Chapter 949: Sheep into the Tiger's Mouth?
Chapter 949: Sheep into the Tiger's Mouth?
Pierce's words left the Wizards present quite surprised, all of them turning to look at Ivan. It was hard to believe that such a young Warlock could stand up to the legendary Dark Wizard Grindelwald.
Although the European Times had done a lot of publicity for Ivan in recent years, many Wizards from Asia and Africa had never even heard of the name Ivan Hals.
However, those who had made it to the Congress Building were all elite members of the Wizard community. Since the true power players had not raised any objections, no one dared to stir up trouble. Some clever Wizards even took note of Ivan’s appearance, marking him as someone not to be trifled with.
Due to the repeated attacks, the morning meeting was forced to cancel. Bruno and the other French Wizards were taken away for questioning by the Aurors.
As one of the suspects, Ivan had handed over the Key representing Britain, but this did not completely clear him of suspicion. He remained under close observation, with several Aurors keeping a watchful eye on his every move.
"I don't quite understand why you handed over the Key. It's a very important token..." After the crowd dispersed, Pierce asked, puzzled.
"To make the fish bite, you need to be willing to use the bait..." Ivan replied calmly.
"So, you already have a plan?" Pierce asked eagerly.
Since they had entered the North American Magical Congress, only a day had passed, yet two attacks had already occurred, both resulting in the deaths of Ministers of Magic. How could he not be worried?
Moreover, the Congress Chair now suspected them. If they couldn't find a way to expose Grindelwald soon, who knew what terrible things might happen?
Ivan did not directly answer Pierce's question but instead asked, "Minister Pierce, what do you think of the North American Magical Congress's security measures? Are there any loopholes?"
Pierce pondered for a moment before shaking his head. "The North American Aurors have done everything they can. Even if we were in charge, we couldn't do better... Unless Grindelwald possesses some kind of Magic that surpasses our understanding, I find it hard to imagine how he managed to attack two Ministers of Magic under such strict control."
"Under normal circumstances, it would be impossible. But what if there's a problem within the North American Magical Congress?" Ivan said with a cold laugh.
Pierce was taken aback, his brows furrowing. "You mean Grindelwald might have control over or be disguised as a high-ranking official in the Magical Congress?"
"But... how? During the last Wizarding War, Grindelwald already tricked them once. The North American side, no matter how foolish, should be deliberately guarding against that possibility." Pierce said, puzzled.
Conner had made it clear the previous day that they had set up Magic detection at the entrance to the Congress Building, ensuring that every Wizard entering was clean. The Aurors, Goblins, and House-Elves who had been long-term residents of the Congress Building had all been thoroughly checked.
"Even if their investigation was thorough, there's always one person who is an exception, isn't there?" Ivan said, hinting at something.
"You can't mean... You suspect the President of the North American Magical Congress—Wilkinson?" Pierce immediately understood Ivan's meaning and couldn't help but draw a sharp breath, his skin crawling.
“I remember you telling me that the office of the Minister of Magic usually has an independent fireplace that isn’t subject to any blockades, allowing free entry and exit without having to go through the main entrance. If anything happens, no one would dare to trace it back to the Congress Chair. In a sense, this position is almost perfect…” Ivan explained slowly.
“This… This can’t be possible, can it? Grindelwald shouldn’t have had the chance to replace the President, Sir…” Pierce shuddered. If what Ivan said was true, they had been in the enemy’s lair the entire time.
“Don’t forget, a few days ago, the Minister of France and Wilkinson had a secret meeting. They likely didn’t bring many people along…” As Ivan spoke, he couldn’t help but think of the Legilimens named Aires.
He had sensed a threat from this person, and now it seemed likely that Aires was actually Grindelwald in disguise. Perhaps, after being robbed of the Resurrection Stone, Grindelwald couldn’t contain his boiling rage, which made his presence so clear.
As a trusted confidant of the Minister of France, it was natural for Aires to be present at the secret meeting, and no one would have suspected a thing.
Given the situation, it wasn’t impossible for Congress Chair Wilkinson to have been controlled or replaced by Grindelwald.
“One piece of evidence is that the Minister of France committed suicide in his room. Among all the magic I know, only the Imperius Curse can achieve this,” Ivan explained.
“Grindelwald likely controlled him before the official meeting. The person threatening Igor was most likely this Master of Magic…”
“So, Wilkinson’s name wasn’t on Igor’s visitor list yesterday afternoon. In a sense, he was Grindelwald’s white glove. Now that the Minister of France is dead, all the leads are cut off…”
“Does that mean we’re doomed?” Pierce exclaimed. If the Congress Chair was Grindelwald, then the Congress Building had become a terrifying trap from which they couldn’t escape.
“It’s not that bad. Grindelwald can’t control everyone with the Imperius Curse. Plus, North America has been on high alert for a long time. In just a few days, he can only do so much,” Ivan reassured him. If Grindelwald had the ability to control and replace most Aurors, they would have been wiped out during the meeting.
“If I were Grindelwald, I wouldn’t abuse the Imperius Curse. Each additional person controlled increases the risk of exposure. With the Congress Chair’s position, he has countless ways to incite conflict in a plausible manner without arousing suspicion,” Ivan added.
Pierce nodded, realizing the situation wasn’t as dire as he had feared.
“Wait… If you suspected Wilkinson, why did you give him the Key?” Pierce asked, feeling uneasy. Grindelwald’s goal was clear: to seize the Keys distributed among the Ministers of Magic. Ivan, knowing the other’s identity, had willingly handed over the Key. Wasn’t that like sending a lamb to the slaughter?
