Chapter 943: The Disappearing Key
Chapter 943: The Disappearing Key
"Priori Incantatem!"
Strands of golden mist emerged from the wands of several people, spreading out in all directions. The onlookers stepped back, clearing a space of about thirty square meters.
After a moment, the golden mist gradually coalesced into a hazy, ethereal figure—none other than Minister Igor.
Seeing this, Ivan let out a sigh of relief. He had almost forgotten that the North American Congress of Magic possessed a spell that could trace magical traces.
This meant the truth of the matter would soon come to light.
Percy clearly thought the same, his eyes wide as he didn't want to miss a single detail.
The ethereal magical image was quite blurry, only allowing a vague view of Minister Igor pacing back and forth in the corridor, seemingly waiting for someone.
About one or two seconds later, Percy's figure appeared at the other end of the corridor.
Minister Igor seemed somewhat surprised, quickly walking forward to speak with Percy.
However, since this was a residual magical image, it was impossible to see the specific lip movements, and no one in the room could use lip-reading to reconstruct the conversation. All they could see was Percy suddenly drawing his wand and pointing it at Minister Igor, casting a Killing Curse.
A blinding green light flashed in the air.
Minister Igor clearly hadn't expected such a sudden attack. His face showed shock and confusion before he was struck by the Killing Curse and fell to the ground.
Then, the image of Percy bending down to touch Minister Igor's body appeared. A second later, the magical image ended, and the golden mist dispersed.
"Now it's clear! The Wizard who killed the Minister of Magic is this British Wizard!" a Russian Warlock said harshly.
Percy's face turned pale. He had never imagined that the reenacted scene would look like this.
Did he really kill the Minister of Magic?
"No, it wasn't me... it was the Imperius Curse! Someone used the Imperius Curse to control me!" Percy shouted frantically, but no one paid him any attention.
Cornell stroked his chin, sensing something was amiss. He immediately waved for the Aurors from the Department of Mysteries to cast "Priori Incantatem" repeatedly.
"Stop it here!" On the third repetition, Cornell suddenly ordered.
The golden magical image froze, with the two ethereal figures suspended in mid-air, right at the moment Percy cast the Killing Curse at Minister Igor.
Cornell stared intently for a long time, then turned to Ivan and asked, "What do you think, Hals?"
"It's clear that Minister Igor wasn't completely unprepared for Percy..." Ivan pointed to the frozen image of Igor.
The onlookers followed Ivan's gaze and noticed that when Percy had cast the spell, Minister Igor's hand had already reached for his wand at his waist, and his body had shifted slightly to the left, as if he was trying to dodge.
However, for some reason, Igor didn't move again until he was hit by the Killing Curse, as if he had been paralyzed with fear.
But this was highly implausible. After all, Percy wasn't attacking an ordinary person, but the Minister of Magic of the Russian Ministry of Magic. If Igor had been prepared, he wouldn't have made such a basic mistake.
"It must be the effect of a Binding Spell! There must have been a third Wizard present at the time..." Ivan slowly spoke, his mind already piecing together the sequence of events.
Grindelwald first used the Imperius Curse to control Percy, then followed him under an Invisibility Cloak to meet Minister Igor. Finally, he used the Binding Spell to assist Percy in the murder, framing the British Wizards to incite conflict and disrupt the upcoming negotiations.
Even though Ivan understood this, he still had many questions, such as how Grindelwald managed to sneak into the heavily guarded headquarters of the North American Congress and how he arranged a private meeting with Minister Igor.
"May I ask, why was your Minister of Magic alone in such a remote place?" Ivan turned to the Russian Warlocks, his tone curious.
Ministers of Magic from various countries are usually heavily protected, especially when traveling in foreign territory. It seemed odd that he didn’t have a few Aurors for security.
"Well... we don’t know. Minister Igor only told us he was going to meet an important person to discuss something..." the Russian Warlock hesitated, adding that they had felt uneasy at the time, but Minister Igor was known for acting on his own and was powerful. Since it was the headquarters of the Magical Congress, they didn’t object.
"An important person... to discuss something..." Ivan thought for a moment, then suddenly looked at Pierce. "Minister Pierce, put yourself in Minister Igor’s shoes. In what situation would you make the same decision?"
Pierce pondered for a long time and finally shook his head hesitantly. He wasn’t as reckless as Igor and would always consider his safety.
"But what if I had dirt on you, or if we needed to discuss something that couldn’t be known by others?" Ivan’s tone grew more serious.
Pierce’s expression changed. If it were as Ivan said, he might indeed have gone alone.
Cornell’s mind raced, but he glanced at the surrounding Wizards and swallowed his words.
"Can’t we extract more images?" Ivan pointed to the frozen Magical Image, asking. The information they had was still too limited to track down Grindelwald.
"We can’t. We were able to recreate this Magical Image because of the residual Magic from the Killing Curse Percy cast", Cornell sighed, then waved for the Aurors from the Department of Mysteries to dispel the Magic.
The frozen golden image returned to normal, showing Percy casting the spell that killed Igor, then crouching on the ground.
"Was he looking for something at the end?" someone in the crowd shouted.
Ivan was taken aback. They hadn’t considered this possibility after hearing Percy’s explanation, but now it seemed likely.
Cornell seemed to have an epiphany. He stepped forward and had a brief conversation with the Russian Warlocks, then instructed the Aurors to strip Percy and thoroughly examine him. His face grew grim as he said, word by word, "The key is gone! Grindelwald was after that!"
