Chapter 92: The Trap
Chapter 92: The Trap
As Chen Chuan and Fang Dawei engaged in combat below the fort, Spider-Man Lao Qi was crawling out of a hidden passage.
When Tong Baotao was killed, Lao Qi lost his will to fight as he knew the remaining men stood no chance against Chen Chuan, especially with the Patrol Bureau officers approaching.
Seeing that Fang Dawei was also defeated, Lao Qi wasted no time and fled through the secret passage he had discovered earlier, using it as an escape route.
His unique physique made him hard to detect, and he could easily sneak out, hide in the bushes, and escape under the cover of darkness.
The secret passage was narrow, allowing only one person of average build to pass through, but for him, it was no issue. He adhered to the rock wall and crawled outward.
He proceeded cautiously, taking a few steps at a time, ensuring safety before continuing.
Moving slowly, he soon reached the exit and waited a while longer to confirm it was safe. Then, with agility, he darted out.
Just as he was halfway out, a sudden pistol thrust from the side pinned him to the rock wall, causing him to struggle in agony.
Wu Xuelang emerged from the side, excitedly saying, "I've been waiting for you guys for a while now. As expected, someone's escaping through here. Chen Chuan, you were right about this."
Earlier, Chen Chuan had arranged for Wu Xuelang to guard this secret passage without alerting the others. If any of Fang Dawei's men tried to escape through the passage, Wu Xuelang was to intercept them.
Others might have doubted such a plan, but Wu Xuelang had complete faith, even willing to risk his life in a fight. With such dedication, how could he not be trusted? While waiting, others might have been anxious and restless, but Wu Xuelang remained focused. Since arriving, his movements had been consistent, and his breathing was in a near-hibernating, restrained state, which prevented Lao Qi from detecting him.
Seeing Lao Qi still alive, Wu Xuelang's face twisted in disgust. He raised his leg, channeled his force, and with a crisp crack, snapped Lao Qi's neck.
Inside the fort, Chen Chuan kicked Fang Dawei off the ledge, and the rope around his neck tightened, causing his eyes to roll back as he struggled. The more he struggled, the tighter the rope constricted, and after a few minutes, he became still.
Lin Yisheng, the doctor, looked up at Chen Chuan on the second floor and asked curiously, "You killed him, aren't you afraid the Ink Orchid Corporation will come after you?"
Chen Chuan's gaze lowered, and he replied calmly, "So, you're Doctor Lin? If you're not afraid, why should I be?"
"I see," Doctor Lin nodded, understanding. "That's right, but I'm different from you. I'm an external implant doctor hired by the Ink Orchid Corporation." He took out a name card from his coat pocket and waved it at Chen Chuan. "Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Lin Fa."
"An implant doctor for the Ink Orchid Corporation?"
"Yes."
Lin Fa put the name card away and pointed at the mutilated bodies on the ground. "Do you know where these implants came from?"
He smiled, "The Ink Orchid Corporation selects criminals annually for experiments to develop new implants. To test and collect data, they release these prisoners into the wild periodically, allowing hunters to pursue them or sending them to hunt others.
Of course, most of the time, they are the hunted, as the hunters are well-protected, being the offspring of the powerful.
The powerful call this 'hunting,' but sometimes, prey escapes. However, the Ink Orchid Corporation isn't concerned; it's just a minor inconvenience. They can always recapture the escaped prisoners after observing them for a while."
Chen Chuan descended from above and stood before Doctor Lin, who sighed and said, "Yes, for someone like Fang Dawei, this is a secret, but which influential figure doesn't know about it? Even if the news gets out, so what? Not just in Yangzhi City, but even in Central City, who can do anything to the Ink Orchid Corporation?"
His voice filled with admiration and longing as he continued, "They are a behemoth, dividing the world among nations and these giant corporations. They are the true rulers of this world."
Chen Chuan looked at him and asked, "Then what about you? Why were you with Fang Dawei? Were you just treating their injuries, or did you have another task?"
Doctor Lin smiled, "I was with them to examine their bodies, observe and record the daily changes and combat performance of their implants, and collect some biological materials for my little experiments..."
He pushed up his glasses and turned to Chen Chuan with keen interest. "Actually... your fight with them was truly fascinating. I saw many things I had overlooked or never noticed before.
I will record these observations and submit them to the Ink Orchid Corporation. I believe I'll be rewarded and maybe even transferred to the implant laboratory. Yes, it might be a good idea to bring in some fighters to participate in the experiments..."
As he spoke, a flash of sword energy lit up the fort, freezing his expression. A gurgling sound escaped his throat as he knelt, desperately trying to cover the gaping wound on his neck with his hands.
