Chapter 95: The Darkness Ends
Chapter 95: The Darkness Ends
After taking out the machine guns and turning them on, Liam was surprised to find that they were equipped with smart computers, making them as easy to use as video games. He was relieved that they were in the Forbidden Forest and not at the school, where these would just be piles of scrap metal.
The battlefield fell into an eerie calm as Morgath retreated into the Forbidden Forest to avoid Peashooter's attacks. She needed time to gather more spiders to offset Liam's firepower advantage through sheer numbers.
Liam's group was small, and the area they had chosen for defense was not large, as no one had anticipated that the Giant Octo-Eyed Spiders would emerge in such great numbers. As a result, the area's firepower density was insufficient.
Seizing this opportunity, the Centaur and the Unicorn took a brief rest. Despite the Centaur’s immense physical strength, drawing the bow repeatedly was still tiring. The Unicorn also needed time to recover its magic power.
The Wolf, taking advantage of its small size and agility, began setting up Potato Mines nearby.
When Liam pulled out the two machine guns, Ferren curiously walked over and asked, "What are these?"
"Muggle weapons", Liam replied. He then turned on the smart computer on the machine gun to show Firenze. This quickly attracted many Centaurs to take a look.
"These fire metal projectiles rapidly, much like arrows. They wouldn't be effective against targeted magical defenses. However, I believe they will be useful against the spiders, as the Giant Octo-Eyed Spiders have no magical protection", Lady Betty remarked after watching the computer demonstration.
Lady Betty then assigned two Centaurs to operate the machine guns. Liam asked Betty curiously, "You aren't wary of these? I know many Wizards reject everything Muggle."
"Of course not. As long as it helps maintain the balance of nature, most means are acceptable. Besides, you can rest assured that no Wizard will know what happens here, because this is the Forbidden Forest. When we protect nature, nature also protects us. Not to mention, your headmaster left early this morning, and no one else has the capability to detect what's happening here."
Soon, two Centaurs carried the machine guns and set up positions on either side of the hill to create crossfire when the battle resumed.
Then, with a shrill sound like a fingernail on glass, a horde of spiders poured out of the underbrush like a flood.
Liam quickly used magic to disrupt the spiders. In such a dense charge, disrupting one spider could trigger a chain reaction, creating enough chaos to slow their advance and expose them to the Plants for longer.
Gradually, the spiders cleared a path with their bodies. Lady Betty detonated several Potato Mines, slowing the spiders' advance, but they quickly filled the gaps like a tide.
Finally, Lady Betty simultaneously detonated the ring of Potato Mines around the hill. The explosions disoriented the spiders, causing them to clump together. The machine guns on either side of the hill opened fire.
The battlefield turned into a massacre. Unlike the Peas, which couldn't penetrate the spiders, the 7.62mm bullets from the machine guns easily pierced through several spiders at once. Unlike Zombies, the spiders only stopped when thoroughly disrupted. After taking some hits, many spiders lost their sense of direction and ceased advancing.
These spiders made the entire group even more densely packed, making it easier for the machine guns to slaughter them. At the same time, the Centaurs tied Cherry Bombs to their arrows and shot them at the dense clusters of spiders.
Even more conveniently, the tightly packed spiders became excellent kindling for the Fire Dragon Grassflame. Eventually, a sea of fire spread near the hill.
Morgath was focused fire and eliminated while leading the charge. It thought it could withstand the Centaurs' arrows and clear a path for its offspring. However, the Centaurs immediately concentrated their Cherry Bombs on it, causing it to die instantly.
The remaining spiders lacked sufficient intelligence and blindly followed Morgath's last command, charging forward recklessly. In the end, they were all wiped out.
As the remaining spiders, driven by instinct, scattered and fled back to their nest in small groups, the battle could be declared a victory.
By this time, the sun was slowly setting, and in the twilight, one could see the clearing filled with various spider corpses, a brutal yet beautiful sight.
Bettie ordered a few injured Centaurs to collect loot while leading the others who could still fight to chase the fleeing spiders.
Firenze bent his legs, allowing Liam to climb onto his back.
When Liam saw Luo Nan running past, he glanced at him but did not object. So, he rode on Firenze's back, as he could not keep up with the Centaurs in the jungle.
On the way, Liam asked Firenze, "As far as I know, Centaurs generally don't allow humans to ride on their backs, right?"
"Yes, in most cases, we consider it an insult. But now we are in a common battle to maintain the harmony of nature. In this situation, carrying a less agile comrade on our backs is not an insult but a way to help each other, just like you provided us with Plants and weapons."
After traveling through the jungle for less than ten minutes, they finally reached the entrance of the small valley where the spider nest was located. Upon entering the valley, Liam found everyone standing idly at the entrance of a cave.
It turned out that after their defeat, the spiders and Aragog had retreated to this cave used for laying eggs. With a large number of spiders blocking the entrance, they couldn't advance.
The machine gun ammunition had run out, and the novice Centaurs had basically not let go of the triggers. There were not many Cherry Bombs left, and after a few were thrown and more spiders kept emerging from the cave, they abandoned the plan to blast a path.
At this moment, Liam arrived, opened the box, and prepared to try using the grenades to clear a path. To his surprise, these were not ordinary grenades but Thermobaric Grenades.
Their power was far greater than that of regular grenades, and for a moment, Liam considered saving them for the Basilisk battle.
But then he thought about being in the same confined space during the Basilisk battle and abandoned the suicidal plan.
Liam quickly informed the Centaurs about the effects of the grenades. After a few scouting Centaurs confirmed that the cave was not particularly large and had no other exits, the final battle was about to begin.
After this battle, the darkness that had plagued the Forbidden Forest for decades would finally be eradicated. The power of nature is great, and once these dark creatures are completely eliminated, all kinds of life will return here, restoring the vibrant ecosystem of the past.
