Chapter 915: The Death Eater's Fear, Professor McGonagall's Breach of School Rules
Chapter 915: The Death Eater's Fear, Professor McGonagall's Breach of School Rules
"I'm sorry, Professor McGonagall, it seems you didn't quite understand us."
In Hogwarts, a slightly hunched, weasel-faced little wizard stood before Professor McGonagall with an air of arrogance, looking up at her.
"Last night, the representatives from the Ministry of Magic and the Hogwarts Board of Governors held a meeting, and we unanimously agreed that you are no longer fit for the position of Headmaster."
"Oh?"
Professor McGonagall glanced at him with a calm expression, "If it's indeed the Ministry's decision, why isn't Amelia Bones here?"
"She has other matters to attend to and can't come for now," said the little wizard.
"Then wait until she's free and come talk to me," Professor McGonagall waved her hand impatiently, "I don't cling to this position, but the replacement of the Hogwarts Headmaster is a significant matter, not something a Director of the Department of Magical Games and Sports can decide on his own."
"What did you say?" The little wizard seemed insulted, but he quickly calmed down and said, "However, the Board of Governors has agreed, and compared to that, the Minister's opinion doesn't seem that important, does it!"
He took out a piece of parchment filled with names.
"Do you want me to read it to you?" The little wizard said proudly, "By unanimous decision of the Board of Governors, Professor Millerva McGonagall is relieved of her position as Headmaster, and Severus Snape will take over."
Professor McGonagall's face darkened, not expecting the Board to cause trouble at this time.
But she still didn't care, looking disdainfully at the little wizard as if he were some dirty object.
"The Board does have the right to remove the Headmaster," she said.
"Since you know that, it's good," the little wizard sneered.
"But..." Professor McGonagall continued, "As far as I know, to exercise this right, all twelve Board members must agree, but the parchment you have..."
She glanced at the parchment, "It seems to have only nine signatures, which is quite a few short."
"So, unfortunately, the content on this parchment is completely useless."
"You, damn you..." The little wizard was a bit flustered and took two steps forward, "You should recognize the situation, Professor McGonagall. Dumbledore is no longer here to back you up. If you don't listen to me, everyone in the school will suffer the consequences."
"Squeak!"
The door to the Headmaster's Office opened, and Kyle entered from outside.
"I just heard someone mention consequences. Is Hogwarts lunch so delicious that you want to take it away?" Kyle asked.
"Who are you!" The little wizard turned around and said harshly, "Get out, or you're dead."
"Oh, I recognize you," Kyle looked at his face and thought for a moment, "It must be Hestia Island, right? How are you still alive?"
"Really, it's my fault," Kyle shook his head in annoyance.
The little wizard finally recognized Kyle, and the anger on his face instantly turned into fear.
He, of course, remembered Kyle, and the memory was deep, or perhaps any Death Eater who had been to Hestia Island would recognize him.
The Dark Lord had shown them Kyle's appearance and issued a command to kill him.
Since joining the Death Eaters, it was the first time he had seen the Dark Lord so intent on killing someone, even almost destroying an entire island.
Even now, he could still remember how the entire island was surrounded by fierce flames.
Unfortunately, almost all the Death Eaters who remembered this incident had died, with only a few lucky ones escaping the disaster.
He was one of the lucky ones.
But he never imagined that he would see Kyle again, and in such a situation.
"You... you..." He pointed at Kyle, fear in his eyes, stammering.
"What, don't you remember me?" Kyle stepped forward, smiling at him, "It's understandable, my ordinary appearance doesn't leave a lasting impression. It's normal if you don't recall."
"But we are somewhat acquainted. Do me a favor and be polite to Professor McGonagall."
The little Death Eater broke into a cold sweat, especially as he saw Kyle holding his wand.
Professor McGonagall was puzzled. She wondered why this arrogant Death Eater suddenly became so timid and introverted upon seeing Kyle.
Kyle continued to walk forward, one step, then two.
Each step felt like a stomp on the little Death Eater's heart, and finally, his instinct overcame his fear, and he raised his wand high.
"Avada Kedavra..."
The raised arm dropped, and the light at the wand tip dimmed. The little Death Eater stood there, dazed and motionless.
"I guess I'm still not suited for using such Dark Magic," Kyle looked at his wand, recalling the awkwardness he felt while casting the spell, and shook his head helplessly.
"Kyle!" Professor McGonagall grabbed her chest and whispered, "What did you do..."
"As you can see, Professor, he recognized me," Kyle said, "If I hadn't acted first, the Dark Mark might have appeared in the Hogwarts sky by now."
Professor McGonagall recalled the little Death Eater's actions... indeed, it was the Dark Mark's curse.
"What's going on here!" She forced herself to stay calm and asked, "Why is the Head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports coming to Hogwarts, gathering nine Board members to remove me from my position?"
"I don't know," Kyle shrugged.
He had been teaching his Ancient Runes class when Armando Dippet, the Headmaster of Beauxbatons, suddenly appeared in the Ancient Runes classroom painting, informing him that someone was causing trouble in the Headmaster's Office.