Chen Chuan strode out, his calm demeanor belying the question he posed, "What made you think you could escape?"
Lin Yisheng lay sprawled on the ground, watching Chen Chuan's retreating figure, a long blade in hand, as he approached the fort's exit, bathed in white light. Chen Chuan's silhouette, backlit by the afternoon sun, headed towards a realm of brightness, while his consciousness slowly detached, sinking into darkness.
As Chen Chuan emerged from the fort, the afternoon sun shone upon him. Wei Laohu and the patrol officers from the Patrol Bureau looked on with a mix of surprise and concern, eagerly awaiting his response.
Chen Chuan nodded towards the direction of the fort.
Wei Laohu raised his pistol and shouted, "Go!" He was the first to rush into the fort, followed closely by the other patrol officers.
Chen Chuan walked forward, reaching the edge of the platform, where he stood with his long sword in hand. He gazed at the vast, endless sky ahead, as one by one, the patrol officers passed by him, rushing into the fort.
In this world, everyone lives within a web of connections, woven by themselves or others, layer upon layer, confining them within. Yet, they only interact with a fraction of this network, a human-made division, not the true world. They cannot see the vastness beyond their limited sphere.
Some, however, observe from above, watching as those below fight and scramble within their self-defined circles.
Chen Chuan extended his hand, clenching it into a tight fist before his face. He remembered his initial motivation for choosing the path of a fighter—to constantly surpass himself, to become stronger, and ultimately, to break free from all restraints.
This resolve remained unchanged. He would strive to become powerful enough to acquire the strength to break free from all constraints!
Upon entering the fort, Wei Laohu surveyed the gruesome scene of dismembered body parts scattered on the ground and Fang Dawei, still hanging and swaying. Without a headcount, he was certain this gang was all accounted for.
Suddenly, he felt uncomfortably hot and stuffy. He fanned himself and wiped the sweat from his face, muttering, "Damn, my nephew has brought me face. What a proud moment!"
He grabbed a nearby patrol officer and instructed, "Go, quickly inform the bureau that we've secured this place! Yeah, every single one of them was taken down by Xiao Chuan alone!"
At the command post, Guan Yuming received the report. After repeatedly confirming the authenticity of the news, he maintained a calm exterior, but his hand clenched into a fist. He thought, "Good job, he actually did it!"
He glanced at his watch, calculating that it had been half an hour since they left and returned with the news.
Pondering for a moment, he picked up the phone and dialed a number within the bureau. When the call connected, he said, "Hello, Commissioner? It's Guan Yuming."
"Guan, no need for explanations. The Ink Orchid Corporation's people will be here soon, so recall your team immediately. Leaving so many of your men outside has left the city vulnerable."
Guan Yuming replied, "Commissioner, I was just about to inform you that the matter is resolved."
"Resolved? Did the Ink Orchid Corporation arrive early?"
"No, it's our people, our Patrol Bureau's descendants, Wu University's students. One of them single-handedly stormed the fort and took down Fang Dawei's gang."
There was a prolonged silence on the other end, as if processing this information. Finally, the voice said, "Our Patrol Bureau's descendants?"
"Yes, he's Nian Lifu's nephew."
"Nian Lifu's nephew, huh? Back when I was a battalion commander, he was my messenger. If he's Nian's nephew, then he must be reliable."
Guan Yuming said, "Commissioner, this student from Wu Yi Academy was on a designated assignment, but after learning that the councilor's son was found, the assignment was withdrawn. Most of the Wu Yi students left, but Nian's nephew, Xiao Chuan, stayed behind. He single-handedly infiltrated the fort with just one weapon. I don't need to explain why he stayed."
The other end of the line exclaimed in admiration, "Good job, kid! Impressive! Let me know what you want, but don't be too demanding."
Guan Yuming said, "Here's what I'm thinking. Although his designated assignment was canceled, it doesn't have to be."
"Not cancel it?"
Guan Yuming spoke seriously, "Not all of Fang Dawei's gang is dead; some are severely injured. We all know what happened, but we can also choose to be ignorant. In exchange, Xiao Chuan must complete the designated assignment!"
The voice on the other end was decisive, "Since he's our Patrol Bureau's descendant, I'll put my reputation on the line. Guan, you take care of your team and return quickly. I'll handle the negotiations. Goodbye."
Guan Yuming slowly hung up the phone and pressed it down on the receiver. He looked outside, his expression grave. The designated assignment wasn't the most important thing; it was a gesture to show the outside world that the Patrol Bureau was protecting this person.
