Chapter 97: A 'Father'
Chapter 97: A 'Father'
Jing He had a fair understanding of Lysandre, based primarily on his knowledge of the original story.
After all, the "X/Y" generation was when Mega Evolution was first introduced, and it was his favorite form of enhancement, hands down. As a result, he delved deeper into the background of "X/Y," including its lore and characters.
From what he knew, Lysandre was indeed the kind, benevolent person that Korrina described. The initial purpose of establishing the Flare Team and the Lysandre Labs was to help those in need. However, over time, Lysandre noticed that some people began to take his help for granted. They would curse, mock, and even defame him if he didn't assist them. At the same time, he grew increasingly disillusioned with the constant bickering and competition among people.
This is when Lysandre's mindset began to change. He decided to reduce the population to stop the fighting.
In the end, he planned to use the "Ultimate Weapon" from three thousand years ago, harnessing the power of the legendary Pokemon Xerneas and Yveltal to wipe out all life.
This was a gradual process of his mind becoming twisted and corrupted.
When it came to Lysandre, there was another person who couldn't be overlooked: King AZ of the Kalos region. Three thousand years ago, AZ created the "Ultimate Weapon" to revive his Pokemon, Trevenant, which had died in war. AZ's obsession led to the creation of a weapon that caused the deaths of countless innocent lives.
Lysandre, being a descendant of AZ's younger brother, found and activated the sealed "Ultimate Weapon." The genetic link between AZ and Lysandre likely played a role in Lysandre's mental issues. AZ's obsession with reviving his Pokemon and Lysandre's growing disillusionment with the world's "ugliness" shared a common thread of genetic predisposition.
Jing He pinched the bridge of his nose.
Honestly, unless he directly revealed Lysandre's identity and his true intentions, he couldn't refuse Korrina's request. After all, it seemed like a perfectly reasonable request, and she had just helped Gastly learn Shadow Ball.
After a moment's thought, he said, "If a person's mindset changes significantly over a short period, it's likely due to some kind of trauma or cognitive bias."
Korrina nodded in agreement. "That's what I suspected."
"Without understanding the root of the issue, it's difficult to make the right 'treatment' decisions," Jing He replied, passing the problem back to Korrina.
To be fair, regardless of Lysandre's identity, one needed to know the cause and the process to find a solution.
"I think Jing He is right," Cynthia chimed in, agreeing with his assessment.
Korrina pondered for a moment before responding, "I understand. I'll try to get someone to investigate. Hopefully, it's just my overthinking."
Cynthia added, "However, even if we understand the situation, it would be best to meet in person. Only face-to-face interaction can truly help with 'treatment.'"
She based this on her own experiences. Complex cases, like those involving Golem, couldn't be resolved with just a few words, phone calls, or video chats.
Jing He felt a pang of frustration. Just because Cynthia was cute didn't mean he wouldn't argue with her!
"Fair point," Korrina agreed. "I'll figure it out."
Jing He opened his mouth but didn't know what to say. The only consolation was that even if Korrina intervened, Lysandre probably wouldn't meet him. If it was just through the internet, it wouldn't be as dangerous. Of course, the likelihood of Lysandre agreeing to "psychological treatment" was low. If Korrina truly understood Lysandre's intentions, the League would act immediately, and his help wouldn't be needed.
'At least I still have the upper hand,' he sighed inwardly.
In the end, Jing He didn't refuse. He couldn't find a reason to. He tacitly agreed with Korrina and Cynthia's suggestions.
Afterward, he quietly drank his coffee while Cynthia and Korrina chatted quietly. Despite their different personalities, they had a strong bond, and their long separation made their conversation endless. They laughed and smiled, adding a beautiful touch to the afternoon.
Jing He tactfully didn't interrupt. The only one who "attended" the entire conversation was the Vulpix curled up in Cynthia's lap.
As twilight approached, Jing He and the two women spent a relatively peaceful afternoon together.
The brilliant clouds at the horizon, tinged with the sunset's glow, cast a gentle blush across the faces of the three.
"Shana."