And so, Kyle arrived, just in time to hear the little wizard's threat at the door... about making everyone suffer the consequences.
It turned out that the person was someone familiar.
When Kyle had infiltrated the Hestia Islands disguised as a Death Eater, this man had been standing not far ahead of him, and Kyle vaguely remembered him.
"Oh no, the Ministry of Magic," Professor McGonagall exclaimed, startled, and her tension rose.
Had the Ministry of Magic been occupied by them?
Professor McGonagall stumbled back a few steps, collapsing into a chair, tightly clutching the collar of her robe.
Kyle's expression also turned grim.
"It's okay, maybe he's just trying to scare us. Although I don't know what happened, we can take a look now."
He raised his wand again, pointing it at the Death Eater.
"Legilimency!"
Fortunately, this Death Eater wasn't skilled in Occlumency, and Kyle managed to force a dose of Veritaserum down his throat.
Memories flooded in like a tide, and Kyle quickly skimmed through them. After a moment, he heaved a sigh of relief.
"What...?" Professor McGonagall asked anxiously.
To be honest, she didn't dare to look.
She couldn't imagine what would become of the British Wizarding World if the Ministry of Magic had indeed been occupied by Death Eaters.
"It's okay, Professor." Kyle said softly, "The Death Eaters have only occupied half of the Ministry, Minister Amelia Bones is still alive, and the Aurors and Hit Wizards are on our side."
"Phew..." Professor McGonagall relaxed, taking a few deep breaths.
"That's good... So what happened!"
"It can't be explained in a few words, you should see it for yourself." Kyle pressed his wand against the Death Eater's forehead, gently pulling out a shimmering strand of memory.
Professor McGonagall's eyes twitched.
With the memory extraction, along with the previous use of the Imperius Curse and Legilimency, Kyle had now violated the Wizarding Law three times in a row.
Not the school rules, but the Wizarding Law.
Especially the Imperius Curse, which could land him in Azkaban.
"Oh, sorry." Kyle seemed to realize that his actions were inappropriate, so he stopped and pushed the strand of memory back.
He waved his wand, and a velvet curtain appeared out of thin air, hanging down from the ceiling, perfectly positioned between him and Professor McGonagall.
Professor McGonagall's forehead creased with an additional furrow.
What was this, an attempt to cover up?
"Hahaha!"
A voice from the wall laughed, with Armando Dippet holding his stomach, laughing heartily.
"I knew calling Kyle was the right choice, this is so interesting."
"Indeed." Dumbledore nodded, "He always has unexpected ideas, but they are very effective."
"Hmph, a rule-breaker." Phineas muttered beside them, "Using the Imperius Curse in the Headmaster's Office, what lawlessness! Someone like that shouldn't be a teacher!"
"Huh?" Armando Dippet's expression changed, and he glared, "I called Kyle here, are you questioning my decision?"
Without waiting for Phineas to explain, he brandished a wand, and a wolf-headed cane appeared, which he swung at Phineas.
"Thud!"
"Ouch!"
After the dull thud, there was a cry.
However, the other headmasters didn't stop them, closing their eyes and pretending not to see, just as they had pretended not to see Kyle use the Imperius Curse.
Professor McGonagall's head buzzed, and she struggled to suppress the urge to take down and throw out the window a certain pair of portraits.
She had always thought the portraits in the Headmaster's Office were quite dignified, usually just pretending to sleep, and there hadn't been any abnormal behavior. How had they suddenly become like this?
Could it be that they had been pretending before?
Or perhaps, had something changed after a certain portrait was added...
Professor McGonagall glanced at Dumbledore's portrait on the wall.
Fortunately, the velvet curtain disappeared, and Kyle looked around before taking out a Pensieve from the cabinet, placing the memory from his wand into it.
The memory seemed to swirl like shimmering fish in the Pensieve.
Professor McGonagall naturally knew how to use this, and she leaned in.
The whirlpool took her away from the Headmaster's Office, arriving at the Ministry of Magic, where she witnessed the furious Scrimguard and Minister Amelia Bones confronting the Death Eaters.
Fortunately, it was just as Kyle had described.
Although the Ministry of Magic had undergone some changes, it hadn't been occupied, and Minister Bones was still alive.
Soon, Professor McGonagall emerged from the memory.
"The situation is still quite severe." She looked at the motionless Death Eater beside Kyle and asked, "What will you do with him?"
"Of course, I'll..." Kyle paused before continuing, "...send him to Azkaban."
"But Azkaban has long been unreliable, you know that."
"It's fine." Kyle waved his hand, "I know a place, similar to Azkaban, guarded by Dementors, sending him there will be the same."
"Oh?" Professor McGonagall asked, puzzled, "What place?"
She had lived in Britain for so long, yet she had never heard of different divisions within Azkaban.
"Um, they're pretty much the same." Kyle gave an awkward laugh.
He was referring to the Dementor in his box, which hadn't had a full meal since following him, and Kyle sometimes felt guilty about it.
With this opportunity, Kyle also planned to feed the Dementor properly, giving it a good meal.
So Newt wouldn't accuse him of mistreating the Dementor.
Moreover, this Death Eater might provide other valuable assistance.
