Chapter 946: Threatening Rozier
Chapter 946: Threatening Rozier
"Are you being cautious of me?" Rozier asked, tilting his head slightly as he observed Kyle's actions.
"Yes," Kyle replied without hesitation. "As a just wizard, what's wrong with being cautious of a Dark Wizard like you from decades ago?"
"I thought we were working together quite well."
"It's only temporary, and it's not even a collaboration. At most, we have a common enemy," Kyle said. "Besides, have you forgotten that we were enemies just a few months ago?"
"But you're still fine, aren't you?"
"That's only because I'm cautious enough; it has nothing to do with you," Kyle said, his eyes never leaving Rozier's movements.
Fortunately, although Rozier felt it was a pity, he wasn't overly fixated on the alchemical item that could withstand the Killing Curse.
Aside from the fact that Kyle was watching from the side, Rozier also considered that the item's usefulness didn't seem as great as she had imagined.
The ability to withstand the Killing Curse sounded very tempting, but in reality, it wasn't as useful as it seemed, as Grindelwald didn't seem to need it at all.
After all, his opponent was Dumbledore, a wizard who had rarely, if ever, used the Killing Curse... At least, Rozier had never seen Dumbledore cast the Killing Curse.
The same went for the Cruciatus and Imperius Curses.
Even during the most intense moments of the war seventy years ago, Dumbledore had never used the Unforgivable Curses.
This was probably why he was known as the strongest Light Wizard.
It was like that before, and there was no need to elaborate further now...
So, Rozier saw no reason to take an unknown risk to seize an alchemical item that seemed useless to Grindelwald.
After all, the few spells Kyle had used earlier still made her somewhat wary.
With this in mind, Rozier began to retreat and shift her position.
"If you're thinking of helping Grindelwald, I suggest you drop that idea," Kyle said suddenly.
"They won't welcome you... Neither of them will," Kyle added.
Rozier paused in her movements and studied Kyle intently before narrowing her eyes, "Oh? What do you know?"
"I don't know anything; I'm just talking nonsense," Kyle shrugged.
"You can take this as... I don't want to help Professor Dumbledore, but I also don't want you to help Grindelwald, so I came up with this excuse."
"If I insist..." Rozier continued to stare at Kyle, "Will you stop me?"
"No," Kyle replied without hesitation, glancing to his left.
There had been no movement there, and it was quiet as if nothing had happened, which was clearly abnormal.
Either they hadn't taken action yet, or they had gone somewhere else, or they had used some sort of special magic.
But no matter what the situation was, Kyle didn't want to get involved.
"Of course, I can't just watch you go and cause trouble for Professor Dumbledore," Kyle continued.
"What do you mean by that?" Rozier returned to the ground, asking with interest.
"It means that if you go to help Grindelwald, I'll go and seek revenge on the wizards still nearby."
Kyle spoke calmly, "They showed me no mercy when they chased me in the forest before, and I remember it all. It's a good time to catch up with them now that I'm free."
"I guess Voldemort didn't kill everyone... But there's only you here, so they must have been injured and retreated from the battlefield."
"If that's the case, they can't have gone far."
Rozier's expression grew colder.
Kyle was right; those people were indeed injured and not far away, in a place nearby.
Kyle hadn't arrived at this location yet when it happened. They had underestimated Voldemort's strength and overestimated themselves, caught off guard by two consecutive large-scale spells.
Some died instantly, while most of the others suffered various degrees of injury and had to withdraw from the battlefield.
In their current state, they would stand no chance against Kyle if he found them.
"Are you doing this... Does Dumbledore know?" Rozier asked coldly.
"How would I know? He's not here," Kyle said. "Even if he knew, what could he do? As I said before, I respect Professor Dumbledore, but that doesn't mean I'll listen to everything he says."
"But we just helped you kill Voldemort," Rozier's tone changed slightly.
"I remember, he's the most dangerous Dark Wizard in Britain, right? The culprit behind countless broken homes and ruined lives, even making British wizards afraid to speak his name.
"We helped you get rid of this Dark Wizard at all costs, yet you want to turn around and kill us... Is that appropriate?"
