Chapter 948: He Is the Only One Capable of Countering Grindelwald
Chapter 948: He Is the Only One Capable of Countering Grindelwald
"Wait... Are you mistaken, Captain Bruno? You can't seriously believe this kid has the ability to kill Igor, can you?" The President of the Asian Magical Association looked at Bruno with a puzzled expression, asking in confusion.
What made it even more baffling was that Wilkinson, Pierce, and the others seemed to tacitly accept this claim...
Under the watchful eyes of everyone present, Ivan responded calmly and unhurriedly.
"Captain Bruno, before you accuse someone, please provide evidence! I think you might have forgotten that another attack occurred in the North American Magical Congress yesterday evening. I believe Director Cornell arranged for a sufficient number of Aurors to patrol the area last night..."
"That's right! I assigned three squads of Aurors to patrol the corridors and set up numerous hidden wards... The residences of all attendees were heavily fortified." Cornell spoke with great seriousness, which was precisely what puzzled him.
To prevent another attack, he had made extensive preparations. Hundreds of Aurors from the North American Magical Congress patrolled the entire compound day and night, making it impossible for even a fly to get in.
Unfortunately, none of these precautions seemed to have been of any use. The French Minister of Magic still died silently in his room, and the only clue was the suspicion that he had been hit by the Imperius Curse...
Indeed, they couldn't even confirm this, given that this was a national Minister of Magic, unlike the impulsive Percy, who always had attendants around him.
From Bruno and the others' testimonies, it was clear that the Minister did not meet with any Wizards alone during the meeting, meaning that even if Grindelwald wanted to place the Imperius Curse on him, he had no opportunity to do so. This was what truly made the situation bizarre.
"Given the presence of these Aurors and protective magic, the possibility of an outsider infiltrating the Common Room is virtually zero. Instead, I suspect you are the ones who murdered the Minister of France... The strongest fortresses are often breached from within, are they not? We all know that Grindelwald is most active in France!" Ivan said, his words deliberate and measured.
Hearing this, the others present looked at Bruno and his team with skepticism. Ivan's argument was logical, and only someone like Bruno, who was deeply trusted, could have easily placed the Imperius Curse on the Minister of France.
"Nonsense, we would never do such a thing!" A French Auror's face turned red with anger, shouting in fury. Ivan's words were undoubtedly an insult to their duty.
Bruno spoke without hesitation. "Each of us is willing to undergo Veritaserum questioning and Memory Scanning to prove our innocence! But in return, I demand that the North American Magical Congress conduct a memory search on Halsmaster..."
Ivan furrowed his brow, somewhat taken aback. Memories are a person's most precious and private possessions. He hadn't expected Bruno to go to such lengths to clear his name, and even to implicate himself in the process.
Could he have been wrong? Perhaps Grindelwald wasn't disguised as a French Wizard, and Bruno and his team were innocent?
But if that were the case, when was the Minister of Magic controlled? Surely not before the meeting began...
Ivan had a vague idea of what was going on, but before he could delve deeper, Wilkinson spoke up. "Is it acceptable, Hals? Do you agree to Brunomaster's proposal?"
"Absolutely not!" Ivan replied decisively. "Everyone's memories are incredibly private. I believe you should all understand that."
"If Lord Hals is concerned about that, I can assure you that the Legilimens of the Magical Congress will use Memory Charms to erase any information they shouldn't know after searching the memories", Wilkinson explained.
"Sorry, Presidentmaster, I don’t trust anyone!" Ivan bluntly interrupted Wilkinson.
The atmosphere in the corridor immediately turned cold. The Aurors from the Magical Congress tightened their grips on their wands, and Bruno and his companions seemed to have found a lever to exploit, looking excited.
However, before they could say anything, Ivan pulled a silver raven from his sleeve and spoke. "To prove my sincerity, I can hand over the Key to you for safekeeping. Isn't that what Grindelwald truly wants?"
Pierce was taken aback by Ivan's action. After all, this Sickle was not just a Key; it also represented Britain's influence in the International Confederation of Wizards. How could he so easily give it away?
But when Pierce tried to signal Ivan with his eyes, he saw Ivan subtly shake his head.
Though he didn’t understand what Ivan was up to, Pierce had no choice but to remain silent and patient.
"So, you intend to hand over the Key to us for safekeeping?" Wilkinson was quite surprised and asked curiously.
"Other than searching my memories, this is the only way to clear some of my suspicion, isn't it?" Ivan shrugged, seeming regretful.
Wilkinson looked deeply at Ivan and then extended his hand to take the silver raven.
"Given the current situation, this Key will be temporarily stored at the Magical Congress. We will return it to you after the meeting ends."
As he spoke, Wilkinson summoned a few Aurors from the Department of Mysteries to verify the authenticity of the Key. After receiving a clear confirmation, he put it away and then looked at the President of the Asian Magical Association, making a suggestion.
"The situation is now clear. Whoever possesses the Key will be Grindelwald's next target. To prevent further attacks, we should centralize the remaining Keys and have Aurors guard them."
"No, we can't keep all the Keys in one place. If Grindelwald gets his hands on them, everything will be over", the President of the Asian Magical Association shook his head, refusing Wilkinson's suggestion. He had no intention of handing over such an important item.
"By the way, may I ask why the Key representing Britain is in the possession of Master Hals?" the President of the Asian Magical Association asked, a hint of confusion in his voice.
The Wizards gathered in the Common Room were equally curious. Pierce, however, had prepared his explanation and calmly responded.
"Hals's strength surpasses mine. He is the only one who can currently stand against Grindelwald. I entrusted the Key to him for safekeeping to ensure it was in the most secure hands."
