Chapter 94: The Beginning of the Long Hunt
Chapter 94: The Beginning of the Long Hunt
The night passed, and the morning sky was still dim.
Lin Sai dragged the spruce trees he had gathered the previous day and chose a flat spot next to the glass greenhouse as the foundation for his future woodshed.
Early that morning, before the sun had even risen, he paid a visit to the chapel to inform Lady Red Moon of his decision to stay in the wooden cottage for a while.
The nun was supportive of Lin Sai's decision and even offered words of encouragement, indicating her approval.
With this support, Lin Sai felt motivated as he prepared to begin construction.
"Huff—"
Standing at the edge of the empty lot, Lin Sai rolled up his sleeves and took a deep breath.
He pulled out a saw, a chisel, a plane, and other woodworking tools from his bag and proceeded to resource-convert them one by one.
With preparations complete, it was time to start building! After bidding farewell to Joel the previous night, Lin Sai knew he had to strengthen himself in anticipation of potential crises in the town.
Other Awakened individuals shared this goal.
The methods were straightforward: honing their skills and cultivating Essence.
For Lin Sai, this meant focusing on the various game modules.
He decided to postpone his attempt at the rhythm game with the Artist, intending to make full use of the two time periods when plants grew to construct the woodshed and root cellar using the available materials.
This would likely contribute to the upgrade of the Survival and Construction module.
Not long after, strange creaking and squeaking sounds emanated from beside the wooden cottage.
Curious townsfolk approached and discovered Lin Sai working on the spruce trees.
They weren't overly surprised, as there were numerous Awakened individuals in town, and they understood this to be a manifestation of Lin Sai's unique abilities.
Lin Sai, fully immersed in his labor, was oblivious to their presence.
Typically, novice carpenters would waste a significant amount of material.
However, with the resource-converted tools, even as a complete beginner, Lin Sai achieved relatively satisfactory results in wood processing.
After an hour or so, he had only wasted a little more than one spruce tree and had already prepared the posts and beams for the woodshed.
"My efficiency is definitely quite impressive," Lin Sai remarked with satisfaction.
He then opened his attribute panel, only to feel a bit disappointed.
His Strength and Physique experience points had increased slightly, but there was no sign of the desired Carpentry Skill.
"Is the work I'm doing too simple?" Lin Sai shook his head.
He had previously constructed the graveyard hedge at the chapel without any expert guidance, relying on a primitive approach.
It seemed unlikely that he still wouldn't be able to acquire the corresponding skill after starting to build structures.
Flexing his wrists, Lin Sai resumed his work.
He recalled that mortise and tenon joinery could be beneficial when constructing wooden buildings.
Following his memory, he attempted this technique but quickly abandoned it after wasting a plank.
Instead, he opted to simply chisel out notches in the wood, facilitating the connection between two pieces.
The remaining stability was ensured by nails.
Lin Sai rationalized to himself:
"After all, it's just a woodshed; there's no need to make it too fancy!"
Time passed, and soon, another hour had gone by.
Lin Sai buried the posts in the ground for stability and then erected the beams on top.
A spacious woodshed, two meters wide and three meters long, now had a basic framework in place.
Although the walls and roof were still non-existent, Lin Sai felt a sense of satisfaction and smiled foolishly at the simple frame:
"My craftsmanship is pretty decent."
With his hands on his hips, he stood up and savored the joy that came from hard work. Then, he turned and headed back to the nearby greenhouse.
Lin Sai had timed it perfectly.
It was now time to help the plants with pollination and crossbreeding.
If he delayed any longer, the growth speed of the Resource Seeds would make this task challenging.
An hour later, Lin Sai returned outside.
After tending to the plants, he picked up his tools again, ready to construct the woodshed's roof.
Lin Sai glanced at his attribute panel.
He noticed that the words "Carpentry (Beginner)" had mysteriously appeared.
"Huh?"
Lin Sai blinked, sensing he had grasped something crucial.
He immediately realized and grabbed his tools, continuing to split the pine tree to create planks.
After preparing several planks, he took out his dagger and quickly whittled a few more for comparison.
Through repeated attempts, he gained a new understanding of his skills.
"Resource Conversion Tools simplify the process of handling wood, but due to the reduced difficulty, the experience gained is also significantly lower!"
"If I don't use these convenient Resource Conversion Tools and purely rely on my personal efforts, the growth rate of experience will increase."
Lin Sai summarized, feeling relieved.
This aligned with the skill description in the task bar.
After all, it was a system that integrated and transformed player experiences and training.
If the process itself was simplified, the corresponding skill experience gained would naturally decrease.
Lin Sai silently accepted this fact and decided that unless he was in a rush or at a critical juncture, he would avoid using these convenient Resource Conversion Tools.
He chose faster growth over temporary convenience.
He knew how to prioritize.
With his superhuman physical strength, Lin Sai crafted the planks and constructed the woodshed's roof.
A few pine planks were wasted in the process.
But the experience gain also accelerated.
Before noon, Lin Sai's Carpentry skill advanced from (Beginner) to (Master) level.
At this stage, he could handle all tasks with ease.
Even before lunch, he completed a roof that could shelter them from wind and rain.
Lin Sai sat on the roof, enjoying the gentle autumn breeze, feeling incredibly refreshed.
From there, he spotted the southern exit of the town leading to the outside world.
Hunter Dan was fully equipped, gathering with other hunters at the junction.
Even the town's other Awakened, who usually refrained from hunting, joined this distant hunt, emphasizing its importance.
However, perhaps due to the previous mother-son conflict, Joel's figure was absent from the hunting team.
"The distant hunt is about to begin..."
Lin Sai whispered to himself.
After a busy morning, he didn't feel like cooking at noon.
He lazily took out a meat biscuit and ate it with water, a simple meal on the rooftop.
He silently wished the hunters a bountiful hunt, hoping to alleviate the town's current food shortage.
As the hunting team disappeared into the distant forest.
Lin Sai jumped down from the roof and prepared to tend to the crops nearing harvest.
Out of habit, he checked his attribute panel.
"Ah!"
Lin Sai was delighted.
He initially wanted to confirm the growth rate of his Carpentry experience, but due to the smooth construction of the woodshed,
A new task appeared in his task bar!
【Build a Woodshed and Root Cellar】
【Add new constructions, the Woodshed and Root Cellar, to your own buildings.】
【Reward: Survival and Construction Module Upgrade, Minor Attribute/Skill Experience Points.】
