Chapter 928: The New Professor's First Class
Chapter 928: The New Professor's First Class
As Ivan walked into the classroom, the bell signaling the start of class rang out. The sixth-year students were already seated, and dozens of eyes turned to look at him.
"Good morning, everyone!" Ivan walked straight to the front of the room, gazing at the students below with a calm expression. "Although we're all familiar with each other, let's follow tradition and start with introductions. I am your new professor for the Magic Research and Practice class..."
"What do you plan to teach us in this class, Professor Hals... Professor, we haven't received any new textbooks!" A Hufflepuff wizard suddenly raised his hand, curious and eager to know.
"That's a good question! Since this is a new course this year, there are no corresponding textbooks yet. This means that in my class, you should bring your notebooks and write down all the important points!" Ivan said calmly.
However, most of the students didn't react much, except for Hermione and a few other diligent students who took out their quills and parchment.
Ivan noticed this and added, "I believe this knowledge will be useful for your exams!"
This time, the classroom filled with the sound of students quickly placing their notebooks on their desks. No one wanted to risk their final exams.
"As for the content of this class, it will be divided into two parts: practical exercises and magical theory research", Ivan explained, pausing briefly before continuing. "I'm sure you've all read the Daily Prophet over the past two years and know that the wizarding world is not at peace. Even last year, Hogwarts was attacked... So I hope you all take this class seriously, so you can better protect yourselves in dangerous situations."
Neville, Ron, and others couldn't help but shiver at the mention of the attack. They had been there when Grindelwald assaulted Hogwarts, and the memory still haunted them.
"Alright, since there are no other questions, let's begin the class!" Ivan scanned the room, his gaze passing over each student. "Does anyone know the specific steps involved in casting a spell?"
Immediately, a pale arm shot up, faster than anyone else's.
"Hermione, you can answer!" Ivan said with a smile.
"It's the wand, the spell, and the gesture!" Hermione replied loudly.
Ivan nodded, but then asked, "Which of these do you think is the most important?"
The young witch was taken aback, frowning as she thought for a moment but couldn't come up with an answer.
"I think it's the wand... If a wizard's wand is disarmed during a duel, they can't cast any spells anymore!" Hannah Abbott called out, raising her hand.
"Is that so? Do you really believe that?" Ivan glanced at Hannah and placed his hand on the desk.
In the next moment, under everyone's watchful eyes, the meter-high lectern began to melt and transform. Within seconds, a beautiful lion statue appeared in the classroom.
Only then did Ivan respond, "Clearly, you're not entirely correct, Miss Hannah Abbott. As you just saw, I didn't have a wand, yet I still successfully performed a transfiguration!"
Hannah's eyes widened as she stared at the lion statue in front of her, utterly amazed. This was the first time she had seen someone cast Magic without a wand.
Harry, Neville, Malfoy, and the others were equally astonished. Hermione, however, remained composed. She had seen Ivan's Wandless Casting technique before, which was why she hadn't rushed to provide an answer earlier.
"Could it be the spell? If a Wizard mispronounces the spell, they can't cast Magic correctly..." Ron said uncertainly.
Before Ivan could respond, Hermione interjected, "That's not it. Many Wizards can perform Wandless Magic, so the spell isn't the most crucial part!"
"Then it can't be the Casting Gesture, right?" Ron muttered, puzzled. Since Ivan didn't need a wand, the gesture changes were even less necessary!
The Students in the classroom began to whisper among themselves, but no one could come up with a definitive answer. They all turned to Ivan, waiting for his explanation.
"It's simple. The wand, spell, and gesture are not the key to casting!" Ivan announced straightforwardly.
The Students opened their mouths to protest. They had been learning the necessary spells and Casting Gestures at Hogwarts, and now Ivan was telling them that these were not important?
It was hard for them to accept, but Ivan had just demonstrated Wandless Casting in front of everyone, proving his point.
"What is the key to casting Magic, then?" Harry raised his hand, curious.
Ivan didn't answer directly but asked a counter-question. "Harry, do you remember how you made the glass at the zoo disappear before you came to Hogwarts? You didn't have a wand then, and you didn't know any spells."
Harry was momentarily stumped by Ivan's question and finally stammered, "I... I don't know... I just wanted to free that Serpent..."
As he spoke, Harry suddenly realized something. He looked at Ivan and said eagerly, "Could it be that I wanted to save it so badly that the glass disappeared?"
"Exactly. Strong desire triggers Magic, allowing you to cast unconsciously", Ivan explained. He then turned to the rest of the class. "I'm sure you all had similar experiences during your first Magic surge!"
"When I was eight, a dog chased me, and my Magic surge turned it into a parrot", a Ravenclaw girl said.
The other young Wizards also shared their unique first Magic surge stories, realizing they had inadvertently performed Wandless Casting.
"So, we don't need to buy spells or learn spells and gestures. Why does the school still teach us these things?" Hannah was thoroughly confused.
Ivan smiled and replied, "It's very meaningful. The steps in casting reduce the difficulty for Wizards and make your Magic more precise!"
