Chapter 947: What Can These Useless Aurors Do?
Chapter 947: What Can These Useless Aurors Do?
Many people shared the same thoughts as the witch, and for a moment, the calls to end the meeting and leave the Magical Congress echoed throughout the room.
Ivan remained silent throughout, observing the crowd with a cold eye, noting everyone's expressions and reactions. He then glanced down at the fallen French Minister of Magic, surprised to find that the man's face bore no signs of fear or terror, but instead had an eerie calm that sent shivers down his spine.
Since several hours had passed since the French Minister of Magic's death, the remaining magical image was blurry and indistinct. The Wizards from the Department of Mysteries could only determine that there were no traces of a second person casting a spell in the room. The cause of death was the Killing Curse, and they found the relevant magical residue from the wand that had fallen to the floor.
According to the Aurors' analysis, the French Minister of Magic had apparently risen in the middle of the night and cast the Killing Curse on himself. The effect was immediate and lethal, leading to a silent and undisturbed death, which is why no one was alerted.
It wasn't until this morning, just before the meeting began, that the French delegation noticed something was amiss when the Minister of Magic did not emerge from his room.
A major country's Minister of Magic could not have suddenly decided to commit suicide. Therefore, the only remaining possibility was that he, like Percy, had fallen under the Imperius Curse...
Many clever Wizards also came to this conclusion, and their gazes toward their colleagues grew more wary. If even a major country's Minister of Magic could be controlled, who could guarantee that Grindelwald had only controlled one or two people? It was entirely possible that at any moment, a nearby Wizard might suddenly draw their wand and cast the Killing Curse.
In this atmosphere of extreme distrust, the Wizards' dissatisfaction reached a breaking point.
Cornell and the other Aurors tried their best to maintain order, but it was to no avail. In the end, they all turned to the President of the Magical Congress, Wilkinson, for a decision.
"Silence!" Wilkinson raised his hand, his voice amplified by the Sonorus charm, overpowering the chaotic murmurs and drawing the attention of most of the attendees.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I implore you to calm down. This is just Grindelwald's scheme to divide us. By killing the Ministers of Magic from Russia and France, he hopes to force us into submission through violence. If we end this meeting prematurely, it will only embolden him further..." Wilkinson pleaded.
However, the Wizards were not convinced. A middle-aged Warlock spoke up with biting sarcasm. "You want us to stay, President Sir? What about our safety? Who will guarantee it? These useless Aurors? Two people are already dead, and they haven't even found a trace of the culprit!"
The Aurors responsible for security turned pale, unable to refute the Warlock's words, as they had indeed found no leads.
Amidst the growing doubts, Wilkinson slowly continued, "One day... I ask for one more day. No matter what, the North American Congress of Magic will provide answers to all of you. If we still cannot find the culprit by then, I will not stand in your way."
Under Wilkinson's persistent persuasion, the Wizard representatives, who had been rattled by the consecutive attacks, reluctantly calmed down. Since the North American Congress of Magic had made a promise, they could not push too hard.
Conner, however, looked somewhat worried. Wilkinson's words were too confident. He didn't believe that a single day would be enough to find any decisive clues or evidence. What would they have to show for it by then?
After all, two Ministers of Magic from major countries had died in the North American Congress of Magic. If they couldn't capture Grindelwald, they would inevitably face the wrath of both sides.
Or perhaps President Wilkinson already had a plan?
A large-scale search of memories was absolutely out of the question. While Legilimency could detect if a Wizard was under the Imperius Curse, it required a deep search of memories to find any anomalies.
The Wizards present were all elite individuals, some even leaders in their fields. Their memories were incredibly precious. This suggestion wouldn't just be impossible to implement; he would be drowned in a sea of criticism if he even dared to voice it.
But apart from that, he couldn't think of a second method to capture Grindelwald in such a short time. They couldn't possibly use Wilkinson, Pierce, and others as bait, could they?
These were all high-ranking officials, each more afraid of death than the last.
Conner sighed inwardly, then turned to look at the French Wizards. He asked, "Master Bruno, did you notice anything unusual in the Common Room last night?"
Bruno hesitated and shook his head, but then, as if a thought struck him, he spoke with a gloomy tone. "Last night, Minister of Magic Sir had just discussed the killer of Igor with us. He suspected someone was using Grindelwald's name to commit murders. Don't forget, this is the headquarters of the North American Congress of Magic. Grindelwald would never be able to sneak in undetected."
"How could that be? Who else could have killed two Ministers of Magic so easily besides that demon?" the President of the Asian Magical Association frowned, questioning.
He was well aware of Igor's strength. Before becoming Minister of Magic, Igor had been a renowned Dueling Master in Russia. The killer had immobilized him with a single Binding Spell, something no ordinary Wizard could do.
"Of course, there is someone. In fact, one of us is an extraordinary genius Wizard who managed to escape from Grindelwald unscathed..." Bruno said, his eyes fixed on Ivan. After a pause, he asked, "Sir Hals, where were you last night and this afternoon?"
"Of course, I was in my room in the Common Room. Many people can vouch for me", Ivan replied calmly.
Pierce and Delius immediately nodded, willing to swear on their honor to guarantee Ivan's alibi.
"They are all British Wizards, of course they would speak up for you..." Bruno pressed on. During their first meeting in France, he had already sensed that this young Wizard was an incredibly dangerous figure.
This wasn't just because of Ivan's exceptional strength but more importantly, because of his utter disregard for authority and law, which had left Bruno chilled to the bone...
Bruno had no doubt that if Pierce and the others hadn't intervened, this young Wizard would have dared to take action against them right there in the French Ministry of Magic...
