Chapter 93: Jiang Xia's Hand is a Golden Touch
Chapter 93: Jiang Xia’s Hand is a Golden Touch
Mr. Zhou closed the courtyard gate and sat down by the well. "Let's open the pearl oysters!"
His tone was noticeably less cheerful than before.
Mrs. Zhou, who had just finished washing the dishes, asked, "Did the Zhou Bingqiang family buy another boat?"
Zhou Bingqiang had a loud voice, and everyone had heard him.
Mr. Zhou pretended not to care. "If they bought it, so what? It's none of our business."
But despite his words, Mr. Zhou was envious. With three fishing boats out at sea, how much money could they make every day? In the future, wouldn't their grandson be showing off to him all the time?
However, they didn't have the means. Lei didn't have a house or any children.
Living in this house during storms was nerve-wracking, and they needed to build a new one eventually. Any money they earned would go into that.
A fishing boat cost several thousand, even tens of thousands of yuan, and the price went up every year. Saving enough money to buy a boat was incredibly difficult!
He could only sigh at his misfortune!
Cheng Lei said, "Dad, tomorrow Jiang Xia and I plan to visit the shipyard and order a boat."
Mr. Zhou's eyes lit up. "Do you have enough money?"
"An average-sized boat should be about right."
Mr. Zhou immediately perked up. "Tomorrow, I'll go with you. Finish opening the pearl oysters, and then go to bed early tonight."
Mrs. Zhou smiled. "Then hurry up and open them!"
Mr. Zhou happily picked up a pearl oyster from the burlap bag and began to pry it open.
However, the first pearl oyster he opened had no pearl.
Mr. Zhou: "..."
"It grew so big and has no pearl!"
He looked at Cheng Lei with disappointment.
As soon as Cheng Lei pried open his pearl oyster, he saw a white pearl nestled in the meat.
Jiang Xia smiled. "It looks quite big, I wonder if it has any flaws."
Mr. Zhou also smiled. "It does look big! Quickly, take it out and check for flaws."
Cheng Lei carefully extracted the pearl and washed it in the saltwater bowl. "It has a small flaw."
Jiang Xia: "Let me see."
Cheng Lei handed her the pearl.
Jiang Xia took it and examined it closely. The white pearl had a subtle pinkish glow, with a lustrous and full color. It was perfectly round, about 10mm in size, and the small flaw was almost negligible.
Most wild, natural pearls had flaws, while cultured pearls had fewer flaws and a better luster.
This one was of high quality. Since pearls used for jewelry often required drilling, the small flaw could be easily hidden.
She handed it back to Mr. Zhou, who examined it with a beaming smile. "Haha, not bad. It's so big, with few flaws. It should be worth thirty to forty yuan."
Mr. Zhou felt his luck wasn't good and said, "Xia, pick a pearl oyster. I'll open it. You have good luck."
Jiang Xia laughed at Mr. Zhou's words. "Dad, it doesn't matter who holds it. If there's a pearl, it would have grown inside already."
Mr. Zhou: "But before it's opened, it does matter! Lei's pearl oyster was touched by you, and it turned out to be a good pearl!"
Cheng Lei: "Yeah, you have good luck. Pick one for me too."
Jiang Xia's lips twitched, amused by the two of them. She picked a pearl oyster for each of them.
Mr. Zhou happily pried open his oyster and then gasped!
"Haha... I told you, Xia has good luck!"
Jiang Xia’s hand was like a golden touch!
Jiang Xia and Cheng Lei both looked over.
Mr. Zhou had extracted a golden pearl, larger than the one Cheng Lei had found.
It was about 12mm in size, a beautiful golden color, smooth and shiny, with a radiant luster.
"This one has no flaws at all!" Mr. Zhou pinched it in his hand, grinning like he was holding a priceless treasure.
He showed it to Mrs. Zhou, who smiled. "This one is good. The golden color is beautiful, like gold."
Elders often favored golden objects, finding white ones less appealing.
Zhou Chenglei also extracted two pearls, both white with a hint of pinkish luster. They were identical in size, with only minor, barely noticeable flaws. They could be used to make rings, earrings, or pendants, and the flaws would be easily hidden.
Jiang Xia: "These look like twins. I'll put them together. When I sell them, I'll tell the buyer they came from the same pearl oyster. Maybe we can get more money for them."
Zhou Father: "That's a good point. I knew you had good luck. Let's do it again!"
Jiang Xia handed another pearl oyster to both of them.
Zhou Chenglei took the oyster Jiang Xia passed him, a large and heavy one.
He pried it open but didn't see any pearls.
Zhou Father glanced at it: "A shell this big shouldn't be empty, right?"
Zhou Chenglei pinched the white flesh of the oyster and felt something hard. He extracted a gray-black pearl, round and semi-translucent, over 12mm in size!
"This one's great!" Jiang Xia exclaimed, her eyes lighting up.
Zhou Father took a look: "A black pearl! Rare! Let's check for flaws."
"None," Zhou Chenglei said, washing the pearl in a bucket and then in a bowl before handing it to Jiang Xia.
Jiang Xia examined the pearl closely under the light. The black-green pearl refracted a rainbow of colors, with a soft luster, fine texture, and a crystalline, full roundness.
Black pearls are rare, and Jiang Xia felt this one would definitely fetch a good price.
Jiang Xia handed another pearl oyster to both of them.
This time, Zhou Father opened an oyster that contained two pearls: one was a large, misshapen pearl, and the other was a small, round one.
Zhou Father: "What a pity. This one is so big, but it's misshapen."
He cleaned the pearls and placed them back in the shell.
Jiang Xia, however, thought the baroque shape was beautiful and the color was stunning. She smiled: "These are called baroque pearls. Foreigners love them. They can be used to make pendants, brooches, and other accessories."
Zhou Father immediately thought the baroque pearl was particularly beautiful! He realized that without this knowledge, he might have sold it for much less. "Sell it to the foreigners and earn some foreign currency!"
Jiang Xia smiled.
The next few pearls Zhou Father and Zhou Chenglei opened were not very large but not small either, ranging from 7-8mm. Most had minor flaws, but a few were tiny pearls, and one was a large, over 12mm pearl, pink with no flaws and a beautiful, unique pink luster.
Marine pearls are relatively rare, with most oysters producing only 1-2 pearls. Wild marine pearls are nucleated, larger, and more perfectly round, but they often have surface flaws, and perfect ones are rare.
Zhou Chenglei had picked the largest and oldest oysters, which had a high pearl yield. Out of all the oysters they opened, only one had no pearls. The pearls they did find were of high quality, round, with beautiful luster and minimal flaws. Only a few had obvious flaws and poor luster, making them less valuable and suitable only for grinding into powder.
Soon, they had opened over thirty pearl oysters, and the largest one remained. Zhou Chenglei picked it up.
Zhou Father slapped his hand: "Xia hasn't touched it yet. What are you doing?"
Zhou Chenglei: "..."
Zhou Chenglei looked at Jiang Xia: "Do you want to try?"
Zhou Father immediately agreed: "Yes, Xia, you do it!"
Jiang Xia, having watched them for a while, knew how to open the oysters. She nodded: "Okay, I'll give it a try."
"Be careful, don't hurt your hand," Zhou Chenglei said, handing her the tools.
Jiang Xia took the pearl oyster and the small knife, mimicking Zhou Chenglei's technique by inserting the knife into the shell.
Zhou Chenglei watched nervously, afraid she might slip and cut herself. He held her hand and helped her open it.
Here we go, here we go, here we go again! Such a loving couple, it's almost time for him to be a relic.
Zhou Father immediately straightened up, adopting a proper posture!