"You're not helping us," Kyle corrected. "You're just helping Grindelwald. It's not that grand a deed."
"Regardless of our motives, we did lend a hand, didn't we?" Rozier didn't back down. "If it was just you, and we hadn't exhausted Voldemort's energy with our lives, would it have been so easy for you to kill him?"
Easy? Kyle raised an eyebrow.
It had to be said that the Black Rose of France, once a force to be reckoned with in Europe, was indeed a formidable opponent.
If an uninformed person had heard her words just now, they might have genuinely believed that Kyle was being ungrateful.
But was that truly the case?
...Not necessarily.
Before coming here, Voldemort had been fighting the people of Hogwarts all night. If we're talking about exhaustion, it certainly wasn't Rozier and the others who bore the brunt of it.
Those who lasted only a few minutes before being eliminated could, at most, serve as mere props.
And he even sacrificed the basilisk. What did Rozier do... one could say it was helpful, but not really.
"You're right," Kyle suddenly laughed and said calmly. "Regardless of your motives for dealing with Voldemort, you did help us. As a British wizard, I shouldn't be ungrateful."
"But I can't pretend that what happened before didn't happen. After all, it was my first time being chased like that, and I couldn't just let it go without revenge..."
"So, what are you going to do?" Rozier asked.
"Choose a compromise," Kyle smiled. "How about you continue helping Grindelwald, and I'll seek revenge, but I won't kill them. What do you think?"
"That's great, you..." Rozier was about to speak, but suddenly closed her mouth when she saw Kyle's expression.
She noticed the fleeting mockery in Kyle's eyes, and she could clearly sense that Kyle's true intentions were not the same as what she had just said.
Not killing them... that was too broad a term, and in a way, it was as good as saying nothing.
Rozier frowned slightly. The method she had used to deal with Newt and Dumbledore didn't seem to work here.
Kyle stood across from her, appearing unhurried.
If Rozier really left to help Grindelwald, he would definitely seek out others, but Kyle was a person of his word. Since he said he wouldn't kill them, he wouldn't go back on it.
Kyle touched the box, and he seemed to feel a bone-chilling coldness in his hand.
After all, as long as the body was alive, it could be considered alive, right? At most, it would just be missing a chunk of the soul, and he had professionals here. The method would be clean and efficient... or perhaps it was just a verbal trick.
But that didn't matter. What mattered was that he truly wouldn't kill those people.
The two stared at each other for a long time, and Rozier guessed Kyle's intentions, even guessing about the Dementors.
Because Kyle didn't try to hide anything, and both were honest with each other.
Rozier suddenly laughed. She straightened her black robe, which had become disheveled in the fight, and waved her hand, turning a nearby branch into a vintage wide-brimmed hat, which she placed on her head.
This gesture indicated that she would no longer be helping Grindelwald.
To be more precise, from the moment Kyle reminded her, she had already given up on the idea of helping.
As one of Grindelwald's closest subordinates, how could Rozier be so dull as to not know anything?
Not to mention that she had been with Grindelwald even after his defeat.
She couldn't find Nurmengard, so she waited in the forest, waiting for Grindelwald to escape and lead them to reconquer Europe and even the entire magical world.
But this wait lasted for seventy years.
This Nurmengard tower was designed by Grindelwald... how could he not escape for seventy years?
The only possible reason was that he simply hadn't thought of it... for Dumbledore.
Moreover, they hadn't seen each other in a long time.
Rozier understood Grindelwald well and knew that at this moment, he definitely didn't want to see anyone other than Dumbledore.
She glanced at Kyle once more, then turned and walked towards the other side of the forest, soon disappearing from sight.
Kyle guessed that she was probably going to find the injured people from before, so he didn't stop her.
As long as Rozier didn't go to help Grindelwald, he didn't bother with her. Besides, he had more important matters to attend to.
Kyle stepped over an ugly statue covered in cracks and quickly approached the basilisk, which had turned completely grayish-white.
Kyle stood there, feeling so heartbroken that he almost bled.
This was the basilisk... and it was the only thousand-year-old basilisk in the entire magical world. To see it die like this, it was hard not to feel heartbroken.
There was no other way at the time. In order to quickly defeat Voldemort, Kyle had to do this.
