Chapter 939: The Terrifying Resurrection Stone
Chapter 939: The Terrifying Resurrection Stone
As the Russian Minister spoke, the Meeting Room erupted in laughter, and the French Minister nearly stormed out in anger, almost overturning the table in the process...
The morning quickly slipped away in endless arguments. Ivan noticed that Pierce seemed disinterested as well. Though he didn't directly oppose the idea, he also didn't explicitly show support.
The only one truly eager to push the matter forward was the French Ministry of Magic...
As the clock approached noon, the meeting was temporarily adjourned. Wilkinson set the next session for 9 a.m. the following day and had the Goblin Attendant guide the representatives to the Common Room.
"Is that it for the morning meeting?" Ivan couldn't help but wonder, feeling it was a waste of time.
Pierce shook his head and, after glancing at the Goblin leading them, leaned in to explain in a low voice. Important matters like this couldn't be resolved in a single meeting. The truly significant discussions would take place in private during the afternoon and evening.
After all, only in private could they discuss more sensitive topics. If the major magical nations could reach an agreement, the next meeting would go smoothly. Otherwise, it would have to be delayed another day.
"Don't be fooled by the Russian Minister of Magic and the Asian Association President's lack of enthusiasm about forming an Alliance. In reality, they are just using this as a bargaining chip...
Grindelwald's actions threaten the entire Wizarding World, so forming an Alliance is inevitable. However, the urgency varies. The European Continent is the most affected, so they can't afford to wait, which means they need to contribute more funds and take on more responsibility...
Additionally, many details need to be ironed out in private, such as the number of personnel each country will send and who will command the forces. These are crucial issues that can't be discussed openly."
Pierce explained in detail. Having served as the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement for over a decade, he might not be the most powerful wizard, but he was well-versed in political matters.
So that's why I hate politics... Ivan sighed, feeling incredibly relieved that he hadn't become the Minister of Magic. He didn't want to waste his time on such tedious and trivial matters.
"Later this afternoon, I plan to meet with the Asian President to discuss his stance and then talk to a few North American Representatives. Would you like to join me?" Pierce asked.
"No, thanks. Just let me know the results when you get back." Ivan declined, preferring to spend his free time reading more books.
Percy, on the other hand, was in high spirits. He thrived in such political meetings. During the brief time in the audience, he had already struck up conversations with several North African Wizards. Now, he volunteered to fulfill his duties as an assistant, offering to accompany Pierce as a scribe.
However, Pierce wasn't entirely satisfied with Percy and found a reason to replace him with Delius.
"Masters, this is your room. If you need anything, just press this red button, and someone will come to assist you", the Goblin said, leading Ivan and the others into a Common Room and pointing to a red button on the wall.
Despite being called a room, it was more like a small house. The space was divided into two levels, with five bedrooms, two bathrooms, a Reception Hall, and all the necessary household items.
After a morning of endless bickering, Pierce was quite exhausted. After lunch, he retreated to his room for a rest, planning to deal with the Wizards' representatives later in the evening.
Ivan had the bedroom to himself. He took a small trunk from the Goblin Attendant and pulled out several thick books.
However, these books had little to do with magic. They were all the information he had gathered over the past few days about the Deathly Hallows.
Among these sources were official and generally reliable books like the British Magic Chronicles and Modern European Notables, as well as many unofficial histories, novels, and even more outlandish legends and tales.
In the available materials, the Elder Wand was mentioned the most frequently. Almost every few decades or even a century, Wizards would die over it, or claim to possess the most powerful wand. Compiling these references could yield a fairly complete list of the Elder Wand's lineage.
In contrast, there was very little information about the Invisibility Cloak. Unlike the Elder Wand, which changed hands frequently, the Invisibility Cloak remained within the Peverell and Potter families. Additionally, there were many invisible magic items on the market, so it didn't stand out much to the average person. Consequently, there were few records about it.
The situation with the Resurrection Stone was similar to that of the Invisibility Cloak. Apart from the fairy tale book, there was almost no related information. Out of desperation, Ivan opened the Gaunt Family Pedigree that Pierce had obtained for him, hoping to find any clues.
"Head of the Family died young?" Ivan gently traced the old parchment, looking at the names marked on it, and fell into deep thought.
From the information provided by this family tree, it seemed that the previous few generations of the Gaunt family's heads of the family had very short lives, none of them living past fifty. This was highly unusual among Wizards, who generally lived much longer. Some even died mysteriously just a year after becoming the head of the family, as if under a curse.
"The cause of death is... suicide!" Ivan read the alarming words, feeling a chill run down his spine.
This wasn't just a Resurrection Stone; it was a cursed stone!
Ivan didn't believe this was a coincidence. In the Tale of the Three Brothers, the second brother had committed suicide due to the Resurrection Stone.
But why did the subsequent family members remain unharmed?
Ivan believed that a certain generation of the Gaunt patriarch had realized the terrifying nature of the Resurrection Stone but couldn't bear to discard such a valuable treasure. So, he created a ring to seal the stone's power, even taking the method of using it to his grave to prevent future generations from suffering the same fate.
This also explained why the last generation of the Gaunt family knew nothing about the Resurrection Stone.
Ivan pondered for a moment, then slowly reached for his neck, pulling out a silver pendant from under his collar. At the bottom of the pendant was a coin-sized disk, with a diamond-shaped crystal embedded in the center—the Resurrection Stone!
