Chapter 93: Officer's Fairy Tale
Chapter 93: Officer's Fairy Tale
Siva strode forward, passing through Commercial Street and returning to the amusement park. He entered the heavily guarded castle where layers of sentries stood watch.
Inside the palace, the interior blazed with light, as bright as midday. A wide avenue stretched ahead, flanked by armored guards standing motionless—either statues or real men clad in armor. At the avenue’s end rose a grand staircase, atop which sat three thrones. Two thrones stood at the rear, while one occupied the front. The rear thrones were empty, but the forward throne held a lone figure lounging with nonchalance.
Siva advanced step by step, reaching the foot of the staircase. With a dramatic sweep of his wide cloak, he revealed his muscular physique. He was not lean but radiated raw power. His expression remained solemn, devoid of smiles.
Kneeling on one knee, he bowed his head toward the throne. "Prince, your highness."
The figure above was none other than the Prince of Pleasure, who casually propped his head on one hand, gazing lazily at Siva.
"Oh, it's Siva. How are the Navy boys doing?"
"They cannot resist Your Highness's charm", Siva replied gravely.
"True enough."
The Prince of Pleasure lifted a mirror, tossing his hair back with a flourish. Admiring his reflection, he murmured self-admiringly, "What unmatched charm I possess! When it comes to allure, none can rival this Prince."
"Indeed, none can rival Prince’s majesty."
Two figures entered the palace hall. One was Kai Shao, recognizable even without his cloak, now clad in a sleek black security uniform. The other wore a white lab coat and tiny round sunglasses, his gaunt yet towering frame resembling a bamboo pole. A sinister smirk played on his lips.
Kneeling at the foot of the stairs, they addressed the Prince. "Your Highness."
"You've arrived", the Prince acknowledged. "Have you found that girl yet?"
Kai Shao shook his head. "We've mobilized forces, but the poverty-stricken districts are vast. We don't know where she's hiding."
"Accelerate the search", the Prince ordered. "The World Conference is two years away. The World Government will soon verify Morgant's eligibility to attend. Don't let that brat ruin my plans."
Kai Shao bowed lower. "Understood."
"Dr. A Kas", the Prince turned to the third figure. "How are the pills progressing?"
Dr. A Kas bowed with a sardonic grin. "My most exalted master, the 'Happiness Pill' production is complete. We can distribute them anytime."
"And the quality?"
"Rave reviews across the underworld. After all, these are divine artifacts for forgetting all worries", Dr. A Kas declared.
"Excellent. Mix them with the next batch of grain shipments."
The Prince rose, clenching his fist toward the void ahead. "My friends, let us unite to make Morgant even greater!"
The three bowed in unison. "Yes, Your Highness!"
...
By night, Commercial Street grew quieter, its daytime vibrancy fading.
Morgant’s nights were largely off-limits. The amusement park closed, shops shuttered, and children’s fairy tales and joys vanished. Yet another kind of fairy tale remained—the officer’s brand of twisted joy.
Kuro resolved to investigate. This place reeked of abnormality, steeped in "Evil." The night’s Commercial Street practically oozed malice. As a Justicenavy officer, he had no choice but to confront this darkness.
Besides, he wasn’t a saint. How could he resist exploring such an intriguing locale?
Now, however, an obstacle blocked his path.
"Where do you think you’re going?" Lida asked, eyes sharp with suspicion.
"To investigate Evil, of course", Kuro declared. "Morgant’s oddities demand scrutiny. As a Navy officer, a symbol of Justice, I must act!"
Klah pushed up her glasses, blushing faintly. "Indeed, Kuromr., we must investigate Evil."
"Ha? Since when did you become so diligent?" Lida scoffed.
"What do you mean? I’m Navy through and through! You go rest. This isn’t a place for you tonight. You’ve got daytime duties to handle", Kuro countered.
"Fine…" Lida hesitated, then turned to leave.
"Wait!" Kuro suddenly called. "Lida—come with me."
"Eh? You’re taking me?" she asked, bewildered.
Klah’s eyes widened. Was Kuro inviting Lida to experience this adult fairy tale? Though Lida had come of age, Kuro had never treated her as such before.
Klah shot Kuro a look of pure disdain.
"Let’s shelve the Evil investigation", Kuro said, turning toward an alley and lighting a cigar. "Someone interesting seems to be approaching."
...
"Ha ha!"
In Commercial Street’s dark alleys, a little girl sprinted through the shadows.
Bang!
She collided with a trash can, tumbling forward until the bin engulfed her tiny frame.
"Where did she go?!"
A squad of guards burst into the alley, scanning both sides before charging ahead.
After silence settled, the girl cautiously lifted the trash can lid, peered around, then exhaled in relief. Tightening her grip on an object, she revealed a ragged cloth bundle hiding several stale buns with bite marks.
"It's still here."
Treating the bundle like a priceless treasure, she wrapped it again and tucked it into her chest. She’d scavenged these buns from the trash—this street was her only food source. The amusement park was too risky; its visibility was a liability.
"With this food, I can feed Mom and Dad. They must eat, or they’ll die…" Steeling herself, she stood to return deeper into the alley.
"Hey there."
A voice cut through the darkness.
A shadow, silhouetted by Commercial Street’s glow, loomed over her.
She stiffened, turning to see Kai Shao in his cloak and chef’s tall hat, flanked by guards.
"Enjoying hide-and-seek, little girl?" Kai Shao smirked, advancing. "We were supposed to take it easy, but the Prince issued orders. We’ve been waiting for you."
He stepped closer, towering over her. "Face it—you have nowhere else to go but this street."
Instinctively clutching her chest, she staggered backward. Suddenly, anger flared in her eyes.
"You demon!" she spat.
"Aww, still unmedicated, huh?" Kai Shao extended a hand. "Come now, be obedient. Once the Prince ‘grants mercy,’ you’ll have no more of these silly emotions. You’ll live a blissful, happy life."