When Kyle saw Voldemort casually summon those skeletons, he had already thought it through. Voldemort possessed all sorts of dark magic, and defeating him through normal means was extremely difficult.
Over a decade ago, Lily Evans' ability to defeat Voldemort was nothing short of a miracle. Even Dumbledore couldn't accomplish what she did, and that was why Harry's reputation as the Savior was so renowned.
But Kyle wasn't Lily Evans, nor did he possess her unique ability to reflect the Killing Curse.
After much deliberation, it seemed that the only way for him to defeat Voldemort was to catch him off guard and launch a surprise attack.
However, Voldemort wasn't like the Hogwarts students who lacked combat experience. Especially after facing repeated setbacks, it was impossible for him to be distracted during a fight.
If such a situation were to occur, it would only be because something he deeply cared about happened... For instance, Voldemort, who claimed to be a descendant of Slytherin, personally killed the Basilisk, the symbol of the Slytherin heir.
Thus, Kyle gritted his teeth and released the Basilisk, allowing it to block those hundreds of Killing Curses.
Voldemort's attention was indeed drawn away, and during that brief moment of distraction, Kyle found the opportunity to defeat him.
To be honest, there was an element of luck involved. In that fleeting moment, almost a blink of an eye, Voldemort happened to not notice Kyle's actions, and the spot where he was standing had a small cluster of Fiery Flame that could serve as a medium.
If he were to do it again, Kyle couldn't guarantee success. If the confrontation continued, Voldemort would most likely choose to escape again, finding another place to recuperate.
Everything would be exactly the same as before.
Thinking about it, sacrificing a Basilisk to counter all the threats posed by Voldemort seemed like a fair trade.
Oh, it might not be a bad deal for others, but for Kyle, it was a huge loss.
The Basilisk... He still found it hard to accept, and he wasn't sure if he would ever encounter a new one.
With these thoughts in mind, Kyle sighed, opened the box, and carefully placed the Basilisk's body inside.
Although it had been hit by hundreds of curses, they were all Killing Curses that wouldn't leave any marks on the body. Therefore, the Basilisk's body was still a rare treasure.
Oh, and most importantly.
Kyle loosened his right hand, which had been tightly clenched, and a faint orange glow seeped through his fingers.
The Basilisk's eyes, which were also an important tool he used to defeat Voldemort's consciousness, were, in a sense, similar to the Killing Curse. They could both affect the soul or consciousness, which were intangible and ethereal.
Kyle wasn't familiar with the Killing Curse, but this tool was even more useful. It didn't require incantations or a wand; he could simply take it out and use it whenever he needed it.
Convenient, quick, and efficient... It might come with a slight possibility of mutual destruction.
After all, no one could guarantee complete control over their vision, not even Kyle. A gust of wind might cause one's gaze to shift involuntarily.
If he were to catch a glimpse of the Basilisk's eyes, even a peripheral glance might be affected.
Therefore, Kyle kept his eyes closed throughout, both during the battle and now.
He tilted his head back with force, turning the nearby fallen leaves into thick, black-mouthed bottles. He carefully transferred the two intact Basilisk eyes into the bottles.
The dark bottles blocked the Basilisk's gaze, and Kyle finally breathed a slight sigh of relief.
Fortunately, the Basilisk's eyes were preserved. Later, he could visit Niccolo and see if there was a way to turn the Basilisk's eyes into a weapon.
Or it could be a wand accessory, which would be both aesthetically pleasing and inconspicuous. It could also make up for his lack of proficiency in using the Killing Curse, achieving multiple benefits.
Now that he thought about it, it was truly amazing. The Basilisk was completely dead, yet its eyes remained intact and undamaged. Not only that, but even after being separated from the Basilisk's head, the curse ability within them was perfectly preserved.
Kyle didn't know how long this ability would last, but it was already quite astonishing.
It felt like the eyes were not a part of the body but rather a weapon attached separately, like a knife or a wand, ready to be picked up and used.
It was abrupt yet normal.
Anyone who had read "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" knew that the Basilisk was artificially created, a dark creature made for war. Every part of its body was artificially added, including those cursed eyes.