"What if I take him into my custody?" Professor McGonagall suggested after a moment's contemplation.
"Huh?"
"You wanted to control him with the Imperius Curse, didn't you? Is it to keep him from informing that unmentionable person about your presence at Hogwarts?" Professor McGonagall bluntly exposed Kyle's intentions.
"No, not exactly. He must already know I'm here," Kyle shook his head, "Maybe this isn't pleasing to you, but some Slytherins have seen me, so Voldemort should know by now."
At the mention of the name, Professor McGonagall tugged at her collar again.
Kyle, however, remained relatively unfazed. He had just discovered something intriguing in the Death Eater's memory.
Voldemort had never shown himself, neither during their attack on the Ministry of Magic nor in any other activities.
Kyle suspected he must be injured.
When they were at Hestia Island, Voldemort had not fully evaded Kyle's powerful Firebolt Arrow.
This was currently Kyle's most potent offensive spell, enhanced by Runic magic and the power of Blazing Fire, making it unlikely for even Voldemort to escape unscathed.
Additionally, during their previous encounter at Godric's Valley, Dumbledore had summoned a lightning bolt that struck Voldemort.
With old and new injuries, Voldemort, being the cautious person he was, would likely not reveal himself again anytime soon.
Dumbledore's previous strategy was to use this situation to lower Voldemort's guard, hoping to lure him out.
However, judging by the current situation, Voldemort seemed even more patient than they had anticipated, not even emerging after Dumbledore's 'death'.
Kyle had been thinking of alternative plans recently.
The Death Eater before him presented a potential opportunity.
If they could capture all the Death Eaters at the Ministry of Magic, Voldemort would likely not be able to hold back any longer.
The plan was risky, though, and could potentially involve Amelia Bones and her team.
"If that's the case, why did you stop him from casting the Dark Mark?" Professor McGonagall suddenly interjected, interrupting Kyle's thoughts.
"The situation was urgent, and I didn't know what spell he was about to use," Kyle explained, spreading his hands, "I thought he was going to cast the Killing Curse, but he was calling for reinforcements instead. What a coward, and he calls himself a Death Eater... Embarrassing."
Professor McGonagall's eyes flickered, feigning ignorance of Kyle's sarcasm.
"Then, what was your intention in controlling him?"
"I don't know," Kyle continued, "I overheard some of your conversation at the door, and I knew he was the Head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports. At the time, I wasn't clear about what was happening at the Ministry, but I thought that controlling him might be useful.
"At the very least, he could return and act as a spy within the Ministry, a thorn in the side of those Death Eaters."
Professor McGonagall furrowed her brow, contemplating Kyle's words seriously. She glanced at the small Death Eater again and, after a long while, shook her head.
"It won't work."
"What?"
"Your Imperius Curse is a bit..." Professor McGonagall chose her words carefully, trying to sound less harsh, "To be honest, the effectiveness of your Imperius Curse is more due to his fear of you. It's unlikely to last long, and he'll soon break free from your control."
As she spoke, the Death Eater's body twitched, and his wand hand began to shake and bend.
These were signs that he was about to break free from the Imperius Curse.
"Alright," Kyle sighed.
There was no other way; his magic was too clean to effectively cast the Imperius Curse, a dark spell that required negative emotions to sustain.
It was a trade-off.
"I'll take him into my custody," Professor McGonagall said, waving her wand. A silver net fell onto the Death Eater, capturing and lifting him into the air.
"If a battle between Hogwarts and the Death Eaters is inevitable, I want us to have the upper hand."
"Moreover, evacuating the students will take time, and until we're fully prepared, I want their attention diverted from Hogwarts."
"Of course, no problem," Kyle agreed, especially since Professor McGonagall had already given her word.
"But he might not cooperate easily. Do I need to find a suitable replacement candidate?"
"I recommend Cedric. He has experience posing as a Death Eater, and he's meticulous. With a few views of the Pensieve, familiarizing himself with the target, he'll definitely avoid any slip-ups."
"Experience posing as a Death Eater?" Professor McGonagall glanced at Kyle, "I recall seeing Mr. Diggory at the castle before. Is there something you're not telling us..."
"Ah, he came to see me that time. I was referring to an earlier incident when we fought Dementors together."
"Oh," Professor McGonagall nodded, not pressing further.
"There's no need to trouble Mr. Diggory with this," she continued.
The Death Eater, now struggling in the net, broke free from the Imperius Curse and began to fight vigorously, but his wand had been tossed aside by Kyle, rendering his struggles somewhat futile.
It was just a bit noisy.
"I detest the effects of the Imperius Curse, but that doesn't mean I can't cast it," Professor McGonagall said, her expression conflicted. After a moment of internal struggle, she slowly extended her wand.
"Soul Departure!"
The Headmaster's Office fell silent.
"Oh!" Dumbledore's portrait exclaimed, turning to the person beside him, "Armando, did you see that? Professor McGonagall just used an Unforgivable Curse in the Headmaster's Office."
"I saw it, Albus."
Armando Dippet rubbed his eyes, "Merlin's beard, I must be dreaming!"
