely unfamiliar with one another, they had managed to develop some level of coordination during the brief battle. Working together, they managed to cast spells that barely kept them afloat.
However, they soon realized that this was all just an illusion.
Once Ivan had gauged their strength, he no longer held back. With a light flick of his wand, the broken stones on the ground began to levitate. Some of them formed a barrier in front of him, blocking the incoming spells, while others rapidly transformed and whistled towards the group of Aurors.
"Impedimenta!" The remaining Wizards did not dare to relax for a moment. They all cast spells in unison, and a series of sturdy Magic Barriers appeared in front of them.
Ivan's expression remained unchanged. With a powerful wave of his wand, the flying stones glowed with a fiery red light. Upon impact with the Magic Barriers, they exploded, quickly dispelling the Protective Charms. Several Aurors who were closest were immediately thrown back by the shockwaves.
During the brief lull in the battle, Colin Morton, who had been knocked out by Ivan early in the fight, had just regained consciousness.
Noticing the dire situation, Colin Morton did not rush to get up. He waited until Ivan's back was turned and his attention was focused on the few remaining Aurors before quietly picking up his wand from the ground.
The Aurors still facing Ivan naturally noticed Colin Morton's movement, but none of them showed it on their faces. Instead, they cleverly coordinated with him, waving their wands to cast spells that intersected, attempting to restrict Ivan's movements.
Colin Morton suddenly sat up, raising his wand and aiming directly at Ivan.
Although such a sneak attack might seem dishonorable, Colin Morton often dealt with ruthless Dark Wizards and had never cared much for face or rules.
Sometimes, to get the job done, one had to be even more ruthless and shameless than the Dark Wizards themselves.
However, such a petty trick could not escape Ivan's notice. A cold smile played on his lips as he faced the combined attack of the Aurors without flinching. He raised his wand and shouted loudly:
"Colin Morton, come to me!"
Colin Morton, who had been preparing to strike, suddenly felt an inexplicable force pulling at his body. He was then uncontrollably drawn towards Ivan, his eyes wide with terror as his body collided with the incoming spells.
With a final, defiant roar, poor Colin Morton was once again knocked unconscious.
The Aurors who had initiated the attack were somewhat embarrassed by this turn of events, but Ivan had no intention of letting them off. Seizing the moment when they were momentarily distracted, he lightly flicked his wand, and a wooden chair transformed into a long rope, binding several Aurors together.
Seeing that the battle had ended, Fenrir and the others quickly dropped their Magic Barriers. The onlookers, including the Wizards, took in the sight of over eighty of their comrades lying on the ground, all of them involuntarily drawing in a sharp breath.
They might have thought Ivan would ultimately win, but they certainly didn't expect the battle to be so utterly one-sided. Dozens of elite Aurors working together were so easily defeated.
The only thing that brought some comfort to the onlookers was that they hadn't impulsively stepped forward. Otherwise, they would have been the ones suffering now.
While this thought crossed their minds, all the Wizards who knew healing magic immediately stepped forward to tend to the injured.
Since this was a sparring match and not a life-or-death battle, even at the height of the fight, both sides carefully controlled the power of their spells, refraining from using dangerous Dark Magic like the Killing Curse.
Moreover, Ivan had held back significantly. The eighty-odd Aurors who had fallen weren't seriously hurt; most had only sustained minor injuries. The worst off was Colin Morton, who had been badly beaten by the combined casting of the Aurors. It looked severe, but he was in no mortal danger.
Despite this, the hall was in chaos. Ivan directed Fenrir and the others to bring the more seriously injured Aurors to him for personal treatment.
It took over half an hour to tend to everyone. Apart from a few who had lost too much blood and needed to be taken to the infirmary, the rest of the Aurors regrouped in the hall.
The atmosphere was different from when Ivan had first entered. All the Wizards were much more subdued, and the air of arrogance that had once lingered was now gone. The hall was silent, and many looked at Ivan with a mix of fear and respect.
"I must say, your performance has disappointed me", Ivan's gaze swept across the room, lingering on those who had faced him in battle. "With eighty-seven Wizards working together, you should have at least put up a better fight, if not defeated me. Unfortunately, a few harsh words clouded your judgment. You ignored all the hints I gave you and refused to believe the verified information. You consistently underestimated your opponent's strength."
"Facing an opponent far stronger than yourselves, you chose to fight individually, without even the most basic communication at the start. If you had been up against Grindelwald, your funeral would be tomorrow!"
"If this is the best your so-called elite can do, I don't mind requesting the Minister of Magic to send a new batch of people!" Ivan said with a cold smirk.
Hearing this, the Aurors hung their heads in shame. They finally understood that Ivan's provocations upon entering were all part of a test to gauge their abilities, and they had clearly failed.
Ivan berated them harshly, pointing out every mistake Colin Morton and the others had made during the battle. Seeing that everyone was obediently accepting the criticism without any defiance, he nodded to himself in approval.
The intense battle had been deliberately orchestrated. Ivan didn't have much time to gradually integrate this newly formed team, and he needed to break their arrogance. Now, after this harsh lesson, the effect was satisfactory. He had established his authority, and the next step was to break up the cliques formed by Aurors of different nationalities and reorganize the teams. With that, the Rapid Response Teams would truly be established.