At that moment, Kari's Shiftry returned with Gastly in tow. Gastly, unusually subdued, followed Shiftry with its head lowered, deep in thought, its expression serious.
"It seems it went well."
Kari could read the outcome in Shiftry's eyes as soon as she saw it.
"Kya!"
Gastly suddenly looked up.
Got it! We're having charcoal-grilled lamb chops tonight!
So, you were thinking about that the whole time?
However, Jing He knew that if Gastly hadn't made significant progress, it wouldn't have reacted this way. Most likely, if he asked now, Gastly would be wagging its "tail" in the air.
Sure enough, Gastly, seeing no one was paying attention, immediately shot Jing He an expectant look.
Why don't you ask?
I've even got my sunglasses ready!
But Jing He turned his head away, pretending not to see.
Gastly's frustration grew.
Cynthia smiled and turned to Kari.
"Got any plans for tonight?"
"Are you inviting me to dinner?" Kari smiled back.
But Cynthia just smiled and pointed at Jing He.
"He's treating us, at his place."
Wait, I haven't agreed to that yet!
"Really?"
Kari gave Jing He a meaningful look, then suddenly stood up, taking her phone to her ear.
"Mira? There's an event tonight? It's rare to have a break, I understand, I'll be there."
As she spoke, she put on her sunglasses and wide-brimmed hat, apologized to Cynthia and Jing He, and left with Shiftry in tow.
Mira is Kari's agent.
Jing He: "?"
Wait, did your phone even ring?
Cynthia smiled at him.
Jing He raised his hands in surrender.
"Fine, I'll buy the groceries."
It's just a meal, after all.
At least he's the "sugar daddy."
"Vulpix," Cynthia said softly.
"Ooo?"
"Want some good food?"
Vulpix, mimicking Gastly, patted its chest and smiled with its eyes.
"Ooo~"
Count on it.
Outside the supermarket.
To prevent Cynthia from developing another case of decision paralysis, Jing He left her and the Pokemon outside. Of course, another reason was to avoid Gastly's potential for reckless spending.
The sunset slowly approached the horizon.
Cynthia sat on a bench not far from the supermarket, resting her chin on her knees.
"Gastly, Vulpix," she said softly.
"Kya?"
"Ooo?"
"Jing He must be very important to you, right?"
Gastly, usually playful and mischievous, now grew serious, nodding vigorously.
"Kya!"
He's family, someone to protect with your life!
Vulpix let out a low whine.
"Ooo~"
He's like a 'father.'
"Hmm?"
"Kya?"
Noticing Cynthia and Gastly's gaze, Vulpix quickly waved its paws, blushing.
"Oo, oo~"
Just a metaphor.
"That's wonderful."
Cynthia gently tucked a strand of golden hair behind her ear and smiled.
Some trainers treat Pokemon as tools, stepping stones to fame and fortune, or yardsticks of strength. But others see them as partners, friends, and family. Pokemon are simple; they return your kindness tenfold.
So, a trainer's worth is often reflected in how their Pokemon regard them. Cynthia, a trainer who genuinely loves Pokemon, always adheres to a phrase from an ancient stone monument:
All life meets other life, and something is born from it.
Humans and Pokemon are no different.
In this regard, she believes Jing He shares her philosophy.
"What are you daydreaming about?"
Jing He, carrying several bags, looked curiously at the serious expressions on Cynthia's face, Gastly's, and Vulpix's. It was unlike Gastly to look so deep and intense.
"Kya!"
Gastly snapped out of it, grinning as it pounced on Jing He, licking his face before taking the bags from his hands.
"Ooo!"
Vulpix jumped from Cynthia's arms to Jing He's, affectionately licking his chin with its cool tongue.
One side was tingling, the other cool.
Jing He, adeptly, took out a "Pecha Berry" and looked at Cynthia suspiciously.
"What did you say to them?"
Cynthia smiled, a mischievous glint in her eye.
"A secret."
"Being so mysterious."
Under the last rays of the sunset, their shadows grew longer. Far away, Jing He's voice and the excited laughter of the Pokemon echoed.
"Got it, got it. Your lamb chops, Vulpix's cream cheese pancakes, and Cynthia's dessert."
